Winning Etiquette

So I just took a horrible bad beat in a home poker tournament, and got quite miffed with the result. A friend's little brother and her girlfriend were playing with us for the first time. I was short-stacked, and went all in with A9 offsuit after a flop of 7 9 x rainbow (I was the little blind). The turn was an ace...but one of the two callers stayed in with 58s and the 6 on the river made her straight (other caller had A-7). After winning, and people helping push the chips to the winner, she says to me "Oh, did I win?"

Is it just me, or is that both incredibly rude and uncalled for? It's bad enough to be beaten so horribly, but come on.

Sounds to me like you're just upset you lost as that is pretty minor. I've never had a problem with someone else doing a little gloating if they kick my ass.

At our home game, there is sympathy when a bad beat is dished out, but we also realize we play pretty wild and crazy and they are to be expected and there is also much gloating.

It may not be the best etiquette, but, it's something that you're just going to have to deal with. It's certainly acceptable.

I always smile and act like a big victory was well deserved, that usually will result in at least one person explaining to the loser, "I would have stayed with that too..." It keeps everybody feeling like they didn't get smoked, just had bad luck (or timing).

Yes. If she hasn't played before, it's very much a possibility. I played a few weeks ago with some friends, 2 who have never played before and needed the rules explained to them.

During the game, these people would call to the river and not even know what their hand was (unless they had pairs of course. But flushes and straights sometimes they wouldn't). They got some lucky breaks and didn't know they won.

But I loved them, because most of the money I won that night came from them two.

I think it's okay for her to rub it in a little bit... of course, that doesn't mean it shouldn't piss you off.

Seriously, I don't know if she knew she won or not, but I have a strong inclination that she did know. I was quite happy about the Ace coming on the turn, (giving me top two pair), and thought I had the hand won - I flipped my two cards over and asked the two girls who had called me if they could beat it. They flipped over their two cards, my friend Nicole having A7 for two pair, and the girl I did not know having the 9 high straight with 58. People at the table reacted ("Oh shit!"), started pushing the large mound of chips in the pot towards her, and she looked me directly in the eye and said "Oh, did I win?"

It wasn't as if she carelessly uttered it -- she looked me directly in the eye when she said it. And watching her play the rest of the tourney (before I went out and the few hands I watched after), she only played a few hands, and the only hands she played after the flop were a flopped full house (her pocket Kings caught an 8-8-K flop -- she had both other eights play into her the whole time) and a flopped flush (she had the Queen, and the King and Ace were on the board). I'll never know if she knew, but I think it was intentional -- and based upon her ultra-tight play, I have no idea why she stuck around with an inside straight draw to an all-in and a call of the all-in.

It sucked, and I'm fine now...but at the time, it was like a slap in the face. So as I got up to leave and go putz around on the computer, I slapped her. Well, no, I didn't...but I sure as hell wanted to.
