View Full Version : Sportscenter Old School
Just saw a commercial for this. Apparently, sportscenter is bringing back a number of their old anchors next week (not sure how long this will run). First up on Sunday is Dan Patrick and Craig Kilborn. Should be interesting, if nothing else.

Wake me when the Big Show comes back, or Stuart Scott gets eaten by ravenous wolves. Whichever comes first.

I'm surprised Kilborn would be.

Unless Kilbron pulls a gun mid-show and demands ESPN go back to actual sports programming, consider me uninterested.

Where is Rich Eisen? He left a year ago, and even then the programming was better than it is right now. Shouldn't he be considered old school? I am shocked that Espn has not had a poll about Top Ten Old School anchors.

Ummmm, no. I'll still change the channel to ESPNews every time Sportscenter comes on.
Its a sad day when I can't stand to watch 15 seconds of Sportscenter. Doing this for a week isn't going to get me interested again.
Olberman was blatantly missing from the commericals. No chance in hell he ever makes an appearance on ESPN again.

Olbermann will not be back, although I'm not sure whether that's his decision or ESPN's. Probably ESPN's.

I liked watching Rich Eisen and I hope his reasons for leaving was he realized that the network was starting to go downhill.

I agree that Sportscenter has gone downhill. It used to be full of actual sports information but now I rely on ESPNNEWS Hotlist that starts at 3p.m to get me soild stories and interviews.

Actually Eisen either left or got fired the same as DA. He wanted to do more things and maybe have some creative control over a new type of show, and ESPN did not want this and just wanted him on Sportscenter so they parted ways. I always liked him.

I still watch Sportscenter as I get ready for work in the morning. It is hard to stop watching after 20 years. I agree that it has gone downhill and nothing could be worse than these live musical performances during the broadcast. It is the worst.
On his radio show, Dan Patrick said that Olbermann would not be one of the anchors comming back. Dan implied that wanted Olbermann to come back but he said there is no chance of it ever happening.
I will probably tune in to see some of the old anchors, although just seeing old 10 second clips would probably be enough for me.
Whatever happened to the guy who did the UpClose interview show? (his name escapes me).
Who was your favorite anchor or team of anchors? Kilbourne is my favorite and Patrick and Olbermann was probably the best duo.

I guess that's how bad it is now that they have to trot out the "old school" talent.

Steven A. Smith was yelling during the whole 30 minutes of PTI yesterday. I'm surprised the guy sitting across from him didn't get up and slug him.
As far as SportsCenter, why the need to freak out and scream about plays? Do people really like that?

PTI is one of my favorite shows, but I have not watched it for a week and a half now. How is it that Wilbon and Kornheiser get some much vacation time? I mean either they are both gone, or at least one of them is gone. In the last month, I think there was one week when they were both together. WTF.

Other ex-anchors coming back include, but are not limited to the following:
George Grande
Charley Steiner
Greg Gumbel
Bonnie Bernstein
Bob Ley and Chris Berman (??)
I don't know if Roger Twibel (sp?) will be there, but I'm sure we'll see Bill Mees on-air before we see Keith Olberman.

There is really no point in having SC "old school" week unless Keith and Dan are together. No point at all.

*WARNING: FOR SW OHIO/EXTRA INNINGS SUBSCRIBERS ONLY*
Please make him bring crappy fellow Reds announcer, Chris "70's Porn Mustache" Welsh with him. And leave him stranded with no gas money.
I like Grande, but I can't stand Welsh.

Am I the only one that preferred Dan Patrick and Kenny Mayne over Dan Patrick and Keith Olberman? Don't get me wrong, they were great and I like Olberman, but Mayne was brilliant IMO.

It died peacefully a couple of years ago. They just couldn't saturate the cable systems like ESPNews could. Since they were getting no coverage, they pulled their own plug.

Ohbytheway, I don't know how many people have seen this before, but there's an interesting segment with Keith Olbermann at this URL:

Scroll down through a couple of interviews to find it. For anyone interested in New Orleans media like myself, that particular website is golden. The interview with Olbermann is completely unrelated to New Orleans, though, so it's an interesting read for pretty much anybody who cares.

What was the story with Kenny Mayne - did he get pulled from Sportscenter? I haven't regularly watched the show in a few years, so I remember when he was partneredwith Patrick, then I remember not seeing him for a while. He went from the biggest gig on ESPN to trying to make it to 4 sporting events in one day and covering 4th rate sports in a span of a few months, it seems.
What happened there - was it just that he didn't connect with the SC audience and they had to pull the plug, or something else?

That's an excellent interview, thanks for the link. I always liked Olbermann. And while I think he would have joined the crowd had he stayed, he pretty well hit the nail on the head here:
Honestly, I have enormous guilt. Dan and I tried to bring that same ethos to SportsCenter that I'm using now on Countdown. The corollary to it is that you have to prioritize: Information first, Style second. That never translated to the next group, sadly; of course the world of sports has changed so much in the seven years since I left -- it's so much more self-indulgent now -- that it's as tough for sportscasters to not chest thump as it is for athletes. But we used to share a catchphrase which should be engraved on all studio desks at ESPN: "Real Men Don't Taunt." Still, there's the guilt. I'm firmly convinced that when I meet my maker, I'll hear "Didn't you realize that not everybody would get it? Why don't you sit over there for a thousand years and think about what you've done. Sit next to Dr. Oppenheimer and his little nuclear fission idea, and across from that man who invented cell phone ring tones." I'm not going to hell, but I am going to purgatory.

Mayne is good, but I always thought he was trying to be like Kilborn. Either that or ESPN hired him because their presentations were similar. Olberman and Patrick were both very original in their presentation. Unfortunately, because of them, everyone feels the need to be funny when showing sports highlights.

For those of you in the Boston area, there can be no doubt that Mike Adams was the greatest of all time.
