After reading the reports on the new ESPN football I'm once again thinking about picking up an Xbox. If the glowing reports hold up, I don't think I can hold back any longer. I've got a chunk of Amazon gift certificates to use, so the cost of the console isn't a problem.

Only thing is I'm not interested in dropping $50 a piece for other games once I get the Xbox, and I don't think I would get an Xbox if it's just for ESPN Football. I was wondering, could anyone recommend some older Xbox games selling for under $20 that are still well worth playing? I've seen the list of platinum hits (http://www.xbox.com/en-us/platinumhits), but don't really have much of an idea of which ones are good.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I've already got a PS2.

I'm in a bit of a rush right now so I can't give you a list of what's good, but I wanted to mention another option for you. I too don't like dropping $50 on a game so one thing I often do for xbox games is buy them used at places like Gamestop and Eb Games. I can often find those previous hot and expensive games that are 6 months to a year old now for $20 or less. Also, the discs are good quality, you aren't going to get a game disc that is scratched to all hell. It works great for me because I am not big enough of an xbox gamer that I need the latest games right away.

jaygr: Thanks for the idea. Used games would be fine, too, and I'm surrounded by Gamestops and EB Games stores.

Well I'll admit I'm not much of a console gamer, and mostly only use my X-Box to play NCAA Football, and Tiger Woods...but I'll at least list the Platinum Hits there I played and enjoyed.

Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance is quite a bit of fun if you get a couple people together to play it. Beefed up Gauntlet style 'o game.

I enjoyed Silent Hill 2 also in a this story really makes no sense but it's kinda creepy sorta way.

I know a lot of people here liked NBA Stree Vol. 2 as well. I bought it and didn't much care for it, but what it does it appears to do pretty well.

That's about it for my knowledge of X-Box games.

I'll echo some earlier sentiments, getting used xbox is always a good route. Blockbuster often has decent deals on used games, and I have shopped EBay happily as well. As far as good games, if you haven't played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, it is a must-buy at any price (and I believe the price has dropped some).

I've seen Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for about 15-20 dollars used. That is a must buy game IMHO. Also, I've seen stores sell the original halo for 20 dollars. I haven't gotten time to play it therefore I haven't bought it, but I hear it is a great game if you like the genre at all.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is a must. I think it is 29.99 brand new. Best RPG I've ever played, but that is probably because it was set in the star wars universe and I love Star Wars.

I also say Odd World. Its extremely funny, but you have to be a fan of adventure games to fully enjoy it, however it is very old, was a lauch title and may show its age up against some of the more recent games.

Only get dark alliance if you have a friend that will come over and play through the game with you. I tried playing solo and it wasnt much fun, but my buddy and I blasted right through it in a week, was a blast.

You may want to try splinter cell, but it just wasn't my thing. Most people enjoy it but I couldn't get past the whole you are spotted so game over trial and error gameplay.

STAY AWAY FROM WWE RAW!!!!!

I hate stealth games too. Repeating the same scene 27 times because you keep getting discovered sucks. I know a lot of people love them, but I just can't get into them.

GB, do you already have a console, or is this your first purchase? Not to start a console debate, but PS2 has a huge back library of great games for $20 or less. The Grand Theft Auto Games, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo 3, SSX, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, the Final Fantasy series, ICO, etc. It covers all the genres, and has a great library of games.

Anyhow, just thought I'd mention that.

Xbox games that I've enjoyed that can be had for cheap include Top Spin, Jurassic Park Operation Genesis, and Baulder's Gate Dark Alliance. I honestly didn't enjoy Halo as much as everyone else, but I know I'm in the minority on that one.

Anybody want to sell me a copy of Starwars: KotOR?:)

Thanks for all the tips!

Some of the games mentioned I have already on the PS2 or the PC (KOTOR, NBA Street II, Splinter Cell, Halo), but I'll check out some of the others like Odd World, Silent Hill 2, and Panzer Dragoon Orta.

I wonder if I could get my wife to check out Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance. I don't think my 2-year-old son would be much help there, and friends that come over and hang out on a regular basis are a thing of the past now that we've got a family.

Any good racing games to be had cheap?

I got KOTOR when I ordered my pre-owned XBOX a couple weeks ago, and am having an absolute blast with it. Taking a break to play NCAA and now ESPN NFL, but am looking forward to getting back to it.

Silent Hill 2 is a really good game. Back when I played it, my roommate and his girlfriend got interested enough in it to hang out in the room and watch as I played it. When I moved out, I recorded the ending so they'd know who it turned out for James Sunderland.

The plot of it is interesting. Without giving anything away, the plot involves a man who gets a letter from his wife (who has been dead for a year) to meet him at their special place in the town of Silent Hill. Confused but hopeful, James goes to Silent Hill to investigate, and the fun begins. They did a good job of making you care about James and his unfortunate circumstances. Also, the game does a great job of creating a creepy atmosphere. Lots of thick fog with sounds from creatures who are apparently just out of sight. Great game to play alone at night with the lights out and the sound turned up.
