Has anyone here ever filed for a patent?

I had an idea that is simple and isn't out there to the best of my knowledge. I was looking into filing a patent for it so I can make my fortune and play FOF all day. Has anyone here ever done it before? I was looking at the U.S. Dept of Commerce's site and, like you would expect, it is a conveluted mess. Any ideas?

My wife is in the process of filing for a patent. Be ready to fork over some cash for a patent search (making sure no one already has your idea somewhere) and for the actual filing, in the 4 figures range. If you want more details, let me know and I'll have her fill you in.
