Greenville, SC article on the Clemson side of things: http://greenvilleonline.com/news/sports/2004/11/22/2004112253535.htm

CBS Sportsline is reporting SC with the same result.

After the brawl, both CU and USC-East are skipping out on bowls - not surprised, and both get a bit of respect from me for doing so. Thoughts?

But what about all those orange Poulan Weed-Eater Bowl t-shirts I printed up?

On a more serious note, I applaud the decision. There needs to be more ramifications when stuff like this goes down. It's a start.

Yawn. So what? Another pair of mediocre 6-5 teams will step in and play in a meaningless bowl game.

Don't go handing out a medal or anything. It probably would have cost as much for the teams to travel to the game as it would have paid them to show up.

That's not really the point of the lower tier bowl games. The ACC and SEC both divvy up all bowl money between the conference's teams. The conference then is losing the additional bowl share (and yes, these smaller bowls are little more than break even propositions).

The bigger thing, though, is the loss of practice time and the lack of a reward game for the players. The practice time is key for the program, and you can ask a lot of former players and they'll tell you a bowl game in some random city is one of the most fun things about their career. Not going to a bowl game can also hurt recruiting.

I agree that the punishment is not earth shattering, but I do think it somewhat significant.

Maybe this means I get to go to my first bowl game this year.

the lack of a reward game for the players.
now, why do all the players need to get a reward after having a stupid brawl?

I don't think he made a statement about the decision of not going to a bowl, but responding to someone about how not going to a Bowl can hurt a school.

I think that's the point - they no longer get one.

Sweet! I think the Gophs are assured a spot somewhere. And somewhere besides El Paso would be a nice change. I'm not too high on Detroit either. :)

I think every South Carolina player out there on the field should be amazingly shamed. Their actions directly led to Lou Holtz, one of the great ones, not going out on a Bowl Game.

Georgia Tech offers Boise or Fresno to Minnesota in exchange for El Paso and a bowl game to be named later ;)

I never liked Lou Holtz - I kind of think it's some sort of poetic irony or something that his last game ever was that ridiculous brawl game.

I find it amusing that the official statements from the Clemson AD and SEC commish kept mentioning "student-athletes". I believe the correct terms would be "athletes-students" or perhaps more accurately, "athletes". Each day I become more in favor of paying for their services or set up a semi-pro structure amongst the universities. It removes the hypocricy, imo.

Fuck off.

Oh, and Purdue has accepted an invite to the Sun Bowl, according to El Paso TV...

Where are the Miners likely to end up?

It's looking like Boise, Hawaii, or Silicon Valley, though I would love for the Miners to be able to get a game somewhere in Texas. Might actually get a chance to go see them play if they stay in-state... :)

I was at the sun bowl once. About a 20 hour drive from morgantown WV via the gulf coast. Christmas day in el paso texas. It snowed about 3 inches, and we couldn't even leave on schedule because the roads were iced over, and texas doesn't have much in the way of snow removal equipment.....

ah those were good times

I never licked Lou Holtz -
I have. He tastes sort of like old lady.

For some unknown reason, I laughed at this.
