Wouldn't you like to be a homer too?

I answered yes, but it isn't worded as it fits me.
Yes, I always support the local teams.
Well I'd say that isn't true. If I move to Wisconsin, I'm not going to turn into a Packer fan. So I'd say I answered the "yes" portion based on this criteria.

I support the Saints because I grew up in N.O.. Pure homer there.
But I root against the Hornets because I don't like to support any team that moves and because they are taking public money that could go toward keeping the Saints in town. And they never were "my" team.
Just slapping a New Orleans label on something won't make me like it.
Outside of the Saints, I tend to root more for players than teams--Though I am partial to the Dolphins and Broncos.
Finally, with no other considerations at play, I tend to root for small market/underdog teams.

Falcons - Yes
Thrashers - Yes
Hawks - Somewhat
Braves - Hell no
I've grown into one, I guess...but before I moved to Atlanta, I didn't follow the NFL (college football only), didn't follow the NHL, didn't follow the NBA (aside from Jordan), and have been a lifelong Reds fan. So I didn't change my teams to become a homer...there's just an opportunity to see all these teams live and I take advantage of that.

Not particularly.
I'm about as much a Dodger fan as a Braves fan, and probably more of a general fan of the game than either.
About the only NFL team that I actively cheer for would be the Colts, I only follow the Falcons out of some sort of morbid curiosity.

Jets - one of the local teams. certainly the (historically) harder of the 2 to be a fan of.
basketball - dont care, but I enjoy the Mavs and Mark Cuban
baseball - Yankee hater = Red Sox fan. Even when I was a big baseball fan, I never had a team.
hockey - dont care, but Devils over Rangers for sure
edit, so overall I would say no. For instance I've been following the Houston Texans since inception, and consider myself a fan of them. Since I don't follow other sports, I have room for another NFL team. :)

I can't be a homer as I am thousands of miles away.
I like the Yankees because the only MLB game I have ever attended was a Yankees game (in Toronto in '96). My cousin was a Jays fan so I had to root for the Yankees. I joined up at exactly the right time :)
I like the 49ers because they were the team that we saw on television most often when I started watching the NFL. Montana was my favorite player, so San Fran was my favorite team.
I like hockey, but I don't follow any specific team.

When I was a kid, once I moved away from Detroit (whose teams I still root for), I used to automatically root against any team where I lived (Dallas, Atlanta, Miami). My favorite baseball and football teams were, and still are, the Phillies and Broncos. I first stepped foot in Philadelphia in 2001 and Denver in 2003.

When I was kid in new jersey it seemed like most of the folks where i lived were jets/mets fans. GIants/Yankees were seen as more new yorkreally? Jersey is dominated by Giants fans - I would speculate that it's about 70% Giants to 30% Jets. The Jets own Long Island, but that's about it.
Mets/Yankees is pretty split, but the Yankees success has won them a lot of fairweather fans.
Also, the splits are generally Jets/Mets, Giants/Yankees... for whatever reasons.
I have 2 odd friends who are the rare Giants/Mets and Jets/Yankees fans.

Grew up in southern WV, so Cincy and Pittsburgh were the two closest teams. Went to my first game in '76 (not that I remember) and while I was growing up my dad took my brother and I up to Cincy to catch a series at least once a year. Haven't been up to see Great American yet, but I catch them when they come here to play the Braves. This year for my birthday, my wife gave me tickets to see the Sept 21-23 series right behind the visitor's dugout at Turner Field. I'll taking my daughter too and she's promised to let me outfit her in Reds gear for the games :)

heh, i probably have noticed, i guess just always seeing the atlanta location throws me off. yea, i just went to great american 2 days ago with the 2 back to back homers and 11-5 win.. you really should come up here, it's a beautiful stadium. i was at the second row from the top down the third base line and saw everything perfectly. same with any section, as i've sat nearly everywhere in that park already (EXCEPT FOR THE LEFTFIELD BLEACHERS!).. getting the seats right behind larue with food service and all that is really the best though. :)

Grew up in north carolina so it was kinda impossible to be a homer outside of college basketball. I developed very strong loyalties to the cubs which aren't going away b/c I moved to Atlanta.
I am a homer in the NFL I suppose, but the timing was nice. The panthers came around soon after Dallas turned evil, making the switch very easy.

I am not a homer as much as I am just a fan of the teams I grew up watching all the time because my dad did.
I became a Cardinals and Blues fan very early on because they were who my dad watched even though we lived in Dallas at the time. Although I rooted for the Cowboys in the NFL (still do sorry Kodos). St. Louis didn;t have an NBA team so we were Mavericks fans. (The Blackman-Aguirre-Tarpley years. Ah the memoreies :))
I root for Nebraska football because my dad grew up in Lincoln. And I root for Mizzou sports because I have spent the majority of my life in Missouri. So not exactly the hometown team in all cases, but my teams haven't changed since I was a kid.
I do tend to like to see the local teams do well in general. As long as they aren't playing one of my other teams I will always root for the Rams and SLU etc, but they aren't my first love.

Well, I'm from the central coast of California, virtually in the middle of the Bay Area and Los Angeles. So growing up my dad's side of the family lived in the bay area and I grew up visiting and watching A's and Warrior games, hence I'm an A's and Warrior fan.
I was pretty young when the Raiders were still in Oakland, but became a fan when they moved from Oakland to LA since they were the closest team outside of the 9ers (whom I can't stand).
In the last 6 years or so I started to pay more and more attention to hockey and started to like the Sharks because my dad's company has season tickets and I go to a bunch of games each year.
Lastly, I have a soft spot in my heart for the Eagles. Randall Cunningham played high school football about 30 minutes south of where I live and so when he got drafted by the Eagles I pretty much became an instant Eagles fan. I kinda lost interest in them once he left, but Donovan McNabb has sparked my interest again because he's my favorite player in the NFL today.

I'm probably somewhat of a hybrid, support the teams I grew up with but no longer would call them "local". I support "some" of the teams I consider local but not the majority.
Florida State - Yes. But I try to be fair in my opinion.
Miami Hurricanes - No. But I root for them except for when they play Florida State but for now I cheer for them no matter but that will change in a few years.
Miami Dolphins - Die hard fan. But not a homer because I dont like pro sports.
Miami Heat - Fan.
Florida Marlins - Nope.

my two favorite teams are from cities I've never been to. I do tend to at least follow the local New England teams - Pats, Bruins, and Sox - but I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of any of them. We'll see if that changes as my kids get older and (presumably) start rooting more for the locals.

No, because I've moved so much.
I grew up a Redskins fan, and will remain so until I die, no matter where I live. I'm a Vikings fan by marriage.
As for baseball, I'm a Diamondbacks fan first (lived in AZ for ten years, was there when they expanded through their WS win). I'm warming up to the A's, just because they're easy to follow out here in Sac, partly because their AAA club is here. I grew up liking the Orioles, but Angelos has really soured me on that team. I haven't followed them very closely since Ripken retired.
In basketball, it's probably the Phoenix Suns and the Sacramento Kings in a dead heat.
I don't follow hockey, or MLS. If I did, it'd be the Coyotes and the Earthquakes.
For college sports, it's Arizona State.

I'm from NJ. Only reason the Giants are in there is because the Baltimore Colts left when I was 1 and I wasn't watching football then, so the Giants were my team of choice. Family is from MD though.

Total homer here. I'm surprised at how many of you guys don't support the local team.
Braves: YES

Hawks: Hate the NBA, but they are the only team I care about, so YES

I would feel dirty rooting for a team outside of Georgia.

Maybe it's because I moved so much that I didn't automatically become a homer. I still root for my true hometown teams in Detroit, but wherever else I moved, up until I moved to Tally, I generally rooted against those teams. Of course, it was easy to root against the Astros and Rangers in the early 80's and the Braves and Falcons in the mid-to-late 80's. I don't think I cared one way or the other about the Cowboys, Oilers, Mavericks, or Hawks. Oh, and I also rooted against Texas A&M when I spent a year and a half in that hellhole called College Station.

At this point, different location or not, Im with those teams for better or worse, in sickness and in health for as long as we both shall live.

Yes and no
Bengals-Oh hell yes, Who Dey
Reds-Eh. I pull for them and enjoy an occasional game but I'm not a huge baseball guy so there is little emotional attachment.
UC Bearcat basketball-No friggin way. Grew up a Xavier fan and I don't much care for police horse punching, non graduating, drug dealing, girlfriend hitting, mother hitting, roommate torturing and almost murdering and drunk driving players and coaches.
Xavier Basketball- Actually, it's more by chance that this is the local team I adopted early. I was in grade school with the brother of Byron Larkin(all time leading scorer) while he was playing at XU. Plus, at that time, my dad got a lot of XU tix from business associates.
UC football-strangely enough, I really pull for them. I think it's because they are underdogs in their own community. Not to mention, a lot of high school players that I follow locally end up there.

I was really only addressing the local teams. But I have pretty much always been an ND fan. Maybe it's the Catholic thing. My dad was an ND fan and we attended our first game together a few months before he passed. That was kind of special. Also, I attended the same high school that Gerry Faust made his name at so many of the people around me growing up followed ND for that reason. It was during the Faust years that I became a fan so I was certainly not jumping on any bandwagons. Really, I was pretty young when I became a fan of most of my teams.

I voted No, but I guess it could be Yes as well.
I root for the Browns because I lived in Cleveland until '86 and got to see Sipe and Kosar. I root for the Reds because I didn't know what baseball was (thanks to those great Indian teams of the 80's) until I moved to Cincinnati. I root for the Bearcats because I go to UC.
I said no because I root for these teams no matter where I am.

I guess yes would be the right answer, but the local teams aren't my favorite teams except for the Cowboys. However, I do root for the Mavs (second favorite team behind the Rox), the Rangers (favorite AL team), and the Stars (third favorite team behind Edmonton and the Avs)...
Edit: After re-reading the question ("Do you only root for the local sports teams?"), I would have to change my answer to no. Obviously, as what I wrote above would indicate, most of my favorite teams are out of town teams. I do root for all of the local teams, though...

The only "local" team that I ever rooted for was IU when I attended college there. And I look at rooting for your alma mater differently than rooting for your hometown team.
