ESPN NFL 2K5 Trade Issue Analysis

There have been multiple reports of high-volume, poor trading by the AI in 2K5. I did some investigation into this issue, mostly because I'll be weeping uncontrollably if I find a gamekiller.

Why? because this game is MAGNIFICENT.

I'll tell you why next week, but please remember in the meantime that I absolutely pounded ESPN last year for abysmal 2-minute A.I. Madden has clearly had far superior gameplay (with proper sliders) for the last two years. This year, though, ESPN is just wonderful. So far.

The most serious issue has been this trading problem. It has two components: one, poor player valuation leading to lopsided trades, and two, high trade frequency, which spotlights the sometimes questionable A.I. even more.

I ran quite a few tests today, and I believe I've identified causes and corrective action. If you start a franchise with both pre-season games and weekly prep turned on, you will see 10-11 trades during the course of the season. If you turn one feature on and leave the other off, you'll see about 6-7 trades during the season. However, if you turn both off, the number of trades during the season will fall to only 2-3. The numbers are remarkably consistent each year.

There will still be offseason trades (5-6, usually), but with the greatly reduced in-season frequency, you'll only see one or two deals a year that look suspect. I can easily live with that.

From what I can determine, the suspect trades involve uniformly valuing players by their ranking regardless of position. As an example, you will occasionally see a position player (a defensive end, for example) traded for a quarterback. In the NFL, this never happens, because a quarterback has unique value due to his position. The game A.I., though, apparently only gives a small bonus to the quarterback, so an 86 rated quarterback traded for a 91 rated defensive end looks like a reasonable deal. In actuality, the quarterback position is so difficult to value versus other positions that quarterbacks are almost always traded for draft picks.
I've also occasionally seen a kicker traded for a position player. Again, same difficulty with valuation due to the uniqueness of the kicking position. Kickers are rarely traded, and when they are, it's always for a draft pick.

Now if you see five or six of these deals a year, it might drive you crazy. It certainly would me. But seeing one a year? No problem. Plus I have no problem giving up pre-season games and weekly prep. I didn't use them, anyway.

If you want to retain weekly prep, I believe that you could just leave it turned off until after the trading deadline in Week 8, then turn it back on (remember that you have to also select trading deadline 'on' in the options menu as well for the Week 8 deadline to apply). I don't know if it would have any undesirable side effects, though, so do that at your own risk.

Again, thanks to Bill Harrris!

As I've said in another thread, I don't have ESPN yet (was thinking of picking it up at that low price just for franchise mode once the season begins).

That workaround still wouldn't be good for me. For one, I like playing preseason games (assuming they benefit the players like in Madden). It's a good way of seeing if a lower ranked player might actually perform better than one who is rated higher (and more expensive). So for me to leave this on and still see 6-7 high profile trades throughout the year wouldn't work for me.

And if I were to turn it off, sure only seeing 1 or 2 of these trades would be better. But if the one, pointless trade that takes place is a monster (like the dumping of a young stud QB for the equivalent of nothing), that could still kill my franchise. Also in another thread, someone said that the Cardinals cut Anquan Boldin after he had a 1000 yards, 14 games in, for no reason at all. Are these types of moves factored in to the 1 or 2 trades that take place?

Even at the low price, if I can't enjoy the franchise mode, I'd rather spend the extra $$$ for Madden, where I can import my guys from NCAA too.

I think ESPN is worth the $20 alone to just play a game on XBOX live, and possibly setup a league.

If you're looking for deep franchise options, with lesser gameplay, Madden will do the trick.

Personally, love ESPN and will end up getting Madden too. If I could only have 1, I'd chose ESPN.

Logan, as far as I can tell the preseason has absolutely no bearing on player development. That sort of sucks. I hate that I have to turn off the weekly prep (which was kind of fun) just so there will not be "that many" stupid trades. BUT, if I can get the coach mode game play tweaked in, it will probably be ok (at least the game is payable on the field).

Don't speak so soon. I've been reading alot about Madden, and people are saying it's a much improved game. ESPN got alot of pimping due to people who have an agenda against EA, which I don't understand. I want Sega to succeed just like the next person, but they dropped the ball with a few glaring bugs which Madden won't have. I would pay $20 anyday just for the presentation alone of ESPN and I guess I'll have to look past the trade AI, no preseason, and no clipping calls. That sucks.

Where do companies get their testers? These bugs are found right away, it's not like they just popped up after several seasons.

I've been totally out to lunch this year on Madden's potential features. Are they going to have seamless online leagues as well? If their gameplay improves, I might have to switch over.

*EDIT*

As for the bugs, I think they know about them going out the door. I think what they hope for is that 95% of the buyers aren't "Hardcore" gamers like you find here and OS. Most people might not notice the clipping bug, and trade AI bug

I don't know about online play. To be honest, I haven't read up much on online features in Madden. The more I read about storymode, the more I think I'm going to like it... and well, I could always sim NCAA games to get the players into Madden, I feature I truly love.

The big thing about Madden, is the game never plays well out of the box and every year I'm hoping it does. One thing is fact though, I don't have to worry about different mins for simming game stats. :)

Like you, Madden was nothing but another release for me this year, but some things about ESPN are really getting to me.

dola,

I like weekly prep, keep it on and turn off preseason games and trades are only 2-5 per season. I think you can also turn prep off and it will still ask you if you want to use it week to week, so you could use it like that.

I'm waiting for a roster update to start a franchise and that should curtail the FA signings, as there are alot of good FA's out there.

Pre-Season=OFF
Weekly Prep=ON

That should really tone down the trades.

I have PS2, so the Xbox live thing doesn't matter in my case. Also, when I'm at school I'm primarily playing against other people, so online play isn't my biggest concern.

When I do play solo though, its franchise mode for me (and I have always been fine with Madden's gameplay--to each his own), and thats why ESPN looks dead in my eyes.

I do think its great for all of you who just like playing a game here or there, or playing online, that you can pay just $20 for the experience you're looking for.

Here is another possible workaround for the trade AI that several people on OS swear by. This one does not involve turning weekly prep off. This was posted by FootballForever on OS.

think I solved the Bad Trade AI logic...Do as I say and you will only get about 2 to 3 trades per season.

Turn preseason games OFF
Keep trade Deadline ON
Weekly Prep ON
Edit Rookies OFF (not sure if this one Matters)
Human/Computer Fatiuge- empty the bar and count 3 click from left
Injury- empty the bar and count 4 click from left.

I did this 4 differnt time and seen 3 trades in 3 seasons and only 2 in the last season I simmed, tyr it out and give me some feed back. I know it sucks not to have preseason games on but if you don't want trades to happen thats what you have to do. Out of all those trades I seen not of them were even close on trading of star players

Interesting analysis. I'd miss the pre-season games, but I have no problem turning weekly prep off. It's a decent feature that's so poorly implemented that it's not worthwhile, at least this year.
