View Full Version : I'm Officially, At Least Temporarily, Unemployed. Again.

Whelp. It was bound to happen, and it finally did. Sort of.

Company From Hell has a bunch of proposals out, some of which actually seem like they'll go through. Until they do go through, however, I'm officially, as of right now, unemployed. If they get the jobs, I'm back. If not, I'm done.

Either way, I've gone from wanting a new job badly to absolutely needing a new job.

Shit. Fuck. Damn. Hell.

You should write before all of your curse words "hxxp://"

Web development (mostly PHP/mySQL, some ASP/VB/MSSQL, old school Perl fanatic, etc, etc), some Director apps, passable linux system administrator in a pinch. Traditionally I wind up being the programmer who gets stuck doing all the server work too.

Where is anywhere that's hiring (in the US), quite frankly. I have no ties to this joint, and don't wanna stay in this town anyway. Flying out pretty much anywhere for a serious interview is zero issue for me. (Yay for the folks offering to pony up airline tickets in that event.)

There's a dinner at person's place of choice, and a full night of booze for anyone who actually lands me a job. :)

Hang in there, CW.

And I think if you were ever to set your (former) bosses on fire, now would be the time.

Navy. Be an electronics tech. You'll go through my school house.

But you're more likely to be an IT, information technician. They do most of the computer software junk.

I hear there is a bunch of geeks who are looking for a new basebal sim.

I don't think they pay very well though.

(go Perl!)

The funny thing is, back during my last stint of joblessness, I was very, very close to joining either the Navy or the AF. My last act of desperation, so to speak.

Seriously again.

Any Microfocus COBOL or taking programs and web-enabling them?

The latter. If you recall my horror stories about the tanning salon nightmare (we basically built an app that controlled an entire tanning salon), some of that monstrosity I had to add interfaces for. I can built a lot of pretty screwy stuff on the web.

I know Jack and Shit about COBOL, however. Though I have an innate gift of being able to learn new (to me)' programming languages in about six seconds. Learned SQL in 2 days, learned PHP in about a week.

E-mail me your resume. My company (I think) is still looking for someone to help web-enable our product. The office is in KY, for what it's worth.

dola, on a more serious note...

CW, are you looking for smaller companies, consulting, large companies, contract positions?

Preferably full time work. I don't really care about size of companies.

I was in a similar situation at the start of the summer. I do PHP /MySQL/ web stuff... java stuff etc..

The company I worked for made about half the staff redundant and my number was in the lot.

Really scary thing is that my girlfriend (whom i live with) is going back to school this year to become a primary teacher, and I was studying a games programming course on day release.

I was thinking how the hxxp://fuck am I going to get a job that pays enough to cover the mortgage and lets me take a day off per week to go study games?

It was quite stressfull for a bit. I lucked out in the end and got a couple of contract jobs working from home, one of which is pretty big and pays well.

Hope you land on your feet!

CW,

I don't have anything firm, but go online and poke around the Washington Post job listings. Unemployment in Fairfax County, VA is around 1.5%, and there are a TON of tech jobs out here.

I swear, half of the jobs I'm qualified for require pre-existing security clearance. Which blows goats.

Poli

Well, if you hadn't blown goats before, you wouldn't have that problem.
