View Full Version : How many players could realisticaly be in a multiplayer league?

Obviously, this question gets to TCY multi-player (though I think that it will be a political sim)?
TCY is a game, as someone noted, that runs only in stages. There is no need for "offline" stuff like the FOF draft. Accordingly, if stage exporting was done in an automated fashion, I suppose that a game could, as a technical matter, run with 100+ people in it.
Still--it seems like way too much of a headache to ever get involved in that for reasons which seem pretty obvious.
So, what do you think is the outer limits--for any reason--of the amount of people that could be in a multiplayer league before it just stopped being fun?

I think the key here is that in order to do this the method for sending in exports would have to be different than in FOF. I think it is unreasonable to manage 100+ files as a commisioner in this fashion. I think there would need to be (should be) some sort of "server" that you upload straight into, rather than someone having to manage files. Whether this is a stand alone app or a web app I do not think matters, but I think managing files would be quite difficult.

Seeing how VPI runs our league, it probably wouldn't be too unreasonable for a 117+ team league to run like that.

I agree as a technical matter.
And I can even see having a league policy of being harsher when sticking to the schedule and it just sucks to be you when you miss an export (because that will probably happen to at least a few people each stage).
However, I think that it would be tough to patrol cheaters / anti-competitive players in such a large league. In a 32 player league, no one can really slip under the radar for too long with their transactions. With 100+ people to monitor, it would be difficult to see if someone was exploiting a game bug.
Any decisions would have to be made by a small executive body. Large decisions would have to be put to votes--but I think that those votes would be more in the nature of pure ballots than in the style of the (for lack of a better term) community meetings that we have with ~30 people in FOF leagues.
And owners would be coming into and going out of the league at about 3X the rate of FOF leagues--leading to more disruption.
And it only takes one bad apple to ruin everyone's fun. The odds of that apple appearing are pretty good over the course of 100+ players.
I just see a lot of problems--none of which are insurmountable (sp?)--but any of which may make multiplayer TCY a beast.

The Conference Heads would have to shoulder a good bit of responsibility.
Although with TCY there is a good bit less to worry about that FOF - no trades to review, no FA signings, etc. Basically, we'd be looking at recruiting - and recruiting violations are pretty common to begin with. ;-D

This would never work with f'in elitists. The amount of votes taken would cause the earth to reverse it's rotation, taking us back in time where dinosaurs would eat us all.
No, this would never work. :D

A lot of the non-technical stuff are problems you see when you look at any sort of college multiplayer game.
Look at FBCB, some guys want to play small schools/small conferences, some want to play the big boys, it's impossible to agree on a single ocnfrence or two to get everyone involved(I left the nearly full pac-10 for the nearly-empty ACC, and enjoy it more there b/c it's my teams). If you only have 20 people or so in a college league when it first starts up, you may only play 4 or 5 games out of 30 against other human teams, it's very difficult to get fully immersed and really get a league going.

Agreed on this. If the league is sparsely populated it would not run well. A commish would perhaps have to push for one conf to be full before another one opens up for sign-ups?

I think TCY multiplayer could work, but more in the mode of a MMOG than the way FOF currently does it.

well, Hattrick now has more than 100,000 people playing, so my guess would be unlimited, with dedicated server space...

This is by far one of the most enjoyable things I've ever found whilst doing a web search. Googling 'front office football demo' brought me this good fortune.
