Last season we had some fight songs - this season some history.
George P. Burdell
Taken from tbook.org
The legend of George P. Burdell is one of whimsy, practical jokes and longevity. George P. Burdell -- he is never called by any other name -- entered Georgia Tech in 1927 with the class of '31 and is still enrolled. The mythical student got his start when Ed Smith, an incoming freshman, mistakenly received two applications. He used the first for himself and on the second one gave the first name and initial of a relative who was the headmaster of his prep school, George P. Butler. Butler was reputed to be a strict disciplinarian. He was also an alumnus of UGA and even a former player on one of their football teams. Smith stopped at George P. B. He then finished with Burdell. The origin of the surname is somewhat unclear. One version of the story says that Burdell was the maiden name of Smith's best friend's mother; another version claims it was the name of Smith's cat. At this point, George P. Burdell entered Tech's roll books for posterity. When Smith arrived on campus, he began signing the fictional name in addition to his own to all of the class rolls. He also made out duplicate examination papers, changing enough to avoid the possibility of being accused of copying from a ghost who was a product of his own imagination. He eventually convinced several Tech professors that Burdell was a student in good standing. Smith was able to enroll George into all of his classes, and in 1930, George was granted his Bachelor's of Science degree. In the years that followed, other students took up the task of keeping Burdell alive - even achieving his Master's degree.

According to Tech tradition, Burdell subscribed to magazines for which he never paid, and he harassed insurance agents by ordering policies and then disappearing into the limbo from whence he came. He ordered furniture on mail order and had it delivered to unsuspecting fraternity houses on a C.O.D. basis, and he wrote letters to the editor by the basketful. His frequent victims were the society editors of the Atlanta papers. For several years, a big story appeared annually on the society page about the big ball he had given for the young debutantes.

During World War II, Burdell attended Harvard University with a Naval unit. The Harvard registrar never solved the case of George P. Burdell until the Naval unit left the campus. For 12 missions over Europe, Burdell flew with a B-17 crew. His career came to a sudden end when a former Tech student became operations officer and came upon the name while reading over the combat flight logs. Many years have passed since George P. Burdell first appeared on class rolls at Georgia Tech. Where is he now?

Later in World War II, George changed his branch of service, and enlisted into the Eighth Air Force. Here George led a more visible career, with a longer paper trail. His name first showed up in aircraft in North Africa and later in Europe, but it was in Europe that his fame cost him his wings. A flight officer, who happened to also be a Tech alumnus, was reviewing the flight roster for a formation of B-17's when he spotted the name of George P. Burdell. The officer reviewed the records of his crews; discovering that only one other flier had been a Tech alumnus, he caught the prankster and killed George's flying career.

In the 1960s, it looked as though Burdell would be forced to leave school because all registration would be computerized. Not to go down without a fight, Burdell wrote one of his letters to the editor of the Atlanta Journal saying the officials of Georgia Tech would not let him register. This caused a great commotion on campus. A few days after registration was completed it was found that Burdell was registered for 3,000 hours, which assured his presence at Tech for many more years. He is still on campus, as evidenced by a recent column in the Atlanta Journal signed by George P. Burdell, Regents' Professor, wherein he stated, "The continued clamor and ridicule of my name can no longer proceed. I am and have been for 10 years dean of humanities and fine arts." George P. Burdell is also listed in a recent edition of a campus paper, the Georgia Tech Whistle. Yes, George P. Burdell still lives.

Slider Information

Some slider changes from last season. While I think the running game balanced out pretty well near the end; for most of the season we didn't throw many interceptions, nor did we come up with any. Both the human and CPU interception sliders are being bumped up some here. Another open question is the pass rush - despite a pretty good defensive line, we got no pressure on the quarterback. We're pulling down both the CPU and our own Pass Blocking.

Now that we have some kind of choice, we ease up a bit in the non-conference scheduling. Navy leads us off - partly since if we don't keep the boosters happy, that may be where I'm coaching in two years. An old Georgia Tech coach follows up with O'Leary at Central Florida. The rough games here are spaced out - the toughest two are at #8 Virginia Tech in week 3, and traveling to the Orange Bowl in week 8. We do have a shot here at turning into an 8-win team in the regular season if we play well.

The schedule gets an A- ranking for strength, which reflects the respect that the ACC has in conference play. We should get off to a strong start - Navy and UCF will give us the time to explore our new playbook.

2005 Roster: Quarterbacks - Grade B-

#1, Reggie Ball - Jr
5'11", 195 lbs
75-195 passing for 1288 yards, 11 TD, 6 Int
82-102 rushing for 1 TD
OV SP ST AW AG AC CA BT TP TA
89 78 52 82 80 80 56 59 87 87
Reggie Ball remains the starter in this, his third year. He held off a tight challenge from Patrick Carter last season, brought on by his four-game suspension halfway through the season. He tailed off strongly after those missed games - throwing five of his six interceptions in the latter half of the season. His biggest weakness is the low 38% completion rate, although a much better performance in the Continental Tire Bowl gives some hope for this season.

#4, Patrick Carter - So-RS
6'3", 190 lbs
39-86 passing for 647 yards, 4 TD, 2 Int
47-174 rushing for 2 TDs
OV SP ST AW AG AC CA BT TP TA
76 82 48 65 80 85 59 52 84 78
Carter did well filling in for Reggie Ball last season, and nearly took over the starting role. He could have won it flat-out with a good performance in the Virginia game, but wasn't able to put anything together. He sticks as the backup this year.

#13, Taylor Bennett - Fr-RS

OV SP ST AW AG AC CA BT TP TA
59 56 48 44 56 56 48 40 82 80
Bennet developed nicely for his redshirt season. He'll see some time in blowout situations, and has a nice enough arm to be a good third option at the moment.

2005 Roster: Running Backs - Grade B

#45, P.J. Daniels - Sr-RS
5'10", 210 lbs
Pre-season First Team All-American
238-1497 rushing for 15 TDs

1 tackle
OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA BT SA
92 88 82 88 86 89 68 89 94 89
P.J. has a good year all around - just short of 1500 yards. He was the workhouse, and will be again this season. The NCAA is recognizing this - he's a first-team All-American, and is on some Heisman watch lists.

#3, Rashaun Grant - So-RS
5'10", 185 lbs
94-644 rushing for 4 TD
10-9 receiving for 1 TD

OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA BT SA
85 92 59 70 92 94 68 84 82 89
Rashaun Grant had a very nice season as the number two back in our offense. He has one more year of that before most likely stepping into the starting role. We're very confident in Rashaun in any situation at this point. The best speed of our halfback corps.

#24, Chris Woods - Sr
5'10", 190 lbs
17-98 rushing for 5 TD
2 tackles
OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA BT SA
80 86 65 74 85 85 68 78 80 88
Chris Woods did a very good job as our third back last season, although the action he saw was mostly in blowout situations. He put some big touchdown numbers up, but the key for Woods is that he's the only remaining running back who hasn't used his redshirt year. As a senior, he's not going to see much if any time behind Daniels and Grant - we're going to redshirt Woods this season and let him be the #2 back behind Rashaun Grant next year.

#38, Michael Sampson - Jr-RS

84 85 56 62 84 68 68 70 56 62 86
"Ace" was our fullback out of the Wishbone last season, and didn't see much time - but he had a very good offseason in a year that we needed him to, and he'll be our top fullback this season. Ace is a much better runner than blocker, though - although his speed into the block will help him stay in front of Daniels and Grant. We may even use him as a tailback in one of our two-back sets to give P.J. and Rashaun a rest.

#48 Brad Sherman - Fr

Sherman was a great pickup in recruiting - he's got definite potential, and will be our starting fullback next season when Eziemefe graduates. Meanwhile, he'll get some playing time this year, mostly on special teams.

Calvin Johnson emphatically fulfilled his promise last season as a true freshman, earning recognition as a Freshman All-American, and getting tabbed as a Preseason All-American this year. It will be a harder row to hoe this season, as CJ moves up into the number one receiver spot, and will draw tougher coverage assignments - but with nearly a double opposite him, he will lead what is suddenly a very good receiving corps.

#83 Clinton Jones - Fr
6'5", 208 lbs
OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA JM BT SA
80 94 56 62 86 92 84 56 90 56 82
Clinton Jones was a last-minute recruit last season, moving onto our radar late - we didn't sign him, but he came on as a walkon and was extremely excited to get onto campus. He is nearly a carbon copy of Calvin Johnson last season, and if we get similar results we'll be ecstatic. The two CJs - Jones and Johnson - should be a receiving tandem for a good while.

#8, Damarius Bilbo - Sr-RS
6'3", 225 lbs
12-143 receiving for 1 TD

76 85 56 76 86 87 76 59 85 62 96
D-bo did a nice job as a fourth receiver last year, and will be moving into the slot this year. While we focused on two-back and tight-end sets last season, looking at all four of our top receivers sitting on at least 6'3" and 200 lbs, we'll be seeing plenty of multi-wideout sets. Bilbo is set for a solid senior season.

#81, Xavier McGuire - Jr-RS

Xavier McGuire will see more time as our four-slot this season than Bilbo did last year - we'll be running at least two and possibly three four-wide sets with the size we have.

#88, Chris Dunlap - So-RS

OV SP ST AW AG AC CT CA JM BT SA

This is the other reason we'll see a ton of multi-wide sets - our tight ends are not good. Cooper will pop up in a few formations, but we won't see either of our TEs all that much.

Brad Honeycutt did a surprisingly good job last season while runblocking - hence the preseason All-American call. I don't expect him to fulfill that during the year - while we will run to the right side a good bit, we may not be quite as emphatic on that with the loss of our two solid tackles.

For such a talented defensive end, Henderson didn't have much of an impact last season. His 25 tackles were a good number, but no sacks from EH. He came back this year with something to prove, and we'll be counting on him to anchor the line.

We were looking for a big offseason stride by Richard, but he didn't improve as much as we had hoped - he was solid on the line, and will continue there, but will rotate out a bit more as Omar Billy took a few steps forward as well.

OV SP ST AW AG AC TK SA

Omar Billy had a pretty good offseason, improving to the point that he's earned a regular spot in the rotation on the line. He, Richard, and Wrotto will each spend a good bit of time.

Newberry still has the size we liked him for at the start of last season, but he didn't have much in the way of production in the 4-3. He's going to fall back in the rotation, we won't see him as often this year. Next season he should move up after Billy's graduation.

Wilkinson did a solid job for us on the outside. We need him to step up a bit more to make more tackles on the edge - we relied on our cornerbacks to make far too many tackles near the line.

Hall did a reasonable job for us when he did get in at outside backer last season. He'll stay in the nominal LOLB spot, although that won't get a lot of use - really just in the 4-3, and we'll be using a good bit of 4-2-5.

I love Robertson's tools, and hope he can step up into Wilkinson's vacated spot next season. This year he'll see time in the 4-4 defense on the outside - Wilkinson will move in to the second MLB spot - and on special teams.

J.J. Nelson was a huge surprise - a JUCO recruit who comes in and absolutely blows us away with his speed. One of - and possibly the - fastest players in college football, Nelson will be returning kicks for us, and possibly punts as well. His pure speed will get him opposite Houston as a starting corner, keeping I-Perfection Harris back in the Nickel position.

Our playbook this season consists of:
Ace - Spread (4 WR, RB)
Ace - Bunch (4 WR, RB)
Ace - Empty (5 WR)
I-Form - Slot (3 WR, RB, FB)
Strong - Slot (3 WR, RB, FB)
Weak - Slot (3 WR, RB, FB)
Shotgun - Spread (4 WR, RB)
Shotgun - Bunch (3 WR, TE, RB)
Flexbone - Normal (2 WR, 2 RB, FB)

A definite change to the play style with our lack of TE depth, and our deep squad of receivers. P.J. and Rashaun will both see plenty of playing time, as will both of our fullbacks. The biggest substitution package here is in the Flexbone, as we'll see P.J. in the fullback position, and the two CJs moving into the Flex (RB) positions.
