Wow, it looks like Cal's BCS spot isn't a lock. Texas narrowed the gap conisderably since last week. A big Texas win over the Aggies, coupled with a narrow Cal win over Southern Miss could open the door to the #4 spot for Texas. I'd love to see a Texas-Utah Fiesta Bowl. That would be a much better game than Utah-Boston College.

There is a bit of a nightmare scenario lurking for both Texas and Cal. If either of those teams lose their last game, it doesn't automatically assure the other of a BCS spot. Boise State is sitting at #7, and would almost assuredly move into the top 6 with a loss from either Cal or Texas. The rule of a non BCS conference team being guaranteed a berth if ranked in the top 6 supersedes the rule of a team in the top 4 without an automatic berth being guaranteed a spot, and there is no limit on the number of non-BCS teams eligible for the top 6 spots.

What a ridiculous scenario, that if happens, hopefully will push the college presidents to move to a Div. 1-AA style playoff, instead of this quagmire known as the BCS.

My opinion is that Boise State will not get to #6, even with a Texas or Cal loss, if Miami and Georgia beat Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.

Until college players can be fairly compensated for their services to their respective universities, I don't want to hear any of these schools crying about the BCS or how they got cheated out of more money in a more lucrative bowl game.

There's a report in the Contra Costa Times this morning that says the Rose Bowl is claiming not to be bound by the BCS selection process and that it plans to select Cal, whether regardless of whether they are in the top four or not (assuming USC is in the title game).

dola...
The article was based on comments by the Rose Bowl President. Other articles in the LA Times and the SF Chronicle contradict those comments.

Yep, and the Liberty Bowl chairman was making noise that he was going to hold Utah to the contract that sends the MWC champ to Memphis.

Yep, and the Liberty Bowl chairman was making noise that he was going to hold Utah to the contract that sends the MWC champ to Memphis.

That has been a hot topic here for the past few weeks. All the members interviews at the Liberty Bowl have said they are letting Utah out of their committment. As a matter of fact, the Liberty Bowl is salivating at the chance to get a rematch of Louisville and Memphis. Although, it does not appear likely to happen, that is their dream matchup.

On another note, what of the possibility of Louisville getting into the top 6?

I would say that Boise wouldn't get to #6 because Texas or Cal wouldn't fall behind the Broncos in the human polls, allowing Georgia and Miami to gain votes, but Boise State not being able to. Then again, I could be wrong, and I'm just guessing.

I'm also going to guess that neither Texas nor Cal loses and that Cal will go by the narrowest of margins. Quite frankly, it's too bad Boston College has to be there...Texas-Utah or Texas-Miami would be more entertaining.

They need a miracle. A Texas loss, a Miami loss, and then some wierd stuff has to happen with the computer polls.

I'm actually surprised OU gained in the BCS standings. I figured they'd pick up a couple of poll points, but that Auburn would gain in the computers.

I believe they did jump up to #2 in one of the computer polls, but it didn't help them any since that poll was thrown out.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say that I think it's stupid to throw out a team's highest and lowest ranking in the computers. If they are going to have enough faith in the computers to make them part of the national championship selection process, then go all in. With the decrease in the importance of the computer polls, I don't think this rule is necessary any more.

What is weird is that with all the millions of dollars at stake that univerisities are content to let polls and computers dicated their access to untold riches rather than settling it on the field.

Because for the Big 6 conferences, the conferences basically get the same amount of money from year to year, every once in a while they get more when they get 2 teams in.

It's all a way to keep the money in the big conferences.

Once again, Arizona State gets screwed (dropped to 16) - as if everyone forgot how ASU shellacked Iowa earlier in the season.

Franklin -

Well, ASU is 2 spots ahead of Texas in Massey's BCS ratings, if it makes you feel better. :)

Hey, hey, come on, now, shellacked is such a harsh word. ;)

Actually, what makes me laugh is Iowa is suddenly ahead of Michigan in the BCS and at least one of the human polls. Iowa's other loss was a, well, not a shellacking, but a decently thorough beating at the hands of the Wolverines.

It's not how you start, it's how you finish, I guess.

That reminds me of '93 when ND beat FSU in the next to last game of the season. ND goes out and loses to BC the next week, but FSU gets the title. I understand when you beat one team in week 1, you can't claim to be better than them at the end of the year. But when you beat a team in week 11 head to head, and lose to someone else the next week, and you have the same record, you shoud still be ahead of the other team.

It's a rip-off. ASU's two losses were on the road at Cal and USC... All their other games have been VERY convincing wins, with the exception of a close game against Stanford.

Heh. Can't have a BCS without the BC..

and the funny thing is, with BC only getting 19th ranked (only up 2-3 spots after defeating the 10th ranked team in the nation by nearly 20? BAH! No respect), this is not good for the Big East to keep their BCS Slot (if the BCS teams for a conference do not average a end of year 12th ranking over four years, the BCS can yank their spot).

So not only are BC looking like they'll go (IF they can beat Syracuse, which is always interesting), but by being a 16th ranked team if they win against Syracuse, reducing the chance that the required ranking can be held for the Big east due to BC's losses to WF and Pitt.

if texas plays michigan in the rose bowl i will piss myself

it would be a horrid game to watch, what with maybe the two worst offensive coordinators in any major conference, but what a classic matchup it would be

i won't debate that. i'd love to see the three of them talking about football. it would probably make my head explode

however, nobody is worse than davis. nobody. it took this man 20 years to put playaction into his arsenal

I have heard that Boise State vs Louisville in the Liberty bowl is basically a done deal...however, I do not know if that is still the case.

For the record, that is neither false nor an exaggeration. In Davis' 20th year of coaching, he added a play action series.

Yeah, Cal and USC pretty much took off the belt and wacked them. If you can't beat the top teams or make a challenge (Iowa I think is a step below Cal and USC), I'm not sure why you should get the respect.

Ok... but why does Iowa get more respect than ASU after the Sun Devils took off the belt and whacked them?

That's all I'm asking...

I don't know. It was early in the season, but remember, respect isn't earn on one game. Iowa was able to beat a top ten team, in Wisconsin, won its last seven games, and played I think a slightly tougher overall schedule. But that's just my two cents.

Maybe... but my point remains that Iowa's two losses (ASU and Michigan) were against lower-ranked teams than ASU's (Cal and USC), and since ASU won the head-to-head meeting in convincing fashion, ASU should be ranked as high, or higher, even if some consideration is give for Iowa's tougher schedule (not sure how much tougher, though... and they barely beat Penn State).

Yes, but you can go to the flip side and argue Iowa beat top ten teams, Wisconsin, and Arizona State wasn't able to hang ten with the two they played.

Bah. I just want some love for my Sun Devils, seeing as how their QB is leaving after this season, and it might be a while before they're this good again. :D

Shellack is too harsh?! ASU sanded, stained, and laquered Iowa's ass. Then they entered them in the county fair and won second place in the woodworking competition.

I don't think so.

There's nothing wrong with Sun Devil Stadium. As college stadiums go, it's pretty sweet.

The Cardinals are crying for a new stadium for two reasons:

1. They play most of their games Sunday afternoon (the Devils play most of theirs Saturday nights). In the early season, it's damned hot there.

2. The real reason - Money. Sun Devil Stadium has limited luxury boxes, and not much in the way of "premium" seating. Plus, the opportunities for revenues from parking, advertising, and personal seat licenses are not there, because the Cardinals don't own the stadium, nor are they an exclusive tenant. They'll make a ton more money in the new stadium, and it's not because of increased ticket sales. They'll likely have a PSL scheme, plus more skyboxes, more advertising, more parking, more concessions, naming rights, etc., etc... all thanks to the generous taxpayers of Maricopa County and the city of Glendale.

First off, I was kidding was I wrote that shellacked was too harsh a word.

Second of all, this is absolutely hilarious. :) And, sadly, true. :(

But, really, all I can say to Franklin is that is really is how you finish, and what the voters remember is that ASU got its butt kicked by 2 great teams, while Iowa's won 7 in a row and whacked a top-10 team. That's not really fair, but that's the way the human polls work--better drop early and rise late, because if you do it the other way around, you're screwed.
