im surprised to see no doom 3 threads in here. i havent bought it yet, but im going during my lunch break today.
anyone already have it? and what are your impressions?

i've heard that if you are a fps fan, you will love it. but that it doesnt have the AI of half-life.
i've been a fan of the doom series since the first one came out like 11 years ago. i remember the first time i saw the game. it was at a my friend's brother's friends house. we were all hanging out and goofing off. the guy that lived at the house was playing it in the basement completely ignoring like 10 people that came over to his house to hang out. i didnt blame him one bit. then i remember begging my brother to let me play it on his 286 i think. and i even remember going to buy doom 2 at a local computer store (that i ended up working at later in my life during college). i remember i was like a few dollars short after the sales tax. the sales guy just sold it to me anyway and just told me to have fun. oh the good ol' days :)

$58 is a pretty steep price tag for this, but I guess if you're a Doom sort of guy, that shouldn't matter much.

The AI seems to be alright, at least. I seem to be having trouble configuring my system to run smoothly with the game - there's an occasional tearing of the screen. (FYI, I've got a 9800 Pro 128 meg video card, a gig of DDR, and a 2600+ AthlonXP chip)

I checked a few boards, and noticed that like most other games out there - the "automatic detect" for your system configuration settings is far too conservative. In any case, I turned the VSync on in the Advanced options - seems to have solved my problem. It's weird, though. It'll run at 60 FPS (activated via the console, I think the command is like: com_showfps 1 or something of the nature), and in certain circumstances, it drops tremendously down to 27, and then back up again.

I guess a patch will resolve the issue, I'm sure. Nothing game-breaking - a bit annoying at times, but so far I've managed to get it running pretty decent at 1024x768.

EDIT: As for the multiplayer options - I have to admit, I wish there was some kind of 'assault' or CTF type objective. It seems it's just mostly deathmatches and the like. The tournament thing sounds interesting, but I haven't bothered to go multiplayer yet to see how it runs.

i went home during lunch and bought the game. i noticed the same problem with performance. i have a pretty descent system (multi-threaded P4 @ 3.2 ghz, 128mb nvidia, i think 4700 series, and over a gig of ram running dual channel)
i did auto detect and it said medium. i thought, yeah right, so i turned it on high and it was unplayably choppy. i didnt see an advanced options section. ill look after i go home tonight from work.

It's one of the tabs under the system menu. Just your standard Shadows On, AA 2x-16x or Off, VSync On/Off, etc...

Fron what I've been reading, it sounds like the most important thing in your system for this game is the video card. In a medium level system, a really good video card can run the game in high detail with no problems. A high level system with an average video card can't.

These types of games are generally not something I have much interest in, but I'll be interested to see what kind of mods come out for it. Usually that's where the true creativity comes in for FPS from my point of view.

Agreed, I think this is where Doom 3 will make its real impact, the initial game has a great graphics engine and so-so gameplay from what my friends have said, but the other games that come out once the engine is licensed to other companies is where things will get interesting.

I haven't got this "into" a game since the original Resident Evil.

Ive been playing this now that I have a computer that will run it. My fiancee likes watching me play it, because it tries to shock you alot. I dont know how many times I have jumped.

My first problem with the game is the flashlight. Its kind of a love hate thing. I love the way it is implemented, but I hate using it. Right now I am on the last level of Alpha labs, and it does seem like they used it less on the last few levels. Or at least there were less rooms where you had to use it just to navigate around the room. If the darkness maintains this kind of balance It might not be a big deal.

The second problem I have is with the shotgun. It seems like it beats the other weapons I have hands down, except the chaingun. I just havent found the machinegun very usefull. Since most of the enemies I have encountered so far jump at you, and 99% of the rooms being cramped it just doesnt work well. And the only use for the pistol is the zombies.

Those being minor complaints though, I have really enjoyed this game.
