I am going to detail a Pot Limit Hold em tournament I played using a program called Frank's Card Room. This program allows you to create tournaments in a variety of formats with up to 200 players, with customizable stacks, blind structures, and level durations. You can also create custom opponents, but for this tournament I will just stick with the default stock of characters, from which 199 opponents will be chosen randomly to compete against me, Matt Jones.
The structure I have set up will be similar to the main event of the WSOP, though I can't duplicate it with this software exactly. Everyone starts with 10,000 chips, and the blinds start very low, 25/50. Each level will last 30 minutes, allowing for a lot of play (this game moves quickly, so lots of hands/hour). This game only allows Pot Limit hold 'em for some reason, so that's what we will play.
200 players are seated. Outlasting everyone else in the room seems an impossible goal. However, with a slow blind structure, I think I have a better than average chance of being atop the mountain at the end. The Director gives the signal to begin play, and the cards are in the air...
I start the with the Dealer Button. At my table are:
TheSerpent
Liono
Legolas
Belle
TheDaddy
TheDuchess
Mary
Each of these players will have their own style of play, so it will be up to me to try to figure that out.
Level 25/50
Belle wins the first pot of the tournament with a pot sized raise from middle position. I folded A4o from the button.
After two hands, TheSerpent gets whisked away to another table. Must've been something big already. We are now 7 handed. A glance at the leaderboard shows 5 players eliminated already. Not much action at my table, yet. When the BB gets around to me, I get T5o and see the flop free 2 handed. J95 flop, check check. 8 turn check check. 8 river, i bet 125 and get called. MP turns over AJ and my stack is 9825. CptnBlack joins to my left with 9925.
I limp from the button with QTo. Flop is KQ7 check check to me. I bet 100 and get called by Mary to me right. Turn is an 8 and she bets into me 150. I throw my cards in and have 9650.
CptnBlack is moved away and The Hoover joins with 10,450 chips.
Mary raises me out of my Big Blind, holding K4o. 9575 after posting my small blind. I get dealt 93h and limp first in, The Hoover checks. Flop is AAK, two hearts. I check call a small bet. Turn a 4c. I check call another small bet. River is 2s and I check fold. Probably not the best way to play that, and I am down to 9375.
The Hoover and The Daddy get into a raising war, and The Daddy winds up all-in after the turn. Board is K79A with two clubs. The Hoover turns over K5c and The Daddy has AJo. The river is an 8h The Daddy cripples The Hoover (975 left). The Daddy takes the first big pot at our table and has a big lead on us now with 19,600.
On the Tournament Leader Board, 180 players are left, and the chip leader is Mrs Lopez, with 31,775. The Daddy is not even in the top 12 at this point.
To this point the most aggressive player at the table has been Mary, who has 11,300 chips. I will keep my eye on her a bit with that regard. The Virgin has joined our table now with 9875.
I get ATo in MP. I raise to 125 and get called by The Daddy. Flop is JJ8 and he bets the pot into me. I raise and he re-raises. I throw them in again. Getting pushed around a good deal so far. 8,375 chips and The Daddy is over 20,000.
I limp in with A5d and get a good flop, A95 with two spades and a diamond. I bet 100 and both Mary and The Duchess fold. 8475.
KTo in the BB and I win it with a 100 bet after the K98 flop. 8575.
I fold my QTo from the SB after the flop. 8525.
The Duchess gets The Hoover all-in with QTc against The Hoover's 44. A Queen on the flop ends the tournament for The Hoover. Mary is still picking up some pots uncontested pre-flop and has 11,325 chips.
Free flop with 54o against TheDuchess. Flop is 965 rainbow. She bets 25 to me and I call. Turn is a 5 completing the rainbow. She bets 225. The river is slightly uncomfortable, a 6. I bet the pot right into her, she raises, and I call and win the pot. 10,250.
To be continued...
