November 5, 2004 (U-WIRE) NORMAN, Okla. -- A source close to the OU football team said Thursday that star freshman running back and Heisman hopeful Adrian Peterson's eligibilty is in jeopardy because of a Web site that may be earning profits off Peterson's image.
A fan site, adrian-peterson.com, now has a disclosure on the top of the site. Before, there was nothing that showed that the site was not connected to Peterson personally.
"If a student-athlete‚s name or picture appears on commercial items or is used to promote a commercial product sold by an individual or agency without the student-athlete's knowledge or permission, the student-athlete (or university) is required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics," according to NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.2.
Peterson has not been declared ineligible yet, but the NCAA may have groundsagainst the young player.
Hmm dont let the OU gangbang hear this... would they be forced to to forfit(sp?) their games?

Maybe I'm dense, but there is nothing they are selling on that site. How exactly are they profiteering?

There isn't even a single ad banner. Is a website automatically construed as a commercial endeavor? If so, that's dumb.

How can he have stopped it if it was done without his "knowledge or permission?"

True enough. It all seems odd, though.

If so, then it seems the university took the proper steps.
Weird story.

Check it out. I get the sense that this guy is a pretty big OU fan generally.
I see him as one of those guys who gets all red faced angry and starts breathing really heavy and yelling at you if you say something like "I think that Jason White really didn't play well enough early in the year to be considered a Heisman lock at this point." Then his whole day is ruined because all he can think about is how mad at you he is.
I love guys like that, if only because they leave more ladies around for the rest of us.

Am I missing something here? If Peterson didn't personally profit from this, how can they revoke his eligibility?

Okay, there has been another story ran (too bad it's not on NewsOK.com anymore) that said lawyers from the university has issued a C&D order to the two fansite owners. One website is of Peterson and the other is of White. Because of this, Peterson and White should be able to keep his elgibility.

I had been there before he had put up the disclaimer. There were more videos and stuff, but not much has changed. He came on one of the message boards and said one of the key issues was that he LINKED to commercial sites, such as espn.com or rivals.com. Even though they weren't banner ads and they weren't making him money, they were still commercial, so he had to take them off.
Also, it had become a pretty big site for his stat tracking, videos from the games, etc. Peterson's old high school had linked to the website.
Anyway, I think it is silly and I would say that Peterson won't be ineligible.

That was my initial thought as well.
I know the guy, sorta. He's on my message board, SoonerScoop.com on the Rivals.com network, and he's not profiting off of this. The real scoop has yet to be found, although it has nothing to do with ADs eligibility.
