The Mets made two stunning trades Friday, acquiring Pirates righthander Kris Benson and Devil Rays righthander Victor Zambrano.

The price for Benson was third baseman Ty Wigginton, Class AA lefthander Matt Peterson and a minor leaguer, with the Mets also receiving a minor leaguer in return.
The price for Zambrano was steeper: Class AA lefthander Scott Kazmir, considered the top pitching prospect in the Mets' system.

Zambrano came at a higher cost because he will not become a free agent until after the 2007 season. Benson, a potential free agent, amounts to a two-month rental unless the Mets sign him long-term

They should really just focus on development. They are going nowhere this year, and Benson/Zambrano don't really bring much to the table.

Either Duquette just lost his mind, or he has no decision-making power in the organization. Either way, he shouldn't be the GM of this team anymore.

The trade for Benson was a solid move by the Mets, but trading Kazmir+ for Zambrano was a very bad deal.
