So I did one of these dynasty reports last year and really enjoyed it - time to start it up again.

I'm playing NCAA Football 2005, by EA Sports. I'm using v2 of the Blacklover rosters (http://www.geekrosters.com/); I have not personally made any changes to these rosters.

I'll be playing as the coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

I haven't gotten a lot of playtime for this game yet - so slider settings will probably be changing pretty regularly until I get settled on something. I'm posting here at least partially to keep my thoughts in order while I play; I know there were a handful of people who were enjoying this last season, so I hope you do this year too. :-D

Now, if you're going to be paying attention to a Georgia Tech dynasty, might as well enable you to do so correctly. If I remember... I'll be adding a little bit of info before each season - today, it's fight songs.
<P><U>The Ramblin' Wreck</U>
<I>I'm a ramblin' wreck from Georgia Tech, and a helluva engineer --
A helluva, helluva, helluva helluva, helluva engineer,
Like all the jolly good fellows,
I drink my whiskey clear.
I'm a ramblin' wreck from Georgia Tech, and a helluva engineer.

Oh! If I had a daughter, sir, I'd dress her in white and gold.
And put her on the campus, to cheer the Brave and Bold.
But if I had a son, sir,
I'll tell you what he'd do,
He would hell "TO HELL WITH GEORGIA" like his daddy used to do.

Oh! I wish I had a barrel of rum, and sugar three thousand pounds,
A college bell to put it in, a clapper to stir it round.
I'd drink to all the good fellows,
Who come from far and near.
I'm a ramblin', gamblin', Hell of an Engineer! Hey!
</I></P>
<P><U>Up With the White and Gold</U>
<I>Oh, well, it's up with the White and Gold,
Down with the Red and Black,
Georgia Tech is out for a victory.
We'll drop our battle-axe on Georgia's head,
When we meet her
Our team is sure to beat her.
Down on the farm there will be no sound
'Till our bow-wows rip through the air;
When the battle is over, Georgia's team will be found
With the Yellow Jackets swarming 'round!
</I></P>

A tough schedule across the board. Rated an A+ for schedule strength - and not really much to play with here. Our only two 'selections' we have are I-AA Samford, and an improving Connecticut team; we do draw Miami at home, however. Still, it could be an ugly year quickly if we don't come out of the gate strong.

Time for a preseason roster review...

2004 Roster: Quarterbacks - Grade C+

#1, Reggie Ball - So
5'11", 195 lbs
181-350 passing for 1996 yards, 10 TD, 11 Int
139-384 rushing for 3 TDs
1 tackle
OV SP ST AW AG AC CA BT TP TA
85 78 52 78 78 80 56 56 86 85
Reggie Ball burst onto the scene last year as a true freshman, starting right out of the gate and impressing. A competitor, Reggie had his share of freshman troubles, but provided a number of highlight-reel plays; including a 25-yard naked bootleg touchdown run to win the Vanderbilt game, and the flattening of Georgia cornerback Bruce Thornton in front of a raucous Tech sideline. He comes into this season as the starting quarterback after withstanding a push from redshirted freshman Patrick Carter. Ball's strengths are his agility and ability to move around in and out of the pocket; he throws a decent deep ball but will still rely heavily on P.J. Daniels and the running game to move the chains.

#4, Patrick Carter - Fr-RS
6'3", 190 lbs
OV SP ST AW AG AC CA BT TP TA
70 82 48 56 80 84 56 48 84 76
A smoother runner and more prototypical quarterback than Reggie Ball, Pat Carter had some injury issues at the beginning of last season and elected to take a redshirt season. He impressed during the spring game, and had a shot to take the starting position, but is still a year behind Reggie in development. He should see a good deal of duty as second string, and a breakout year at any point may get him the starting job.

#13, Taylor Bennett - Fr
6'3", 200 lbs
OV SP ST AW AG AC CA BT TP TA
56 56 48 40 56 52 48 40 82 78
Taylor arrives on campus strictly as the third-team quarterback. A pocket-passer, Bennett will redshirt his first season on the flats.

#45, P.J. Daniels - Jr-RS

88 88 76 84 86 89 65 88 90 89</FONT>
Prince Ahadzie Daniels, Jr. was a huge surprise last season - a former walkon, he broke out with a 100-yard performance against Florida State in Tallahassee; and ended up with the second-best single-season rushing total in Georgia Tech history. He finished the season with an incredible 307 yards rushing and four touchdowns against Tulsa in the Humanitarian Bowl - that is the second highest total in Georgia Tech history (to Eddie Lee Ivery's 356 yards against Air Force in 1978... at the time an NCAA record). One of the leaders of the offense, and the workhorse in the Tech backfield.

#3, Rashaun Grant - Fr-RS
5'10", 185 lbs
<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA BT SA
82 92 56 65 92 94 68 80 78 88</FONT>
The Rivals #2 all-purpose running back in the 2003 recruiting class, Grant took a redshirt year last season and used it to good effect. Rashaun will be the second back on the team and provides a nice burst of speed to counteract P.J.'s mostly inside running. We will give Rashaun plenty of opportunity to see the field; both spelling P.J. in at least one formation, and joining him in the backfieldwhen we run the Wishbone and the two-back Shotgun.

#24, Chris Woods - Jr
5'10", 190 lbs
<I>31-122 rushing for 1 TD</I>
<I>6-38 receiving</I>
<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA BT SA
74 86 62 68 84 85 65 76 74 86</FONT>
Chris Woods transferred into the Georgia Tech program when Morris Brown (a I-AA school) dropped its football program in the summer of 2003. Woods was the main backup rusher in 2003, seeing his most action in the Georgia game (due to P.J.'s injury), and the Humanitarian Bowl (after P.J. was done for the day). A decent back, he'll be in the rotation but not see a ton of time barring injury.

#38, Michael Sampson - So-RS
6'1", 199 lbs
<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA BT SA
68 88 65 52 82 85 59 68 70 80</FONT>
Michael Sampson lost a huge opportunity last season. He was one of ten Georgia Tech football players to fail out of school - and was the starting back coming into the season when that hit. He did make it back into Tech after a couple of semesters... and promptly hurt himself entering spring practice. He should be healthy coming into the season, but is stuck behind three other backs right now. Good speed, and some potential - but may not see much time on the field.

2004 Roster: Fullbacks - Grade B-

OV SP ST AW AC CT CA BT PB RB SA
80 76 62 76 78 62 65 62 52 62 85
A former running back, Dixon has developed into a solid blocking fullback. The returning starter, he'll play mostly in the I-Formation and Goalline sets. While he can carry and catch, he doesn't often.

#32, Johnathan Jackson - Sr-RS
6'2", 225 lbs

OV SP ST AW AC CT CA BT PB RB SA
76 70 56 74 68 65 62 62 52 62 84
Another blocking back, Jackson will see the field mostly on special teams.

#28, Ajenavi Eziemefe - Jr

18-53 rushing
4-29 receiving
OV SP ST AW AC CT CA BT PB RB SA
72 84 56 52 80 62 62 68 52 56 85
Eziemefe is the fastest of our fullbacks - and a good ballcarrier. He was the starter at RB for parts of 2002 before P.J. took over the spot. He will see time as the FB in the wishbone, and many of his carries will likely be off the option. He should carry the ball more often than our other fullbacks despite being in for less plays overall.

William's biggest claim to fame so far is an outstanding catch in Tech's upset win against Auburn last season - other than that, he has served as John Paul Foschi's backup for the past few seasons, and will step into his own as starter this season. Not a great blocker, not a great receiver, but will serve.

#80, George Cooper - So-RS

<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA BT PB RB SA

<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA JM BT SA
87 90 48 88 90 92 90 56 85 48 90</FONT>
Nate is the leader of our receiving corps; one of those players who seems to have been around forever. A small, speedy type with good hands, Curry is the only player with a guarenteed spot in the WR depth chart.

#7, Levon Thomas - Jr
6'0", 195 lbs
<I>10-101 receiving for 1 TD</I>
<I>1-(-7) rushing</I>

<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA JM BT SA
76 87 52 76 84 88 78 52 87 52 85</FONT>
Thomas has never really lived up to his potential at Tech; and can swing anywhere from second to fourth in the depth chart very easily. He'll play in the rotation and a handful of spots, and we'll see how his production comes along in the first few games before settling him into a spot.

#82, Calvin Johnson - Fr
6'4", 210 lbs
<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA JM BT SA
74 90 52 59 86 90 78 56 90 52 82</FONT>
Perhaps the most looked-forward-to arrival on campus this fall is blue chip receiver Calvin Johnson. Johnson is a physical specimen, and one of GT's most highly publicized signees in the past few years. A top-10 WR nationally, CJ could redshirt, but won't. He will be given every opportunity to win the #2 receiver spot opposite Curry, and will be expected to be a number-one next season.

#8, Damarius Bilbo - Jr-RS
6'3", 225 lbs
<I>2-55 receiving</I>
<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA JM BT SA
70 85 56 68 85 87 70 56 85 56 95</FONT>
Anyone who has paid attention to Georgia Tech in recent years (or my dynasty last season) will remember Bilbo as a starting quarterback - well, when Reggie Ball won the job last season, there had to be some way to get Bilbo onto the field. Wide Receiver was the solution. Bilbo's size is impressive; he makes a nice red-zone target, and could really dominate a smaller secondary when paired up with Calvin Johnson. Bilbo will see Levon Thomas as his main opponent for playing time; his main weakness is hands at this point. He is also the emergency quarterback.

#81, Xavier McGuire - So-RS
6'3", 210 lbs
<I>4-25 receiving</I>
<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA JM BT SA
68 84 56 56 80 85 72 59 89 52 86</FONT>
Potential, potential, potential. X adds even more size to our receiving corps; I'd love to get him playing time in blowout situations - there might just not be many of those. If McGuire could develop into a decent WR, then a 4-WR set with CJ, Bilbo, Levon, and X will be a scary sight for smaller cornerbacks.

#12, Mark Logan - Sr
5'11", 200 lbs
<I>4-55 receiving</I>
<I>2-50 returning kicks</I>
<I>2 tackles</I>
<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA JM BT SA
68 84 52 68 82 84 70 56 84 52 84</FONT>
A converted quarterback, Logan will see his time on special teams.

#88, Chris Dunlap - So
5'11", 200 lbs
<I>1-(-2) receiving</I>

<FONT face="courier">OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA JM BT SA

Dunlap is at the bottom of the depth chart, and shouldn't see much playing time.

#77, Kyle Wallace - Sr

<FONT face="courier">OV ST AW PB RB SA
85 90 87 87 91 70</FONT>
Wallace is Tech's top returner on the offensive line, and a three-year starter at Right Tackle. A solid lineman, he's the strongest link to what may be a weak (and thin) offensive line.

#71, Kenton Johnson - Sr-RS
6'6", 325 lbs
<FONT face="courier">OV ST AW PB RB SA
72 85 72 84 82 76</FONT>
Kenton has the size to be a dominant tackle, but not the technique - he was a transfer from Morris Brown along with Chris Woods after the demise of that program. The third tackle last season, Kenton steps in as the starter at left tackle this year.

#76, Salih Besirevic - Jr-RS

<FONT face="courier">OV ST AW PB RB SA
70 85 68 82 82 76</FONT>
Brad is the definition of a big nasty lineman. Great size and strength, but is not fast and has a tendency to miss pickups on blocks. We'd prefer him blocking straight-ahead rather than pulling out. He will start this season (and likely next) at Right Guard.

Eric Henderson was named All-ACC at the end of last season - but doesn't get nearly the hype that some of the other ACC defensive ends seems to pick up. Ignored by preseason pub this year, EH should provide a good bit of pressure in the backfield.

Overall, our roster is thin but decent - we have good young skill position players on offense, at least, and that's where we are going to build. We're set at QB for three seasons, RB for four, and WR for 2-3... the defensive line should be fine as well. We really need offensive line recruits, and special teamers in the worst way.

A good mixture, I think - both of the 2 RB sets (2-Back Slot and Wishbone) will feature P.J. Daniels and Rashaun Grant. Grant will also start in the Ace Bunch formation, to give an opportunity for P.J. to rest.

Our other major substitution will be Eziemefe in the Wishbone.

Well, we're not popular in the preseason. The ACC is pretty highly thought of this year - 6 top-25 teams and 10/12 in the top 50. As always, we'll be facing a handful of All-Americans throughout the course of the season, but get no respect at all - our only appearance on any preseason team is FS James Butler as First Team All-ACC.

For anyone who hasn't been following NCAA 2005, one new feature this year is the home field - no major surprises in the top few "Toughest Places to Play", although I would have thought Notre Dame & Touchdown Jesus might be higher.

Well, that too, but anything in double digits is just wrong for the ACC. ;)

Nothing like starting the season off with a huge upset. Leinart had a huge game, but the USC defense couldn't hold - surprising, and possibly an indicator for either the strength of the ACC... or the strength of home field advantage.

Not the way we wanted to start the season - in the week leading up to our opening game, DE Eric Henderson gets in some trouble. The leader of our defensive line gets knocked for violating team rules - late to the last team meeting. We're not going to need him this game, but decide to suspend him for the first half.

Starting in place of Eric Henderson will be fifth-year senior Chirod Williams.

As expected, our running game has little trouble against the I-AA Bulldogs, although all we have to show for it in the first quarter is a 3-0 lead. We extend to 10-0 with P.J.'s first touchdown run of the season early in the second quarter. The highlight of the first half is a 47-yard Reggie Ball to Damarius Bilbo touchdown pass - Ball bootlegging to the left and finding Bilbo in single coverage with a six-inch height advantage on the corner.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 17, Samford 0

We sit some players at the start of the second half - P.J. takes a seat for the day, finishing just short of 100 yards. Nate Curry and Reuben Houston are also finished to let some of the younger players build up some gameday experience. Reggie Ball remains in charge at the start of the third quarter, however - long enough to engineer another touchdown drive before passing the reins to Pat Carter.

Eric Henderson, after sitting out the first half, comes in the third and promptly sprains his elbow. He'll be out for four weeks - long enough to miss a few huge games.

Final: Georgia Tech 38, Samford 7

I really like the player violations part of this game, makes you think what to do with some top players and big games.

I agree - although I wish there was a slider for it. Seems that in general there are an awful lot of these - going through the NCAA, looks like about 3/4 of all teams have at least one guy suspended for each game they play, and that seems a bit much.

Preview:
Clemson (1-0)
Overall: B
Offense: B
Defense: B
Special Teams: B

Key Players:
WR A. Currie (2 Rec TD)
QB C. WhiteHurst (349 Pass Yds)
CB J. Miller (KR TD)

Although it's tempting to take the redshirt off of freshman Darrell Robertson to take over the Right End position with Henderson's injury; we'll stick with Chirod Williams for the next three weeks. He should be back in time for the Miami game.

Bad news about FB Jimmy Dixon: "Our team meeting was interrupted rudely when Dixon decided he no longer wanted to be a part of it. This action is unacceptable and has to stop." I agree - and although it hurts against a strong Clemson team, Dixon is suspended for the game.

Clemson looks to be a solid team on the surface - a great passing game, and a very solid pass defense - but has surprising weaknesses for a top 15 team. The passing game is led by Jr-RS Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst - Whitehurst is a pocket passer, with decent mobility. His primary target is speedster Airse Currie, but Chris Baham and Chansi Stuckey are good two and three receivers. I expect a number of 3-wide sets to be thrown against me, especially with the secondary trouble we have. The Clemson running game is nothing to write home about - Duane Coleman is a decent back, but not a real standout. Aside from Senior Cedric Johnson at LG, the offensive line is nothing spectacular.

The defensive line, simply put, is horrible. They are backed up by an allstar middle backer in Leroy Hill - speed and tackling, he is the complete package (OVR 94). Justin Miller is a true shutdown corner and will be giving Nate Curry fits all day. Their second corner isn't bad, but there is a large dropoff before the Nickel back, and we'll look to take advantage of that.

Our main objective here is to run the ball - a lot. Clemson beat Wake last week by a field goal; but Wake's starting tailback (Chris Barclay) put up almost 200 yards and two scores, and as a team WF went well over 300. I think we have better talent running the ball, but we'll see.
We lose the toss, and go on defense - the first play sees Stuckey beat Gerris Wilkinson for a 25-yard gain. Whitehurst hits his first three passes, but on third and four the Tigers run a play-action - Wilkinson comes in on the weakside blitz and hammers CW as he throws. The ball is up in the air, and Mansfield Wrotto comes down with it - a huge interception, and something to charge up the team. We move right into our gameplan - lots of P.J. Daniels, and chewing up the clock. Reggie Ball breaks a nice option keeper off to get inside the ten, and Daniels carries it in on third and goal from the three. Our offensive line is holding blocks well against Clemson's defensive line; we go 39 yards on seven plays, all on the ground and take a 7-0 lead.

Kenny Scott makes a stop in the backfield on third down to force a punt on the next Clemson possession, and we follow the same plan - taking our time into the second quarter, and P.J. takes it in again. The next drive turns out to be Chris Reis making an outstanding interception inside the thirty - and this is where the running game pays off, as Reggie Ball gets single coverage on Calvin Johnson after a playfake. We're on top 21-0 now, and the Death Valley crowd is silent.

Whitehurst is doing well to get the ball to his receivers, but a number of screens and short hitches aren't necessarily paying off as our corners are tackling well. A fourth-and-two conversion at midfield keeps the Tigers' best drive so far moving, and we see our defensive line starting to sub in and out. A big run up the middle puts Clemson into the red zone for the first time today, but a droped pass forces Bowden to settle for three. But with under a minute to play, another playfake shakes Calvin Johnson free again - a good five yards behind the defense and Reggie's second read turns into a 52-yard touchdown catch. We go into the half with a lead I didn't expect - I thought the run game would be effective, but didn't think this much.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 28, Clemson 3

We exchange scores to start the third quarter, and are finally forced to punt. I'm not entirely sure what's going on here - our offensive line is just clicking against this Clemson front, much better than we did against Samford. Much of the reason has to do with the poor Clemson front line - not only are they not the most talented bunch, but shaken confidence-wise as well. We haven't broken off any 40-yarders like I saw in NCAA 2004 - it's a consistant 5-6 yards every carry almost regardless of who carries the ball, and it's all the offensive line pushing back the defense. The confidence meter has been completely empty on the Clemson D-Line since the mid-second quarter. Another reason is turnovers - we picked Whitehurst off twice in the first half, and once in the fourth quarter. If it wasn't for Wake's dominant performance on the ground as well, I'd be looking to immediately change sliders; but as it stands I'll be happy with the win and see what happens to the Tigers next week before seeing if it's the settings or just a horrible defense.

Key Players:
QB D. Durant (627 Pass Yards)
HB R. McGill (3 Total TD)
DE T. Davis (17 Tackles)

An early note - in the 3:30 game, Clemson loses to Texas A&amp;M 34-21, giving up 430 yards of total offense in the process. I'm going to stick with the sliders for this game, and see how it plays out.

UNC is playing well so far with wins over I-AA William and Mary and a ranked Virginia. They're averaging over 300 yards in the air, so this will be a good test for our secondary. Darian Durant is the sparkplug for this offense - he has thrown for seven touchdowns in two games, but hasn't done much with his legs, a surprise so far. Ronnie McGill, a sophmore, is the top back, but we'll see a variety of players out of the solid stable of half- and full-backs. The receivers are led by senior Jawarski Pollock - a 5'8" speedster, and the smallest of their wideouts. The offensive line is anchored by second-team All-ACC Center Jason Brown.

Defensively, the line is so-so, but better than Clemson's. Redshirt junior defensive End Tommy Davis has made a lot of tackles, but is generally an average performer.. Linebackers are decent, but no stars to speak of - Sophmore cornerback Kareen Taylor and Senior Free Safety Gerald Sensabaugh are the top players on the defensive side of the ball.

We get through this week with no disciplinary notes to speak of, and arrive at North Carolina at the same time as the JP Sports trucks - this is a regionally broadcast game, although in primetime on Saturday it'll be tough to find in a sports bar.

We go three and out after receiving the opening kickoff, and a great punt return gives the Tarheels solid field position. Durant throws an 24-yard fade a few plays later, and we trail for the first time this season; 7-0. We exchange punts for a couple of possessions, until we tie the game on one of the prettiest catches you'll see, Nate Curry diving in the middle of the field and making the play.

I'm still worried about the sliders, and adjust at this point.

CPU Break Block from 10 to 13.
Human Run Block from 9 to 7.

North Carolina answers with a solid drive and a mid-range field goal to take back the lead at the end of the first quarter; then another midway through the second. We put an extended drive together, including two third-and-long conversions ending in a P.J. Daniels 2-yard push up the middle just before the half to take a slim lead.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 14, North Carolina 13

We pick Durant to start the half, but are unable to get anything going offensively - the running game is still successful, but Reggie is having a lot of trouble completing passes. The game stays 14-13 into the fourth quarter, but UNC is getting closer and closer each possession. Finally the Tarheels break one, with Durant throwing a 28-yard strike for a score. The 2-point conversion fails, but we still trail 19-14 with 6:20 to play.

We have two drives down into NC territory - the first sees Reggie get sacked on fourth and six; the second sees P.J. stopped in the backfield on fourth and three, as we drop our first of the season.

Final: North Carolina 19, Georgia Tech 14

A pretty straightforward reason why we lost this one - our defense played well, our running game was good; but Ball was horrible throwing the ball. There were a handful of drops, but a lot of inaccuracy. We've enough faith in him to not look towards Pat Carter - and at least we get a week off before facing Miami.

#13 Miami (2-1)

Key Players:
OLB R. McIntosh (25 Tackles)
HB Frank Gore (4 Total TD)
QB Brock Berlin (479 Pass Yards - Suspended)

Just what we wanted to see, a fired-up and annoyed Miami team after getting beat by Houston of all teams. At least we get through this week with no discipline problems.

Miami, as expected, is extremely talented. One possible reason they may have lost to Houston? Quarterback Brock Berlin, suspended. He'll miss our game as well - but Derrick Crudup is nearly as good a passer, and a good bit faster. The halfback is Frank Gore, having a solid season with 220 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Ryan Moore has twice as many catches as any of the other receivers, although I'm most scared of the serious speed shown by Roscoe Parrish and Devin Hester. Miami's top five receivers could all start for many teams. They are slightly weaker on the right side of the offensive line, but that's not saying much.

Defensively, we face our first very good defensive line of the season. We have to watch Orlen Harris very closerly - the Junior is an awesome player and if he's matched up against one of our weaker linemen, we could have a lot of trouble up front. The secondary is very good as well - and here's our first moment to touch in on the huve watch. Glenn Sharpe is still the nickel back, but has five tackles and a pick on the season so far.

Any way to slice it, we're in for a battle - and coming off that loss, Miami will be dangerous. This game will be broadcast regionally... if nothing else, we'll be at home. Oh, and we get Eric Henderson back - we'll need him.

Neither Corso nor Herbstreit think we can touch the Miami passing attack, although both think we'll play well.

We win the toss and choose to defend - hoping to stop them early for some momentum. We do get a nice defensive play on the second of the game - a pitch to Gore turns into a swing pass back to the quarterback, and Henderson returns to the team by flattening Crudup for a 4-yard loss. That sets up third and long, and Crudup's pass over the middle is picked off by James Butler! Exactly what we were looking for... but Butler gets up slowly, he's hurt, and that could be trouble.

We get word on Butler a few downs later - a bruised shoulder. He's done for the game, but will be alright.

Our running game is working out again today, better than Carolina. Sets up another play action - from just inside the red zone, Reggie hooks up with Calvin Johnson on a fade - CJ is quickly flattened, but hangs onto the ball; and we take a 7-0 lead.

Crudup has figured his favorite target - he is 0-5 to start the game, but looks Roscoe Parrish's way four straight times, hooking up twice for nearly 50 yards. The fourth was end-zone bound, but I was learning, and had him double covered. I call double-coverage again on third and six, but he beats both safety and corner, Crudup finds Parrish for the tying strike in the middle of the field.

We're forced to punt our next possession, and Frank Gore takes a pitch in for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. We strike back - after converting a third-and-thirteen and a fourth-and-inches, another third and long turns into Calvin getting free down the right sideline, and Reggie hits him for a touchdown strike. All told, that's 10 plays, 81 yards to tie the game.

With 1:39 left in the half, we have the first serious defensive breakdown - Crudup hits Ryan Moore in the seam, and he takes it to the house for an 80-yard scoring strike. Our defense needs to step up someplace, we don't have the firepower for a shootout.

A kick out of bounds puts us in good field position, and with little time to play we move downfield quickly. Miami is playing a deep zone, and we hit a few plays in the mid-range - and with ten seconds to go, over the middle and down to the five. A quick shot in the end zone falls incomplete; and we settle for a field goal try from 23 yards. A chip shot - that David Jordan misses, and we're down a score heading into the half.

Halftime: Miami 21, Georgia Tech 14

That miss at the end of the half seems to take the wind out of our sails - we start the half three-and-out, and Crudup hits Moore behind our defense almost right away for another score. The third quarter is all Miami, and we're down a good bit into the fourth.

That's when things get interesting - Miami at this point has put their second string in the ballgame, and our first string is better than their second. At this 6:27 mark in the fourth quarter, the Hurricanes take a 45-14 lead. We put together a decent drive that eats up too much clock, and Reggie hits Curry for a 9-yard touchdown. We get a three-and-out, and Ball goes up top to Calvin Johnson for 54 yards. The onside kick fails - but we get the ball back with under a minute to play. This time it's Nate Curry who gets behind the defense, and Reggie hits him for <i>85</i> yards. That with 41 seconds left, however - and a furious comeback does nothing but pad stats.

Final Score: Miami 45, Georgia Tech 35

A lot of ifs in this game - but none really mean anything, since our scoring was all against the second and third team defenses; which wouldn't have been in the game if it was close. The only regret here is how much quality we lost in pass defense without Butler in the game.

Early in the week, we run into some serious discipline problems. One at a time:

WR Nate Curry: "The school board is recommending we suspend Curry for breaking unspecified team rules. Looks like this guy is going to be out of commission for awhile." - Uh, no. If you're not going to tell me what it is he did wrong, I'm not going to suspend him, simple as that. Curry will play.

T Kyle Wallace: "Recent inappropriate campus activities have been linked to a few students, including Wallace. This is one area where we have to act and act quickly." - Not entirely sure what he's doing wrong, but I'll suspend him for the first half of the Maryland game.

OLB Gerris Wilkinson: "One of Wilkinson's professors has come to us with concerns about Wilkinson's penchant for plagiarism. This is a no-no for the university and actions will be taken immediately." - Gerris is suspended for Maryland.

SS Dawan Landry: "Landry has shown a total lack of interest in his schoolwork. His grades have faltered and his attendance is spotty at best. We need to do something soon." - Miss classes, miss half a game. Landry will be suspended for the first half of the Maryland game as well.

QB Reggie Ball: "It was recently found that Ball provided false information on his entrance paperwork. This is a major offense to the university and is grounds for expulsion." - Wow. Meet your new starting quarterback, Patrick Carter. Reggie is suspended for four games, and will not return until November 13th against Connecticut.

None of these punishments, by the by, are what was recommended. The recommendations were between one and three games; but I took the importance I saw in each.

Now to face Maryland - with a new starting quarterback, and some significant talent hits, especially in the first half. We'll have two new linebackers on the field, as Chris Reis will take Landry's spot at SS, while Wilkinson is suspended. Between that and the new quarterback, the game plan is simple - ball control. UMd's starting quarterback is a redshirt sophmore - Joel Statham is decent, and is throwing for over 220 yards/game this year. Josh Allen, meanwhile, has also been hit by disciplinary problems; as the star RB will be out for this game. Taking is place is Junior Sam Maldonado, a good runner in his own right. Senior Steve Suter seems like he's been around forever; he is Statham's favorite target, although he only has one touchdown on the season. The offensive line of Maryland is outstanding, led by All-American guard C.J. Brooks on the left side. The right side is weaker, although still solid.

A good defensive line is slightly soft in the center, but has turned in middle-of-the-road performances against the run. Better against the pass mainly due to second-team All-ACC corner Domonique Foxworth. Foxworth will draw Nate Cutty is pass coverage most often.

The game - first in a while that is not on a Thursday night on ESPN - is still televised. We're actually picked to win, I hope that's not a bad omen.

The Terrapins come out in a 3-4 set, trying to hide some lack of depth in the middle. We're able to grind out a first down before punting, but Suter burns Kenny Scott on third and long for a 76-yard touchdown, and we trail early. P.J. Daniels breaks on a play later - 81 yards down the sideline and eventually caught inside the 10. Carter is sacked on second down to set up a field goal try that sails wide left - it's not until our third drive of the game with less than a minute to go in the first quarter that we get on the board, P.J. up the middle on third and goal from the one. A hard-fought score instantly for naught - Kenny Scott is burnt badly for the second time today, this time by the third Maryland WR. Weatherly goes for about eighty yards, and we trail 14-7.

We are forced to punt after a clipping call and a sack the next series, but Suter is hit hard on the punt return and fumbles - Jimmy Dixon falls on the loose ball, and we catch a break. A plodding drive turns into a score when Patrick Carter throws the first touchdown pass of his career, hitting Darius Williams on a play-action bootleg from the three yard line.

We follow that up with a horrible defensive showing - Kenny Scott in the midst of a horrible game is called for pass interference, negating a Tabugbo Anyansi interception. Three plays later, Chris Reis is stepped on in the pile - he'll be gone for a few weeks due to bruised ribs. We do eventually get the ball back, and David Jordan redeems himself with a field goal to end the first half.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 17, Maryland 14

The Terps get the ball to start the second half, but more importantly we get Dawan Landry back into the game. With Reis hurt, Landry becomes exceedingly important. We exchange scores in the third quarter, and early in the fourth Nick Novak hits a field goal to tie the game at 24.

That's all the scoring chances for either team for a good bit - we're still tied, receiving a punt with 23 seconds to play. Rashaun Grant has had good luck returning kicks thus far, and gets down into Maryland territory; at the 48 with 14 seconds to play. Not a lot of time to work with, and a pair of dropped balls seals the game - we're going into overtime.

We lose the toss and go on offense. P.J. has had a strong game - nearly 200 yards although 81 of that was on an early carry - but he gets stopped short of a first down. Our goat today is a pretty obvious one - David Jordan misses his third field goal, and that hands the game to the Terps on a silver platter.

A hard loss to take, especially with the suspensions. With Wilkinson in particular playing, we may have had a better shot at this game. On the good side, Pat Carter didn't play badly - taking away three deep incompletions with under 20 seconds to play, he hit better than 50% of his passes; including five straight at one point. Either way, we're licking out wounds now in the midst of a 3-game losing streak.

Key Players:
OLB M. Ruff (42 Tackles)
WR S. Landrum (479 Receiving Yards)
DE J. Scharrer (27 Tackles)

More discipline problems, this on top of Reggie Ball still suspended.

SS Dawan Landry: "The Atlanta newspaper reported that Landry has been getting preferential treatment in his classes. Let's take action on this quickly." - Landry just last week was having trouble just going to class. He'll get suspended for a full game this time through. No Duke for you.

Speaking of the Blue Devils, they're pretty bad. The quarterback situation has been a balanced one - playing both senior Chris Dapolito and sophmore Mike Schneider. Schneider has more upside, but they are both similar players at this point - pocket passers both. The running game centers around redshirt junior Cedric Dargan. Dargan has some speed but is not a blazer; the fastest player on offense is the top receiver Senterrio Landrum. Landrum has nearly 500 yards and two touchdowns through the air. There's not much to speak of either on the offensive line, or defense in general. The best player on the Duke squad is Tight End Ben Patrick - the Sophmore is rated the highest in terms of talent, but hasn't put up anything on the stat sheet this season.

Still, Duke has put forth a pair of wins this year, beating I-AA The Citadel and Navy.

...all the same, what better cure for offensive ills than Duke? We do basically anything we want in the first half, and move to the backups on offense for the second.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 28, Duke 7

Nothing much to say about this one. Damarius Bilbo gets some work at quarterback after Pat Carter gets his foot stepped on - nothing serious.

<BODY>
At the halfway mark of the season, a quick rundown:

<U>Midseason Grades</U>
Quarterbacks - Midseason Grade: B
Two knocks on Reggie Ball - the big one is the suspension. The on-the-field one is the completion percentage; mostly due to the horrible game against North Carolina. Ball is completing 41% of his passes, to Pat Carter's 52%; but Ball has still thrown for 10 touchdowns against only one interception. Carter is 2-0 TD/Int, and has two more games to make a claim on the starting position before Ball returns.

Running Backs - Midseason Grade: A
P.J. Daniels is living up to expectations, with an average of 7.0 yards/carry; over 800 yards and nine touchdowns after six games. Rashaun Grant is doing just as well, with a better YPC average - 450 yards on 58 carries. He only has two touchdowns, while third stringer Chris Woods has five in on the ground. No complaints at this point.

Receivers - Midseason Grade: B-
Calvin Johnson is as advertised and better - an average of over 30 yards/catch and six touchdowns. Levon Thomas has been solid, catching 10 passes on the season; while Nate Curry has been a slight disappointment with only 11 catches. CJ leads the team in all categories - 18 catches for 560 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Offensive Line - Midseason Grade: B+
Hugely responsible for the success of the running game, the Offensive Line has been decent while passing; we are middle-of-the-road in the ACC in sacks allowed at 19.

Defensive Line - Midseason Grade: C-
Tied for last in the ACC and 115th in the country in sacks with Duke (12), our D-Line hasn't been generating much push. We've done well against the rush, near tops in the NCAA against the run (which is a standard problem with the NCAA series).

Linebackers - Midseason Grade: C
Nothing spectactular out of the linebacking corps - while well responsible for the running game, also at fault in our 102nd rated pass defense - well over 250 yards/game.

Secondary - Midseason Grade: D
See linebackers. 250 ypg is horrible.

<U>Slider Adjustments</U>
In an attempt to bump up the CPU running game, and still tone down ours a bit; I drop Human Run Blocking to '5', up the CPU Break Block to '15', and up the CPU Running Back Ability to '15'.

<B>#18 Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech</B>

Preview:
#18 Virginia Tech (6-1)
Overall: B+
Offense: B+
Defense: A-
Special Teams: B+

Key Players:
QB B. Randall (1089 Pass Yards)
HB M. Imoh (838 Rush Yards)
HB C. Humes (5-9 Rush Yards)

Thursday night games in Atlanta are wonderful things. Not only for the setting, the national attention, the atmosphere - but the short week and the ability to avoid discipline problems.

We face a strong Virginia Tech squad this week, who is riding high but yet to face the intense part of their schedule. The Hokies are led by Senior quarterback Bryan Randall - Randall has thrown for over 1000 yards, in addition to thirteen touchdowns against only a single interception. He has rushed for five scores and over 400 yards on his own. While he is the strongest weapon on offense, the two tailbacks are great as well - Cedric Humes and Mike Imoh have combined for over 1300 yards themselves on the ground thus far. VT is the only team in the ACC to rush for more yards/game than we do, so this will be a challenge.

Through the air, Justin Hamilton is a large target at 6'3", 219; he is the best receiver of the bunch and Randall's favorite target. The offensive line is strong at the tackles, but weaker towards the middle.

Defensively, Virginia Tech's tradition of strong defenses holds true - there is no weakness with the possible exception of the Nickel back. All the corners are tall, which negates one large receiving plus we have over many opponents.

On our side of the ball, we look towards ball control, as per usual. This should be the last week we miss Chris Reis on defense; Patrick Carter has two more guarenteed games as the Yellow Jacket starter before Reggie Ball returns.

The Hokies elect to receive in a light rain - wonderful weather for some smash-mouth football.

We get just the start we need - three-and-out, and Rashaun Grant returns the punt down near the 30 yard line. Not much movement on offense, though - and Jordan misses a 45-yard field goal that would have given us an early lead. We get a second chance on our next possession, set up by a nifty Carter scramble. P.J. punches the ball in, and we lead 7-0.

Randall leads his team right back to tie the game at the start of the second quarter, then adds another about the midway for a 14-7 lead. Our killer moment is with under thirty seconds to play in the half; on third and ten Reuben Houston is flagged for a questionable pass interference call to keep the VT drive going. That turns into a touchdown just before the half, and despite a last-second field goal, we trail at the midpoint.

Halftime: Virginia Tech 21, Georgia Tech 10

We've moved the ball well - our biggest problem has been stopping the Virginia Tech running game. Mostly they've mixed us up - running out of three- and four- wide sets when we weren't expecting. We shift to a stronger emphasis on the 4-2-5 defense (two strong safeties) in the second half to see if that will counter.

The third quarter is a see-saw, moving back and forth. We get a good chance to start the fourth, but elect to go for it on fourth-and-one just inside the thirty, and can't pull it off. VT tromps right down the field to go up three scores, and we're in full-fledged panic mode now. The threat of our running game is strong enough to get some one-on-one coverages off play-action, and Carter engineers a solid drive for a quick score to pull back within 11. What's the answer?

Cedric Humes for his third touchdown of the day, and that's pretty much going to wrap things up. A failed desperation fourth down attempt in VT territory sets up a garbage-time touchdown for Virginia Tech, and we drop our fourth in five games this season.

<B>Georgia Tech at #19 North Carolina State</B>

Preview:
#19 North Carolina State (6-2)
Overall: B+
Offense: A-
Defense: A-
Special Teams: B

Key Players:
HB T. McClendon (17 Total TD)
OLB P. Thomas (62 Tackles)
MLB O. Hoyte (60 Tackles)

Discipline first:

DT Mansfield Wrotto: "It's come to my attention that Wrotto was late to our last team meeting. It's a minor offense, but let's ensure that he won't be late again." - Meh... we need him against NC State, but I feel I have to suspend him for the first half.

After getting completely crushed by one strong running team, we come against another. With Philip Rivers out of school, the NC State team has relied on T.A. McClendon, despite a solid season from Jr-RS QB Jay Davis. McClendon is just too good - speedy and tough, and is close to 1000 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season. The receivers are fast - led by Tramain Hall, and there's an All-ACC caliber tight end on the strong side. The offensive and defensive lines are both outstanding; the best player and leader on defense is strong safety Andre Mattox. Mattox is an All-ACC performer, and is a hard hitter.

This is a pivotal game in our season - with only four games remaining, we need to finish 3-1 (and 2-0 in conference) to be looking at a possible bowl; which necessitates a win here.

A big boost in that this is the first game in some time with both Landry and Reis healthy - given our recent propensity towards the 4-2-5, this should have our best defensive players on the field all the time without needing to put Reis out of position at linebacker.

Our defense comes through to slow State down on the first possession and force a punt, at which point our offense goes to work on one of the more impressive drives we've put together this year. Our game plan is to establish the run and we do so to a tune of a 19-play drive. We do stall inside the ten and settle for a field goal, but a 3-0 lead and the confidence of our offensive line is a good thing so far.

The Wolfpack respond by going to the air to get downfield, then McClendon inside the five to take a lead; we strike back by catching their safeties napping and hitting Calvin Johnson for a long score. After a pair of stuttered drives, we get a nice break with Kenny Scott picking a ball off at the sideline and giving us possession at midfield with under two minutes to play in the half... but Pat misses a wide open Damarius Bilbo at the twenty yard line, and we have to settle for a long field goal attempt at the end of the half, which falls short and to the left. Still, looking solid, and about to get Wrotto back for the second half.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 10, North Carolina State 7

We pick up a field goal on our first possession of the half, then stop the 'Pack in a strange position - at our 36, they elect to go on fourth and five, apparently in that zone of no confidence between kicker and punter. No matter, a deep pass is overthrown and bit, and we've got the ball back and some control in the game. The third quarter ends with us knocking at the door - the midst of a goal-line stand, third and goal at the one. We call for the quarterback up the middle on a sneak (after stuffed twice on handoffs to Dixon at fullback and Grant at halfback), and this one works. We try for two to make it a two-touchdown game, but P.J. is stuffed on the outside, so we'll settle for a twelve point lead.

And a huge play on the kickoff return! I-Perfection Harris spears the returner, and the ball is loose - Joe Gaston falls on it, and it's our ball inside the twenty. We're down inside the five, but disaster - Patrick Carter is hit on a bootleg and loses the ball. So State gets it back all the same, but with two minutes less (five to play) on the clock, which we're watching closely. Down inside four and a half, and a big third and long after a Daryl Richard sack. The Wolfpack set up a screen to McClendon, but he's dropped behind the line and we'll force a punt - but Rashaun Grant fumbles! Down two scores, but the State crowd is rocking. Fourth down and six, electing to go rather than kick the three - and an incomplete pass. We do have the ball back, now, with just over two to go. We start working P.J. this drive - at State's first timeout with 1:48 to go, he has just gone over 1000 yards on the season. We do have to punt the ball away, but there's not enough time to do anything, and we come out with a huge win on the road. Great defensive play all around, and keyed by a nearly five minute edge in Time of Possession.

A huge win for Missouri that really puts them in the national spotlight. With Kansas and Iowa State left on the schedule (a combined 5-12), they have an awful good shot of meeting Oklahoma in a battle of unbeatens for the Big 12 title.

Oh, and this with Brad Smith out for the season with an injury. Not sure when it happened, but the Mizzou backup has been in for at least two games by the looks of things, and has played just fine.

Quarterback Controversy?

Who to play? Reggie Ball comes off suspension this week, but Patrick Carter has held the fort down admirably in his stead. Their respective stats:

<TABLE border=1><TBODY><TR><TD>Name (Record)</TD><TD>QBR</TD><TD>Comp</TD><TD>Att</TD><TD>Yds</TD><TD>TD</TD><TD>Int</TD><TD>Yd/Gm</TD><TD>Comp%</TD><TD>Avg</TD><TD>Sacked</TD><TD>Rush Att</TD><TD>Rush Yds</TD><TD>Rush TDs</TD></TR><TR><TD>Reggie Ball (2-2)</TD><TD>145.2</TD><TD>37</TD><TD>89</TD><TD>729</TD><TD>10</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>182.2</TD><TD>41</TD><TD>8.1</TD><TD>12</TD><TD>44</TD><TD>124</TD><TD>0</TD></TR><TR><TD>Patrick Carter (2-2)</TD><TD>141.5</TD><TD>36</TD><TD>73</TD><TD>644</TD><TD>4</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>107.3</TD><TD>49</TD><TD>8.8</TD><TD>11</TD><TD>43</TD><TD>181</TD><TD>2</TD></TR>

</TBODY></TABLE>

They have equal records at 2-2. Reggie Ball is a true Sophmore, 5'11", 195 lbs; while Pat is a redshirt freshman standing 6'3", 190 lbs. Ratings-wise, Reggie is the stronger quarterback across the board, with the edge in the major categories for a quarterback (Awareness, Arm Strength, Accuracy), while Pat Carter has a slight edge in Speed, Agility, and Acceleration.

In terms of the upcoming schedule, our next game is against the Connecticut Huskies - while they have a great backfield with Orlovsky and Caulley and an NFL-caliber Left Tackle in Ryan Krug, their defense frankly sucks and we should be able to run and pass all over the Huskies. After the Huskies we face the disappointing Virginia Cavaliers in a game which could seal our chances for a winning record overall and a .500 record in conference; hopefully placing us in bowl contention.

<B>UConn at Georgia Tech</B>

Preview:
Connecticut (5-3)
Overall: B-
Offense: B
Defense: B-
Special Teams: C

Key Players:
QB D. Orlovsky (2035 Pass Yards)
HB T. Caulley (870 Rush Yards)
MLB A. Fincher (65 Tackles)

With the appointment of Reggie Ball as starting quarterback, we have our preferred starting lineup in the game; no suspensions, no injuries. This Connecticut game should be a good test for our defense, but should still be a straightforward win to get back above .500.

The Huskies are led by first-team Big East and All-America candidate Quarterback Dan Orlovsky. Orlovsky is having a stellar year, completing 61% of his passes for 23 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. A pure pocket passer, Orlovsky has the measurables NFL scouts crave - 6'5", 236 lbs, he's sure to be playing on Sundays. Their halfback is nearly the opposite - 5'7" Terry Caulley is still short of 1000 yards on the season but should get there. He's been a threat catching the ball out of the backfield as well. The top receiver is Keron Henry, but he'll be out for our game due to injury; instead we'll be seeing a lot of Junior Jason Williams catching the ball (5 TDs on the year).

On the offensive line, there is one NFL-caliber star, that Senior Ryan King at left tackle. The rest of the line is decent but should be attackable.

The defense has none of the talent the offense shows. The captain is MLB Alfred Fincher, and to his left is second-team All-Big East OLB Maurice Lloyd; those are the two who will make the majority of the plays, but we should rack up the rushing yards today.

We may not get much insight into our quarterback situation today - on top of wanting to rush the ball a good bit, we're also staring at a downpour at Bobby Dodd. We do get a regional broadcast, however.

Orlovsky is 0-3 on their first drive, after trying to pick on Kenny Scott for three straight plays. After an exchange of punts, Dawan Landry is the first to make a mistake - letting a Connecticut receiver behind him for a long touchdown and a 7-0 lead. The Huskies are able to add another field goal in the first quarter as we have some problems with dropped passes - but the running game gets going in the second, and we look to take a lead into halftime - but the Husky kicking game is keeping them in.

Halftime: Connecticut 16, Georgia Tech 14

The second half gets interesting - Connecticut keeps the lead until the fourth quarter, but our rushing game proves too much as we're able to control the clock own to the wire, pushing in for the winning score with under a minute to play.

Final Score: Georgia Tech 35, Connecticut 31

Congratulations! You have just finished the #1 Greatest Game of all Time!

A tough game - tough to analyze Reggie's performance, as the rain had a serious effect on catches. There were at least four wide-open drops; and 10-24 for 120 looks much better than 6-24 for 58. He'll start again next week.

<B>Virginia at #24 Georgia Tech</B>

Preview:
Virginia (4-5)
Overall: A-
Offense: A-
Defense: B+
Special Teams: A

Key Players:
HB W. Lundy (864 Yards Rushing)
QB M. Hagans (1844 Yards Passing)
HB A. Perman (569 Yards Rushing)

Virginia is a very solid team, and it seems surprising to see them at 4-5 nearing the end of the season. With two games left, both against ranked opponents (#20 Virginia Tech), the Cavs find themselves in desperate need of a 2-game winning streak in order to position themselves for bowl qualification.

There are some injuries to this Virginia team, and one suspension - top-rated K Connor Hughes will be suspended for our game, and two major losses on defense as DE Chris Canty and FS Jermaine Hardy are both done for the season.

The starting quarterback is Marques Hagans - Hagans has 18 touchdowns against nine picks, and nearly 2000 yards in passing. The offense runs through halfback Wali Lundy - Lundy has over 800 yards rushing, and ten touchdowns. His backup is senior Alvin Pearman, who has over a six yards/carry average himself. Why? First team All-Americans in TE Heath Miller and G Elton Brown on the offensive line are two big reasons. The line is solid across the board, even aside from those two stars.

Defemsively on the line, Virginia is strong even without Canty, although much less deep. Another star waits just behind the line in OLB Darryl Blackstock. Blackstock has 4 sacks and 73 tackles on the season, and holds down the right side. The middle backers are Ahmad Brooks and Kia Parham - both with All-ACC potential, and both with two years of eligibility remaining. The possible vulnerability is in the secondary - with leader Jermaine Hardy out, the defensive secondary is average across the board.

A beautiful day and a full stadium greet us out of the tunnel - Herbstreit points out P.J. Daniels as being top-ten in the country rushing the ball, and there's where he sees our advantage.

Virginia wins the toss and gives us the ball. We do pick up one first down, but Reggie is 0-3 throwing the ball on the first drive, and there's some rumbling for Carter from the stands. We get surprised with a fullback drive on the second play from scrimmage that goes for about sixty, but it is called back for Clipping, and we get something of an early break. That lasts two more plays, until Hagans bootlegs around the right end for a forty-yarder. We'll have our hands full today. Heath Miller reels in a touchdown catch for a 13-0 lead - that stays that way, as Virginia's second string kicker blows the extra point. An opening?

Maybe not. Reggie Ball is picked off by Blackstock on a swing pass towards Darius Williams, but we finally slow the Cavelier offense, and a missed field goal keeps the score as is. Reggie runs a gorgeous playfake, but leads Curry just a bit much, and the catch is out of bounds rather than thirty yards downfield. Northing going for our offense in the first quarter.

We seem to finally get something going, picking up a couple first downs - but Ball throws his second interception of the day, to Ahmad Brooks - who returns inside the thirty. Coach is talking to Carter on the sidelines, and we may have a new signalcaller next series. Following a touchdown pass and a 20-0 Cavalier lead, we do see Patrick Carter coming out.

It doesn't matter in the slightest. Carter also throws a pair of picks in the half, and we get absolutely clobbered.

Halftime: Virginia 48, Georgia Tech 0

Reggie Ball back under center for the second half. Still doesn't matter. We get crushed, and we're looking for a win against Georgia to make a .500 record - miracles happen, right?

Final Score: Virginia 65, Georgia Tech 14

<B>Georgia Tech at #1 Georgia</B>

Preview:
#1 Georgia (10-0)
Overall: A-
Offense: A-
Defense: A-
Special Teams: B

Key Players:
WR F. Gibson (12 Rec TD)
MLB O. Thurman (62 Tackles)
HB M. Cooper (850 Rush Yards)

We head to Sanford Stadium for the Georgia game. Our final game of the season unless we pull off an improbable win - a tall order for a Bulldog team looking towards the SEC Championship and a possible National Title.

We don't get to face David Greene. He's out for four weeks due to injury - should get back in time for the bowl game, but the offense is in the hands of D.J. Shockley. Shockley had a killer game against Auburn a few weeks ago, and is completing nearly 60% of his passes for 850 yards, 8 TDs, and three picks. He's also a very speedy rusher.

The running game is by committee - the top rusher is redshirt sophmore Michael Cooper - Cooper has gone for 850 yards and 5 scores on the season. Unlike historical Georgia squads, this team is based around the passing game, not the runners - the leader of the wideout corps is a finalist for the Best WR award, with 654 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns. Reggie Brown has more yards and less scores, but both are heavy threats.

Freshman halfback Thomas Brown has not seen game action, in case anyone has interest in the kid.

The offensive line is solid but not spectacular... the defensive line is a different story, led by All-American David Pollack. Pollack has seven sacks on the sseason, as one of the defensive leaders. The interior line has a pair of 300-lb, All-SEC players; with a very good MLB in Odell Thurman. The defensive secondary is led by top-of-the-line FS Thomas Davis. The probable only weakness is in redshirt-freshman place kicker Andy Bailey - only 6 of 12 for field goals this season.

54 degrees, no rain... we're looking for any kind of an edge in this game we can find; so elect to wear the all-white alternate uniforms. We win the toss and elect defense first. Shockley is 1-3 and we get a three-and-out - exchanging a punt right back. Third and twelve for the Bulldogs, and we get a taste of their offense - a fly completion to Reggie Brown, one broken tackle, and a long touchdown for a 7-0 Georgia lead. Reggie Ball is throwing the ball much better than the Virginia game - we get a drive down into the red zone, but can't convert and Jordan hooks a field goal attempt.

Our offense is so close to keeping us in this game - but two fumbles each turn into Georgia scores, and we need to stop the bleeding. We are able to put a good score up near the end of the half to keep within range, but will need to stop the turnovers.

Halftime: Georgia 28, Georgia Tech 7

We do slow down the turnovers and play a better half overall, but there's no upset comeback in the cards - we wrap up our season in disappointing fashion, losing big to Georgia and Virginia back to back.

Final Score: Georgia 42, Georgia Tech 7

Unfortunately, I see a 5-6 season for the Yellow Jackets IRL as a distinct possibility.

I'm thinking 7-4 with wins over Sanford, UNC, Maryland, Duke, VT, NC State, and Connecticut. Although in reality we'll lose one of those and beat someone else. We'll see.

The played-out standings you've got don't seem terribly far-fetched other than the whacked-out 6-5 record for UNC. Carolina's going to get crunched by a lot of teams this year. I'd be startled to see them win more than four (W&M is the only sure one on the sked).

From my own perspective, I'll take 7-4 for State, especially with our murderous schedule this year. We start easy (Richmond) and end easy (ECU). The nine in between? *shudder*

Celeval

Yeah... UNC started out 4-0; beating Virginia by 3 and us by 5; then pounding Louisville. The 2-5 (2-4) record since then is much more likely.

Maryland (6-5)

Special Teams: A+

Key Players:
HB S. Maldonado (953 Rush Yards)
DE K. Eli (71 Tackles)
QB J. Statham (2220 Pass Yards)

A rematch here of one of the better games of the regular season - we dropped that game 27-24 in overtime. This game should be significantly different... not only does UMd lose the homefield advantage, we don't have the suspensions we had to deal with the first time around.

We need to keep an eye on Joel Statham - we gave up three of Statham's 12 touchdown passes on the season during our last meeting, and we will need a better game in pass coverage.

It's a cold, cold day - both teams can see their breath coming out onto the field - but it's clear, and it should be an beautiful day for football. Maryland guesses tails, and we win the toss - kicking off. We don't have a good start, however - a good runback on the kickoff starts the Terrapins on the 35, and the first play from scrimmage is a first down connection across midfield. We do force a punt, and drive well downfield - but a turnover inside the red zone ends our scoring opportunity.

An interesting followup, though - Wilkinson sat out the first time we played the Terps, and he comes up with a big sack here. Second and seventeen at about the one foot line, and we're thinking safety. We don't get it, but are sending the house on punt block, as they line up from the five. Grant is down with the return inside the 25. Ball is sacked on third down by the All-ACC Eli, however, and Jordan misses another field goal try. Still no score through one.

Our defense steps up with a goal-line stand after Maryland gets some offense going - holding the Terrapins to a field goal, but that's the only score for either team at the midpoint. We're moving the ball, but just can't string a couple of first downs together.

Halftime: Maryland 3, Georgia Tech 0

Reggie Ball is having a pretty good game - he's been accurate, but we're being held to short passes, and are getting stopped a yard short a number of times. We're able to add a tying field goal late in the third, and P.J. seems to be shaking loose the rust.

The running game kicks back in again after forcing a punt, and we're knocking on the door. Taking our time, eating up a few yards at a time, and there's just under four minutes to play when P.J. gets into the end zone. Maryland puts a couple of first downs together, but punts it away with two to play... and that'll do it, as we get to run the clock out with P.J.

Final Score: Georgia Tech 10, Maryland 3

"Chan Gailey, the NCAA has placed Georgia Tech on probation. Below are the penalties imposed."

10 less scholarships for 2 years.

I imagine this is for not suspending players quite as long as the NCAA thought I should.

Other disciplinary notes:
Kansas State has lost 10 scholarships for 2 years.
Marshall has lost 10 scholarships for 2 years.
Penn State has lost 10 scholarships for 2 years.
