Do AI teams ever attempt to trade during the season? Especially if there's a signifigant injury, or it looks like the team is tanking and could get rid of a high priced player in the last year of a contract?

Sounds nice, but no.

Text sims as a whole have yet to evolve to the point where the AI teams are able to recognize weakness and take an active approach in plugging those areas.

IRL how often do teams make significant trades during the regular season? Think about it.

OOTP does this with some success and good results though not always.

Exactly. Until "familiarity with playbook" is a rating, in-season trading will remain unrealistically adventageous in a text-sim.
It's just no feasible in real life. Only a kicker, cover corner, or perhaps pure pass-rusher would be realisitc to trade for and have play immediately.

I think the way contracts are done in the NFL is also a factor. With contracts guaranteed in MLB and the NBA teams use midseason trades as a means to shape future payrolls by dumping high priced guys for cheap prospects. Meanwhile in the NFL you can afford to hang onto a guy to finish the season then dump him in the offseason with a whole lot less impact on the payroll.
