I gave notice that I was resigning from my job at my law firm today. I've accepted a position within the legal department of a company in Santa Monica (my offices will overlook the ocean). Better still, no more billable hours or time keeping and I get to have a regular 9-5 workday. And a couple of weeks off before starting the new gig. Oh yeah!

Just got more good news!!!

My older sister at my mom's house and her husband have been trying to adopt for a while now. They got a call today that a mother had just given birth and they've been selected. The birth mother has until Friday to change her mind, so we have to be cautiously optimistic until then, but it appears that I am an uncle for the first time!

I am happy for you. I face a similar decision. Actually, I have made it, but only the timing is up in the air. How did you get the corporate gig? Did you fall into it, hunt it down, or did they come looking for you?

I am mulling my options at that is one of them.

I sort of fell into it. I got a call back in June from a woman who had previously left our firm for the same company. She told me they were hiring again and that she thought I should apply. I went through their regular interview process after that.

I wasn't really looking before hand (but I was keeping my eyes and ears open). The decision was tougher than I thought it would be, but I haven't had any second thoughts since making it.

I am terrible about keeping up with my time sheets. Usually it is a mad scramble through my sent e-mails at the end of the month to piece missing days back together. Inevitably, I lose time. That is the one thing I will absolutely not miss about being at a firm.

Ands yes, billable time does suck. Funny thing is, about 6 months after I left my state job for private practice, the state agency I worked for instituted billable hours. So, they get the worst of private practice, for state pay. And to add insult to injury, my firm was hired by my former state agency to work on a receivership case. So, I get paid to work at a private firm, I do billable hours just like the state's lawyers, and I'm charging them my hourly rate (well, a little less than standard, but still...). Now, if I could just have state vacation time, I'd be all set!

I've considered leaving for an insurance company gig, but I don't think I could ever come close to matching the money - both now (plus bonus) and especially future potential earnings.
