Probably. I'm predicting that they lose 34-20, but I'm hoping for a pleasant surprise.

I'm already all decked out in orange and blue in preparatino for tonight. It's gonna be a fun game to watch... :)

If I was ASU I'd be very wary of this match-up...

I'm not going to be able to see the game, seeing as how I'm in N. Cal... I'm gonna have to follow it online or try to catch it on the radio.

I think Price is going to do good things for UTEP... but not right away. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Devils are gonna be the surprise breakout team in the Pac-10 this year... I think they have a shot at finishing 2nd or 3rd in the conference.

Is the game on TV?

I think the key to the game is UTEP's o-line. It's been pretty bad during camp, but if they can keep the pass rush off of Jordan Palmer then the Miners have a shot to win...

If anyone is interested in watching the game it's going to be shown on Fox Sports Arizona. Supposedly it's going to be aired in the LA area, so MrBug might get a preview of the Miners he'll be watching next year if he wants to...

Yeah, Fox Sports Arizona, which I could get if I bought some expanded programming on my DirecTV dish...

I'll cheer for UTEP once....after they announce the final score :) . It should be a good game (have season tickets with my wife to ASU as we both are grads).

I also think Price will get UTEP going in the right direction and soon, just not tonight. ASU 45 UTEP 13

There should be a pretty decent contingentof Miner fans there tonight, including a bunch of UTEP students. The Miners are getting a couple of busses together and are taking the kids out there then taking home right after the game. If you run into a young punk name Gibbi who's wearing a UTEP hardhat be sure to tell him that JeeberD says hi... :)

Here's hoping for a good, injury free game...

I believe it.

Back in the day, when I was living in AZ and the Cardinals were in the NFC East, the largest regular contingent of Redskins fans that would show up for the annual game at Sun Devil Stadium was the El Paso Redskins Fan Club. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the same guys were going to the Miners game.

</td></tr></tbody></table> TEMPE, Ariz. -- Thursday was the start of the Mike Price era, and it wasn't much different than opening games of a bleak UTEP past.

Arizona State took advantage of early UTEP miscues -- specifically three first-half interceptions by sophomore quarterback Jordan Palmer -- and played smart, efficient football the rest of the way to hammer the Miners 41-9 at Sun Devil Stadium.

It also was an offensive display by the Arizona State offense, led by senior quarterback Andrew Walter. Whether it was long, time-consuming drives or quick hits, Walter was a master under center and showed why he is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. He played through the end of the third quarter and finished 18 of 37 for 241 yards and three touchdowns.

UTEP got a taste of Walter's prowess right from the beginning. On the Sun Devils' opening possession, Walter engineered a 14- play, 72-yard drive that took up five minutes and ended on a Jesse Ainsworth 22-yard field goal.

From there, the Miners played well, holding the Sun Devils off for another two drives with a scrappy defense that included big hits and an improved scheme. But it was just a matter of time before Arizona State and Walter revved up their engine.

Walter went to work again, hitting junior receiver Matt Miller on an 18-yard strike. A play later, sophomore Terry Richardson caught a perfect Walter pass for its first touchdown to make the score 10-0.

At that point, the game still was up for grabs and UTEP still was within striking distance of an upset.

Then the season opener of 2004 took the look of the season opener of 2003 -- and all of 2003.

Twice Palmer was intercepted by senior safety Emmanuel Franklln. After the first one, Franklin rambled 38 yards to the Miner 30-yard line. It led to a Walter-to-Brent Miller touchdown that made the score 17-0.

Franklin came up big again on the very next UTEP drive, as Palmer, who finished with four interceptions, forced another pass after being heavily pressured by the Sun Devil defense. This time, Franklin scored on a 38-yard ramble to paydirt. Arizona State led 24-0 early in the second quarter.

The third Palmer pick also came in the second quarter -- and wasn't only Palmer's fault. His pass was deflected, and intercepted by Quency Darley, a defensive lineman.

Palmer's numbers at the end of the third quarter: 17-of-32 for 145 yards.

Arizona State, however, did not score on the ensuing drive.

UTEP made an offensive peep in the second quarter, as Palmer came right back on a 37-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins. But the good feelings quickly dissipated when sophomore kicker Reagan Schneider missed the extra point, making the score 24-6.

From there it was the Walter and Derek Hagan show. Hagan, the junior receiver for Arizona State, made life miserable for the UTEP secondary. He finished with 119 yards on eight receptions with a score.

The good news is that UTEP never quit -- something that seemed to happen time and again last year. The offense kept throwing, kept trying. The defense never stopped hitting. The special teams continued to do as good as it could do.

Simply, the Miners were faced with a pretty decent Pac-10 team in the first game of the Mike Price era.

Stats at the end of the third quarter: tailback Howard Jackson, 16-58, TD; Marcus Thomas, 2-19; receiver Chris Marrow, five catches, 33 yards; punter Bryce Benekos, seven punts for an average of 45.7 yards.

GAME BREAKDOWN

Following are the key plays by quarter in UTEP's season opener against the Arizona State Sun Devils:

The score might not indicate it, but the Miners didn't play that badly. First things first, they never gave up. That was a trademark during the Gary Nord era, and I was very pleased to see the players going full throttle all game long. Secondly, tackling was a lot better than it has been in the past. Linebackers and d-linemen were actually wrapping up the ASU backs and receivers, something that has been missing in El Paso for a long time. Third, the o-line actually played a really good game. They only gave up two sacks, and that was late in the game. After hearing about how bad they were during camp it was very nice to see them giving Palmer time to throw (if only he had done something with that time). Finally, the secondary was MUCH improved over least years team. We may have given up over 300 yards in the air, but last years team would have given up probably 400+. The corners were actually looking for the ball when it was in the air, not just running with the receiver, and the safties were hitting hard. We held a QB who is supposed to be one of the tops in the nation to below a 50% completion percentage...

Of course, there were a number of bad points as well. Jordan Palmer has a LOT to learn. He has little touch on his long ball and was throwing into double coverage all night long. Of course, he only played QB one year in high school and half of last season for the Miners, so he doesn't have much experience yet. I was happy that Price stuck with him instead of yanking him like Nord would have done, though. Palmer can only get better through experience.

ASU certainly had better size and talent. There's no use arguing that point...

Overall, I wasn't too disappointed in the game. The players attitude was great and I saw improvement in problem areas. Once Price has another year or two to get his players in here the Miners will be in good shape.

Oh, and I'm sticking with my preseason prediction of the Miners going 4-7. Baby steps, people. Baby steps... :)

Well, I didn't see the game, but the analysis I read basically said that the Sun Devils could have played a lot better, too.

I think Andrew Walter is gonna have a great season, and hopefully this game will serve as a good tune-up for the offense.

UTEP will get better give them time. Palmer is a good QB who just needs this year under his belt to improve. He just needs to ease up on a couple of his throws or needs a faster WR to get to them, both will come in time. Price did a ton of shot gun and that helped the UTEP OL give protection and the zone and stacking 7 men in the box helped their D too. Keep you heads up UTEP fans Price is a good coach who will have that team turned around in no time and many teams won't want to play them like Fresno.
