View Full Version : Chris Rix / FSU Game

I attended my first football game in about 7 years today, the FSU/Clemson game. Despite trying hard to give the game away (something like 300 yards on returns and 2TDs for one guy, a botched pooch kick which was fair caught at the 40 plus another 15 yards for hitting the guy, then a blocked punt for a safety), FSU won, pulling away in the 4th for a less-than-comfortable 41-22 win (it was 24-22 midway through the 3rd).

The real news, though, was the fact that Chris Rix came out in the 1st with a legit ankle sprain, but never came back in even though he was cleared to. Wyatt Sexton led the team for the rest of the game and did pretty well. Sure, Clemson's D is not Miami's, but it ain't UAB's either. He led one drive against UAB, then played virtually mistake-free ball for 3+ quarters today. He was accurate, he made good decisions (one in particular, when he purposely overthrew an out pattern on a route the corner jumped and would have intecepted for a TD), and he hit on a beautiful 47 yard TD pass. ANd he ran the offense without looking like a deer caught in headlights.

In other words, he wasn't Chris Rix.

So, I think we might have seen the end of the Chris Rix era at FSU, barring an injury or complete meltdown in the coming weeks. The crowd was merciless toward Rix, and when Sexton came in, the noise was deafening, eventually turning into a Wyatt! Wyatt! chant.

The catcalls for Rix were secondary to the venom directed at Jeff Bowden the offensive coordinator. The guy plain sucks. In a 3 drive span, he called the same run-run-3rd down screen pass 3 or 4 times. We were all joking about it in the stands, then it turned to anger.

Worst part? How about 17-14 FSU leading, Clemson has just scored a TD, there's 1:45 left in the 1st half, and FSU has the ball on its own 25. Instead of trying to at least get into field goal position, they just run the ball 5 or 6 times to kill the clock. On the first run, Clemson immediately called time out. Luckily, we got 2 first downs to make the point moot, but we all came to the realization that on that drive, we were Clemson playing on the road, and Clemson was FSU at home. They had the confidence that we wouldn't score (or attempt to score) with less than 2 minutes to go in the half, that they could stop us, and that they hoped to get the ball back. It didn't happen -luckily - but at that moment, we collectively realized that Jeff Bowden was Tommy's bitch. Not a good feeling, considering we're FSU at home and they're Clemson on the road. Dude needs to be fired by Dad (and/or Dad needs to retire, since he probably agreed with the play calling). End of story.

Oh, and Lorenzo Booker has got IT. Some of his moves were frighteningly good. Leon Washington, the back he splits time with, had a nice 3 broken tackle TD run, but he's not a great RB - can't find the holes most of the time. Booker doesn't need holes, he can turn ordinary running plays into jukefests that look like punt returns.

As for the game experience itself, I'm no fan of in-person football games, but today was pretty cool. Sat in the endzone, but on the alumni (read: non-sun) side, and thanks to the Jeanne system, we had a nice breeze that kep the temps in the mid 80's. Still would rather sit on my couch and flip between 4 games at once, though.

The last game for Chris Rix was a great day for FSU, and a sad day for FSU bashers. :)

Bobby was non-commital about a controversy, saying that only he would start the controversy, if there was going to be one, after reviewing the game film.

I think we play NC next. Since we know that Rix can play well against lesser teams, there's realy no reason to start him. Sexton should start, because that's the kind of team he can gain some confidence against. And it's a home game.

Here's how badly we want the Rix era to end - I would be willing to take 2 or 3 more losses this year to develop Sexton, even though Rix probably gives us our best chance to run the table this year, and I think most fans feel the same way. We all know he will screw something up, though, so better to put those losses to use for the future, than play out this guy's unfulfilled talent. We should have just given him an honorary degree at the end of last year and offered him a one-way plane ticket back to Cali.

A few comments...

-Chris Rix if healthy may start Bowden isn't make him lose his job to injury.
-Wyatt Sexton is a baller period he hasnt played as much as Rix and he is already equal to Rix.
-Jeff Bowden wasn't the one who said try to run out the call it was Bobby. Much of the bad plays all come from Bobby I dont know if you noticed but when Bobby gets on the headsets the next play is usually a bad one.
-Lorenzo Booker is a bonafide stud I had a huge disagree with the Seminole fans on warchant about if Booker will make the NFL.
- Leon Washington is a better back then Lorenzo simply because he is the total package. That Clemson game didnt do him justice he is a stud.
- The offensive line is very overrated.
- Defense is pure nasty.
- We can run the table with Wyatt at the helm.
Go Noles.

That made it painfully obvious. Sexton's the better quarterback for this Florida State team.

1. The defense is mean, nasty, and likes to try to outscore the opposition.

2. We have 3 great running backs who need to see the ball in some form 50-60% of the time (Willie Reid needs more touches, either as a slot reciever or whatever.)

3. These two facts tell me this- The QB needs to make the easy throws, occasionally throw the ball deep like on the bomb to Stovall for the TD when the safeties start creeping up and the corners are jumping the short stuff. And he needs to make smart decisions, and not turn the ball over. Wyatt Sexton fits that job description better then Chris Rix. Rix is feast or famine. You'll get Charlie Ward, then you'll get the NFL version of Ryan Leaf. We don't really *need* a Ward this season. All we need is a Thad Busby. I think Sexton can do that much.

And was it just me, or did Jeff Bowden actually make a couple of halftime adjustments? The offense was putrid in the first half, and well, almost looked decent in the second half. I was only listening online so I don't know if it was new plays or just better execution.

Bowden: Rix out at least two weeks
<HR width="100%" noShade SIZE=1>

Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Three decades after his dad quarterbacked Florida State, sophomore Wyatt Sexton will make his first start for the Seminoles (No. 11 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) when they play host to North Carolina on Saturday.

Sexton, a lanky redshirt sophomore from Tallahassee, replaces Chris Rix, who suffered a sprained right ankle in Saturday's victory over Clemson. Sexton entered the game late in the first quarter with Florida State trailing 7-3 and turned in a near-flawless performance to lead a 41-22 victory.

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said Rix will be out at least two weeks. X-rays were negative Saturday; Rix hobbled back to the sidelines before halftime.

Ok, everybody put on your little tin-foil hats a second....

Is this a honest injury benching, or is this a save-face benching?

I think Rix could win the winnable games for the rest of the year, so I don't view this as a benching because he's not as good as Sexton. I think the team has finally come to terms with the fact that Rix doesn't give the team any of the advantages that starting a 4th year starting, senior QB should give the team, and that it's pointless to let him stay as QB when his replacement can (a) win and lose the same games that Rix could win and lose, and (b) gain valuable experience for next year.

I'm sure the injury is partly an excuse. He was warming up during the 2nd quarter (or maybe it was the 3rd, I don't remember), so he obviously felt like he could come back in. Then again, maybe he was pushing himself because he saw the writing on the wall and needed to try anything to get back in before Sexton took over for good.

Either way, I'm happy that Sexton is playing. As long as he doesn't have a complete meltdown, I hope they stick with him. It's nice to know we have a semi-capable backup, though. :D
