Does anyone off the top of their heads know why guys like Larry Fitzgerald, Roy Williams, and Reggie Williams all chose the number 11 eventhough they are all wide receivers?

They changed the rules to allow 11-19 for WR, call it the Keyshawn rule. They all wore 1 in college so 11 is logical.

Thanks for your input, I never really thought about it that way.

they did not change the rules, those have always been eligible numbers.

A big reason is more likely that buy the time Fitzgerald signed, there were already 10 WR's under contract (for training camp) having all taken the 80's numbers up. This is the specific reason Keyshawn got #19 - there simply were no remaining 80's left on the Jets by the time he signed. When the jersey started selling well, he opted not to change it.

if I understand correctly, they are eliglible for 11-19 ONLY if all the 80s are taken. I think this is what you are saying too, but it wasn't 100% clear.

What was it like to see
The face of your own stability
Suddenly look away
Leaving you with the dead and hopeless?

Eleven and she was gone.
Eleven is when we waved good-bye.
Eleven is standing still,
Waiting for me to free him
By coming home.

Moving me with a sound.
Opening me within a gesture.
Drawing me down and in,
Showing me where it all began,
Eleven.

Jenkins is wearing 12. I think Campbell in Minnesota sports 17? or 16? Anyways, I thought it was just you can have 10-19 if 80-89 are taken.

Troy Edwards has 16, at least I thought he did.

The rules have been changed. The numbers 80-89 do not all need to be taken before 10-19 can be used by receivers.

"Any time a punt/kick returner signals for a fair catch, the ball will automatically be ruled dead unless it touches one of the players from the kicking team. Previously, any player besides the one who called for the fair catch was free to advance a kick once it hit the ground. Reason for the change: Will force the receiving team to completely surrender its right to advance a kick once a fair catch signal is made. Prevents the receiving team from gaining an advantage by signaling for a fair catch, freezing the kicking team, letting the ball bounce, and then advancing. "

Do I read that right, that the ball is dead and downed as soon as it touches the ground after a fair catch signal? If so, who wants to bet that at some point this year a returner will do the ol' "signal fair catch, let it sail over your head and bounce into the end zone" play and end up accidentally downing it at the one?

I thought so at first too, but I think it still needs to be touched before it goes dead.

No, I believe that the ball will be declared dead as soon as a player from the receiving team touches it, given that he or one of his teammates has signalled for a fair catch.

so what if it hits the guy in the helmet? in the past, this was a fumble, right?

Ah, perhaps the receiving team would need to take possession of the ball in order for the ball to be declared dead.

Yeah, I think that the rule means that even if the ball bounces on the ground, a team calling fair catch can't advance the ball after taking possession.

I believe it is to avoid any Lion QB from wearing 11 again. I like it!

Now if we can only get DE's & CB's wearing #81...

Kelley Campbell wears 16 being as an undrafted free agent rookie all the 80's were gone when he was signed, in part because Minnesota has retired 80 (Cris Carter) and 88 (Alan Page), and kept the number after making the team (not sure if there were any open 80's even after cuts were made).

As far as Moss, he wore 18 in the preseason until Tony Bland who had been 84 was cut. Video games had him wearing 18 for his rookie season though.

I believe the rule was changed to prevent that play a few years ago where the ball went into the endzone, the kicking team did not down it, but thought it was dead, and basically began walking off the field. Then, the non-returner on the return team picked it up after like 10 seconds and ran all the way for a touchdown virtually untouched and unnoticed. Can't remember what game that was.
