I can see where Americans would be bewildered by this story. Folks involved in American pro sports usually save their killing, raping, etc. for off the field. ;)

There was also the junior ice hocky team a couple of years ago where one of the fathers beat the coach to death after practice or visa versa, can't remember the specific details.

Absoultely - American players, coaches and parents are not above committing heinous acts outside the game...but our referees...NEVER! ;)
