I'm heading this weekend to Dragoncon. (www.dragoncon.org) This will be my first time at a Sci-fi convention in 12 years, and the first time I'm spending more than day at one since I used to work as volunteer security for coventions 13+ years ago. I'm really psyched about it. It is going to be a cool 4 day escape from the real world.
Anybody else go/have gone to conventions? Anyone else going to this one this weekend?

Could be worse, rather than an attendee, you could be one of the organizers...
Looks like I am going to be helping to run games at Shadowcon in Memphis later this year.

It is about twice the size it used to be. There are many more things going on than used to be. Are you going this year?

Ah yes..zoobas. Sweatpants with even less material to them. Tight on the thighs, tight on the crouch. And say hello to neon colors...

Trekkies Around The World
LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash) -- "Star Trek" fans are spacey no matter what part of the world they live in -- but that doesn't mean there aren't regional differences.
According to filmmaker Roger Nygard, director of a new documentary, "Trekkies 2," the show's fans do things differently depending on which country they're from.
He says French trekkies are very secretive about their sci-fi passions because, he admits, "the culture looks down on television in general."
However, Germans consider being a trekkie "almost cool because it's a country of mechanical engineers." Plus, German women are more open to being trekkies than the ladies in other countries.
Meanwhile, Italian trekkies are the most communal -- whole conventions stop at lunch and dinner so that Vulcans, Klingons and Romulans can dine together.
Finally, Nygard says Brazil has the most "ethnically diverse" group of trekkies and women participants favor skimpy outfits like the ones worn by the alien babes who make out with Captain Kirk on the 1960s edition of the show.
"Trekkies 2" just came out on DVD and Nygard is already planning a sequel focusing on trekkies in Asia and Africa.

I've been going to gaming conventions since I was 9 or 10 years old. Used to to comic and sci-fi conventions. Then moved onto Dallascon, a local gaming convention during my Dallas years. I have been to GenCon 7 out of the last 9 years (missed this year). The last few years I have helped run a Call of Chthulu tournament, so I have become an acutal staffer. Oh yeah....

Jedi Academy opens in Romania
Bucharest - A Star Wars acedemy that teaches about the religion of the Jedi, use of the light sabre and speaking in Wookiee has opened its doors in Romania.
Adrian Pavel, who runs the country's Star Wars Club, decided to found the Jedi Academy after getting so many questions from fellow fans on how they can be more like their heroes in the Star Wars films.
He told local daily Libertatea: "We have meetings and lectures, and we dress like Jedis, but this is no longer enough. We'll soon learn how to handle the light sabres in academy classes.
"The academy is open to everybody. There is a quiz with 100 questions that will cover even the darkest aspects of the Star Wars phenomenon that needs to be done in 24 hours. Anyone who passes quiz will have a place in the Jedi Academy."
The academy is also offering special modules for true devotees, like cooking some of the dishes seen in the Star Wars films including Wookiee Cookies, Princess Leia Danish donughts, Sand Trooper sandwiches and Twin Sun toasts. -- Ananova News

wow, way to wheel out those national stereotypes, who could ever argue with the thought of the French looking down their noses whilst the Germans are all methodical types. At least we Brits were spared...

Is Dragon*Con the one with the organizer I saw in the AJC/Creative Loafing who was put in jail for solicitation of minors or something? Something about him allegedly molesting boys? I remember the charges were shady because they were pushed by one of his competitors or former partners or something and he got rung by system. He got beaten in jail or something and has brain damage from it, and is also on house arrest. Not sure the full story, but from the articles, these conventions...and what goes on behind the scenes...is pretty weird.

I just got back from oicking up the tickets. I met Marggot Kidder, Lorenzo Lamas and Ray Parks at the hotel which was pretty cool. I also found out they're going to have midget wrestling on Friday, so expect Fritz to show up tommorow. :)
The freek to normal person ratio is wider than it even used to be. I love it. We just laughed the whole time we were there.

3, in very bad costumes. As a matter of fact, one was in a PVC suit that didn't completely cover him and he had no shirt underneath! I couldn't tell were the plastic ended and the white fat flesh began. *shiver*

I'm incredibly envious, GD. If I'm not mistaken, John Ringo is going to be at that convention. He's one of my favourite science-fiction author at the moment, having came out of Baen's Bar (Baen's online message board).
