Trying out Mozilla

I know someone starts a thread about this every week, but this week is my turn. :)

This seems pretty nice. The tabs thing is pretty neat (but is going to require me to reorder my bookmarks). Does anyone have advice on use this? What other browers are out there that are good?

Mozilla FireFox is the best one out there. I very rarely use IE anymore.

use firefox and go to bugmenot.com and install the bugmenot extension for firefox (painless). It won't prevent you from having to register, but you just rightclick the page and a box will popup giving you the reg info you need.

The main reason I changed was security. Most viruses are written to exploit the security flaws that always crop up in outlook express. Also, mozilla/thunderbird also has a pretty good (but far from perfect) spam blocker.

I just found this out a couple of days ago. I've been holding the ctrl button when clicking on another link. Not that that was so difficult either, but this is even better.

These tips have madeFirefox faster for me:

To get started, type "about:config" in your FireFox address bar. The settings you're looking for are:

1.) network.http.pipelining
2.) network.http.pipelining.firstrequest
3.) network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
4.) network.http.proxy.pipelining
5.) nglayout.ititialpaint.delay

Set #1, #2, and #4 to "true". Set #3 to a high number, like 32. Set #5 to 0.

Enabling the pipelining features allows the browser to make multiple requests to the server at the same time. The "maxrequests" is the maximum number of requests it will send at once. I've heard that 8 is the most it will send at once, but setting it higher won't hurt, just in case. The initialpaint.delay is the length of time (in milliseconds) after the server response before the browser begins to paint the page.

Adjusting those settings will help pages render much faster in FireFox. In fact, my own observations have been that, tweaked in this manner, FireFox will render faster than Opera (and yes, I realize that others may experience different results).

My favorite Firefox extension is called Stumbleupon (http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=138&vid=438&category=). This is my favorite since it allowed me to visit sites I would have never visited before. Check it out.

What other browers are out there that are good? I use Avant Browser, it piggy backs off IE but has a popup blocker and tabs. I'm not going to engage in an arguement that one is better than the other, but I prefer this over Firefox.

Yeah I really like Firefox as well...but it really bugs me when it won't play videos (insert porn joke here) because it won't download the plug-in. Then I have to open up IE to watch.

Yeah, I mean LookOut comes with it's own virus-scripting language. Thunderbird doesn't have that added feature.

That is a bad flaw. I'm using Firefox right now but within the next hour's surfing I'll hit a site that Firefox reports unavailable and IE will load it for me.

Other weaknesses:

It has a habit of loading in characters to a password entry halfway through typing the correct password causing me to re-enter.

Occasionally, having hit an unavailable site, it will report all subsequent sites unavailable until closed and reloaded.

It doesn't report URLs loading as consistently as IE. With some dubious redirecting happening these days I like to know what's going on. Firefox doesn't always tell me.

I miss the feature in IE where the favourites list with full screen view disappears off screen left while I have to close it with Firefox. That means I constantly have to open and shut the favourites list as I surf around my regular sites.

A pity because otherwide I prefer it to IE.

I'm back with IE after, what, about an hour? I edited a post on the BigSoccer board and suddenly, on trying to repost, Firefox decided not to recognise the site again (it had posted the original message). I had to load in IE to complete the edit.

FYI, the "full release" of Mozilla Firefox will be released tomorrow, 9 November 04.
I have a few problems with Mozilla, such as not being able to "Save target as..." (i.e. when I'm trying to download RvB and Strangerhood files) and some javascript popups won't open for me no matter how hard I try.

But I still use Firefox 95% of the time.

This has become my favorite firefox extension. Adblock and flashblock do a pretty good job, but with this extension you don't just block ads but instead permanently rip the adspace from the page. It's fairly new (at least to me) so I thought I'd pass it along.

This thread is bumped so I finally upgraded Firefox - I have been using 0.8 on my desktop for a long time.

Finally upgraded and now have these extensions-
-Forefastfox (recommended from FOFC)
-Gmail Notifier - Tells me when I have a new message
-FoxyTunes - I can play music from my browser through any media player
-PlayLaunch - So I can watch videos from music.yahoo, always bothered me that I couldn't before!
-Copy Plain Text
-DictionarySearch

I was tempted to download an extention called Leet Speak, that copies normal text and uber d00ds it, just to compete with illinifan but alas..

Thats largely a myth, and one that will become increasingly exposed as it gains a wider audience. Is it safer right now. Yeah, mainly b/c not as many virus writers are gunning for it. Do I prefer it. Yeah, its a little more fluid than IE.
