Here's the scenerio: It's 2035. The Detroit Lions have won back-to-back Super Bowls and are in their third straight.

In a defensive battle with Cincinnati the game is tied with 40 seconds left in the 4th. Detroit ball, 4th & 1 to go at the Cincy 11.

What do you do?

Kick the FG.
(The kicker has been erratic, but this is a can't miss 38 yarder, right?)

Go for it!
(The running game has sputtered. The QB has a bum ankle, but was MVP of the previous SB.)

My secondary has given up several long plays this season. I lost two games with last minute comebacks by teams I shoula beat.

Oh, and you should post if you have any time outs left or not...

All 3 time outs for both teams.

I'd go for it on 4th and one. Plenty of time, and if you don't make it, it's overtime. I'd rather not leave it up to a kicker to decide a Super Bowl...

Kick the FG.
(The kicker has been erratic, but this is a can't miss 38 yarder, right?)It's only a 28 yard attempt if you're at the 11....always kick it from that distance.

Now we all know why math was always my weakest subject...

Unless your kicker is the son of "Automatic Adam" V. of course!!!! Winner of 2 of the last 3 SB's! Would I be pushing my luck to suggest 3/4 after this year, and the birth of a dynasty?!?!

I don't know why you wouldn't go for the FG.

If you go for it and you don't get the first down there is also still plenty of time for Cincy to comeback, just as much as if you did kick the FG. But at this point they would only need a FG to beat you.

You would force yourself to score a TD to win in this situation? An under 30 yard field goal with about 35 seconds left to win the SB is a no-brainer. You have to kick. Even if you miss, the best they get is the ball at the 20.

Unless it's blocked, of course...:p

I decided to go for it.

I don't want to risk a long kick return after the FG (assuming it is made.)

My RB's have fumbled a couple of times, so I'm not giving it to them.

My QB has been sacked a couple of times and fumbled, plus he has a bad ankle.

I run a fake FG pass, figuring other than a catastophic INT return or sack & fumble return leaves me in pretty good shape even if I don't get the 1st down...

TOUCHDOWN!!! The punter threw an 11 yard TD pass to the kicker!!!

Detroit wins it's third straight Super Bowl (the 1st was the 75th anniversary of it's last title 1957 - 2032!)

That's one of the worst calls in the history of the NFL...but I guess it worked.

Not even Sam Wyche would have been crazy enough to do that.

I just figured that my chances were pretty good of picking up a 4th & 1. And if I didn't get it the odds that I'd lose to a FG were about the same as kicking the FG and then either going to OT or losing on a TD pass outright... It's sad when you don't trust your defense.

Your chances of picking up a 4th & 1 were pretty good, except for 2 things:

1. You went for a fake field goal, which is probably the worst percentage 4th & 1 call you could make.

2. Even if you went for it with your offense, and you didn't score a TD but got a 1st down, you'd still be looking at virtually the same distance field goal. For most kickers, there's not much difference between an 18 yarder and a 28 yarder. In fact, the closer you get, the more severe the angle and more difficult the kick can be.

But hey, it worked. Perhaps the FOF Media was finally able to transfer the genius crown from Bill Belicheck's pickled noggin to your own.

Fake FG? Wow.

I'd kick the FG and tell my kicker I kill him before he leaves the stadium if he kicks the kickoff out of bounds.

hey , that kickoff out of bounds is still a touchy subject alright, leave it alone before I cry...
