Pssst: At an informal workout the other day at Target Center, after Timberwolves rookie Rick Rickert made a nifty move to slip past his boyhood idol, Kevin Garnett of the Wolves, to score a basket, Garnett responded, without warning, by punching Rickert in the jaw.

A cut required seven stitches to close, and Rickert also suffered a chipped tooth. The astonished 6-10 Rickert didn't retaliate against the 7-foot NBA most valuable player, who also had unkind words for the former Gophers player. Apparently, the rookie wasn't supposed to score on the MVP. Rickert received his stitches at University of Minnesota Hospital.

Because the incident involved the Wolves' franchise player, the incident seemingly will make it even more difficult for Rickert to make the Wolves' final roster.

If its true, thats pretty classless, no matter how big of a tool Rickert is.

I wonder if Garnett is still his idol? Maybe he grabbed his grapes or something.

Wow....first Wally, then Rickert.....hrmmm, is there a pattern developing here?

Don't worry, Rickert will one day be a 1,500 yard rusher for the Carolina Panthers.

If this is true, I just lost what little respect I had for Garnett.

I wouldn't trust anything written by Charley Walters.

Definitely wait until you get the whole story on this. It pretty much goes against everything I've heard about the personalities of both players.

And why on earth would you not respect Garnett? As far as athletes goes, I can't think of many with less baggage than he.

Has anyone ever deemed you important enough so as to interview you? No? That's okay it doesn't really matter.

Maybe you've just said something that is stupid or out of cue? Probably.

Are you president of the KG fan club?

When someone's a jackass, they're a jackass. You can twist and turn it all you want, but when you have past history backing shit up your, "the media is evil" argument doesn't float.

Winslow does this and this would be a 6 page thread talking about how he's the 2nd coming of satan. Garnett does it and people don't believe it. The uzi reference has proven it.

Replace KG with Kobe and you have ESPN's top story of the night.

Wait a minute, this is just a friendly gesture from Garnett. He's merely offering his friendship to Rickert, and treating him like he treats all his friends...like Anthony Peeler. Remember when these two "friends" duked it out in the playoffs this past season?

If its true

Well, 'Shooter' reported it yesterday, and I've yet to see it from the legitimate news source, so at this point I'd say it's looking more like it's false.

Garnett punches player
during pickup game
Attack by NBA MVP
reportedly is unprovoked
Kevin Garnett punched former University of Minnesota player Rick Rickert during a pickup basketball game.

NBA most valuable player Kevin Garnett punched a former University of Minnesota player during a pickup game last week at Target Center, cutting the man's face and chipping his tooth.

Garnett punched Rick Rickert, a second-round draft pick of the Timberwolves last season, according to several sources with knowledge of the event. Seven stitches were required to close the cut on Rickert's chin, said Susan Rickert, the player's mother, during a phone interview yesterday.

Garnett's agent and a Timberwolves spokesman declined to comment.

According to a report in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Garnett's attack was unprovoked.

Rickert, 21, scored several times with the 6-foot-11 Garnett guarding him. Several other players began to "tease" Garnett about being outplayed, according to a source. When Rickert scored again, Garnett struck him without warning.

"Rick was surprised that Garnett reacted the way he did," said Rickert's agent, Mark Termini.

In November 2000, Garnett punched teammate Wally Szczerbiak in the head following an argument.

The moral of the story...don't tease Mr. Garnett. He's a little baby...

Tho the Post is barely legit, the fact that they published it, even quoting a report from a rag newspaper, lends to the fact that the story is legitimate, at least to some degree. Also this article has quotes from RR's agent that the other did not.

Story: Legit
Details: Sketchy

Over the years I've learned that although it can be an interesting read at times, Walters collumns can't exactly be trusted for accuracy, unless it's something I read on Viking Update the night before.

Meaning the whole "Garnett responded, without warning, by punching Rickert in the jaw." is very questionable.

Clearly, sovereignstar is a conspiracy theorist...the FOFC equivalent of Oliver Stone. He apparently believes there was a "second puncher" and that Garnett is the fall guy.

stevew

Okay, say that RR was just pwning Garnett, and talking all manner of shit to him. There still is no reason for Garnett to punch him in the mouth. KG should have just left. I hope RR sues the hell out of him.

Good thing Garnett declined to go to the Olympics...guess he figured why travel all the way to Greece to get shown up when he could do it in the comfort of his own city. With KG and Spree on the same team maybe Flip should invest in a bodyguard or two for himself.

Rickert has always been a baby. Should have been punched long ago. Hell the story can't be true, because it infers Rickert might have been taking part in an offseason training program. Lord knows that isn't true.
