I predict that Maccabi Tel-Aviv will not advance.

Some notes:
* FFF is starting with a -1 penalty for having a name which is too long to fit into the spreadsheet cells, making entering the predictions into the spreadsheat a little bit more annoying.
* BreizhManu gets a -10 start, as it won't be fair to let others to enter the competition, with second place being the best they can get.
* Cartman will get no points for PSV, even if they finish second if the UEFA decides to replace PSV with the other team from Eindhoven, Eindhoven, he'll get 100 bonus points, independant on their finish in the group stages.
* Desnudo is entered with only Maccabi Tel-Aviv finishing 4th. As per the scoring rules, he will get 0 point if he's correct.
All joking aside, I failed to mention the deadline, your entry has to be posted before kickoff of the first group stage match on September 14th.
Also, edited posts won't count as entries, mistakes should be mentioned in additional posts.

(in other words, did I do OK ? or do I suck at this game too???)Good question, really.
I've failed to post the traditional scoring rules as set by good ol' Kosta.
2 points for correctly picking a group winner
2 points for correctly picking a group runner up
1 point for correctly picking a top 2 team in the top 2, but at the wrong position
1 point for predicting the #3 team correctly
With a max of 5 points per group that's a max of 40 points for the round.

Real Madrid - starting to find their stride, and can't pick against the talent
Inter - tough call, but I don't think porto is as good as last year
Chelsea - running through everyone at this point, great matchup though
Olympique Lyon - I got nothing
Bayer Leverkusen - different story if Morientes could play, but no Morientes, Cisse, pongolle, kewell = no goals for Liverpool
PSV Eindhoven - PSV can afford to focus on CL, love Demarcus, & Monaco can't do it again (edit - I was thinking they had a big lead on Ajax, didn't realize AZ was only 2 pts back)
Manchester United - Hate em, but the've looked pretty damn good lately as long as there are no goalkeeping gaffes.
Bayern München - Arsenal have looked whipped lately (barring last weekend) and they always collapse in the CL ... eventually.

Thanks for the bump - this is my new handle (formely Aad...)
Real Madrid in a canter over a Juventus team
Barcelona to come through over Chelsea - especially without Robben
Milan- though this is as much about wishing as predicting
Arsenal - Perhaps generous, but when free-flowing, this is the best team in Europe
FC Porto - Internazionale (Inter - no doubt)
Werder Bremen - Olympique Lyon (Lyon are too good to lose to a weak Werder Bremen side)
Liverpool - Bayer Leverkusen (My heart says Liverpool, and my head is inclined to agree - Liverpool is gold)
PSV Eindhoven - AS Monaco (Monaco - Saviola to come through).

With hockey out and the NBA boring as hell (plus not much of a pro hoops fan), I'll watch the game tomarrow. One postive thing of the lockout is that soccer is getting more attention from me, and its pretty cool.
Have they ever considered doing a best-of-three, orwhatever series? What is the logic behind the two game series?

Have they ever considered doing a best-of-three, orwhatever series? What is the logic behind the two game series?
They go by aggregate goals; for instance Bayern beat Arsenal in Munich today 3-1. That means if Arsenal win the next match in London 2-1 Bayern go through because the total goals would be Bayern 4-3 Arsenal. If the goals are equal after both matches, they go by away goals, which makes Arsenal's late goal crucial. Now if they(Arsenal) win 2-0 they go through because they would have an away goal and Bayern wouldn't. If the away goals are equal, they go to extra time, followed by penalty kicks.

The reason for two matches is that it removes the advantage of a home tie normally associated with knockout competitions. Whether that's good or not is open to debate :)

Just curious,
What is "offsides" exactly in soccer/football, and are the leagues differnet in terms of style?
I notice that AC Milan plays a very controlled, more techinal passing attack and the United play a more fitness, physical-skilled game? Do the big leagues play certain styles?

I'm sure someone will come up with the technical definition, but you must have 2 or more opponent players between you and the goal/goaline you are attacking when the ball is played forward by one of your players. Otherwise you are offsides. Basically, you can't camp in front of the goal when the defenders move forward. There's a rule in some leagues about it being ok as long as you dont' affect the play, but that's the gist of it.
As far as the different leagues. You pretty much nailed it on the head. The English league (ManU) is typically characterized by fast paced but rugged, physical w/ hard tackling. The Spanish leagues and Italian leagues (Milan) are considered more technical - better passing, better ball skills, not as physical.
Desnudo
02-23-2005, 03:48 PM
Milan certainly schooled Man U in passing and ball skills today. What a blunder by Carroll.
As for the offsides, the easiest way to look at it is to know that any offensive player must be even with, or in front of, at least one defender (besides the goalie) when the ball is played towards him.

An early spoiler, we've got only two contenders left for the title of best UEFA Champions' League 2004/2005 tipper. The one person is most likely to win it all, unless PSV and Liverpool both reach the final, in which case the second contender wins the overall standings. Additionally, we've got seven contenders left for the 1-2-3 rankings. April 26th and 27th we'll know a bit more about who to expect to see win this thing.
By the way, it's a good season to be a Dutch soccer fan, we're having semi-finalists in both European competitions (PSV in the Champions' League, AZ in the UEFA Cup). England (Liverpool and Chelsea in the Champions' League) and Italy (Milan AC in the Champions' League, Parma in the UEFA Cup) have two each as well, Portugal (Sporting CP) and Russia (CSKA Moskva) are still represented in the UEFA Cup with one team.

Being completely right gives a huge advantage here, while being semi-right will cost you about half of the points. Had Milan beaten Liverpool, Crapshoot would have gotten 12 points more, Moriarity only 7 more. Bitch about the scoring system, but that's what I've used the previous two seasons as well.

Okay, I stand corrected by myself, te scoring system is the same as last season (2003/2004) as I used the same spreadsheet, however in 2002/2003 there was a different scoring system due to the CL competition format being different as well.
Clearly my statement above that the quarter finals through final stage would give a max of 40 points wis incorrect as well, the perfect score adds up to 50 points.

Didnt mean to bitch dude- sorry for giving that impression. I don't understand the system, that's all. The same result can result in different points for both parties ? No big deal, in any case.

The 'bitch' part wasn't as a serious comment as it may have looked. I realized I forgot to post the scoring system only now and figured it could have been confusing. I hope everything is clear now and you both (Crapshoot, Moriarity) can be happy about the final score of yesterday's game. The rest can still bitch about the scoring system, afterall, they didn't win. ;)

Crapshoot picked AC Milan to beat Liverpool in his prediction above.
.
Ahh, I didn't look all the way back (I was going by his comment that he was the only one to pick Liverpool all the way through).
Anyways, I love a good controversy. :D Plus i like bumping any thread where i actually win something along with my favorite team.
