Hello everybody, I am a regular over at FBCB and I've started a few dynasty reports over there and never gotten them finished. I'm getting ready to start a new one that if all goes well, should be around for a long, long time. My question is, what type of dynasty report should I use? I've tried a couple different ones that if you want to check out you can go to www.fbbgames.com/forum. My name over there is collegebballfanmike. I've always done game by game, but I was thinking about doing month by month or year by year. Should I do detailed reports, or just quick reports? Should I add a lot of roleplay? or just straight news reporting? I know there are a lot of people that are on this board, so I'm looking for as many ideas as I can get. Please help. I'd like to write a dynasty report that actually gets people involved. I've had some problems with getting other people to post in my reports. Thanks.

Alright guys, once again I'm back. I told you I would be. Now listen up. Because of the fact that I've dissapointed some of you by not completing some of my previous reports, I would like to make this one my best ever. I've yet to choose a team, but I will make a selection from simming through a season or two and taking a job offer to start. So I will probably be looking at a pretty bad team. So I don't expect to have near the success I have in my other reports. This report will have a lot of new features. I'll be having a fair share of press conferences, some roleplay between coaches and players, other coaches, etc. I'll also be including a weekly report, in which I'll break down the upsets of the week, and also the polls and conference standings for my conference. At the beginning of every month, I'll have a detailed coaches meeting, in which I'll go over all the recruiting strategies for the month, and maybe other key news. As far as game reports, I'll keep that week by week, and they will be short, but fairly detailed reports. Guys, I promise I'll keep this one going, but I'd like to get a lot of feedback, maybe some other people to help roleplay, as an angry fan, an opposing coach, or something of that nature. I'll get started on it soon, as soon as I've got a team figured out. Thanks.

Montgomery, Alabama

Alabama St. Press Conference

(The Athletic Director for Alabama St. steps up to the podium)

Ahem! Fans, as you all know by now, our mens basketball head coach, Jerome Laguna, resigned last month to take over the program at College of Charleston. I was forced to scramble to find a new head coach, and I've found one. Now, I will tell you that this guy has never coached college basketball in his life, and he is only 24 years old. (gasps and murmurs in the crowd). After talking with him, however, I've found his knowledge for the game to be absoultely incredible for someone so young. So without further adeu, let me introduce to you, the new Alabama St. mens basketball head coach, Mike Schaplowsky. (light cheers and applause from the press)

(Mike Schaplowsky steps up to the podium and shakes hands with AD Brian Johnson)

Thank you Mr. Johnson. (turns to press) I'll take questions in a minute, but first let me introduce myself. I am Mike Schaplowsky, and I am from Wichita, KS. This opportunity was unexpected, but at the same time I am very grateful for it. I've been involved with basketball all my life, as a player, a summer league coach, and even a referee. I know you all my have your doubts, but give me a chance, and I'll do good things for this team. Now, we don't have a lot of time, so I'll only take a couple questions. (points in crowd) Yes, go ahead.

reporter: Mr. Schaplowsky, what brings you to Montgomery all the way from Wichita, KS?

MS: Well sir, I can answer that question with one word. Opportunity. See, I've always wanted to be a college basketball coach, and when this chance came about, it was really an easy decision for me to take it.

reporter: Coach Schaplowsky, what can you bring to this basketball team?

MS: Well, I'd like to think that I can bring a lot. First of all, I've always been very, very disciplined in everything I do. Not only will I make these kids better basketball players, but they will also become better human beings. Also, I have a huge knowledge for the game. I've seen a couple of game tapes from the previous year, and I see some things that could be worked on.

reporter: What makes you think these kids will listen to you? I mean, you're only 5 years older than some of them, and there are a couple that are just as old as you?

MS: (laughing) I'm the head coach, they darn well better listen to me. (laughter amongst the crowd) No seriously, I've already talked to the players, and told them what I expect. I want to make this experience a blast for them. I want to be more than a coach to these guys, I also want to be a friend.

reporter: Mike, what are both your immediate goals, and your long term goals as a coach?

MS: Well, my immediate goal is to take Alabama St. to the best season possible this year, and hopefully another trip back to the NCAA Tournament. (cheers amongst the crowd) As for long term goals, it's no secret that I don't plan to make a career here. I'd like to go back home and become head coach at one of the three major colleges in Kansas. Either Wichita St., Kansas, or Kansas St. If that doesn't happen, then I'll settle for moving up to coach pretty much any team in a power conference.

(At this point, Brian Johnson steps in and whispers that we're out of time)

MS: OK, guys, that's it for tonight. Get used to me, cause hopefully you'll be seeing a lot of me. I can't promise anything, but I guarantee I'll do the best that I possibly can. Thank you and good night.

Nice, keep it up, i'm thinking on starting a dynasty too but managing FIU.

Well, my choice would have been a year-by-year thing (maybe with half-year and pre-postseason updates), without doing any of that fancy news-style reporting stuff.

But that's just me.

First Coaches Meeting: May 1, 2005

(The coaches gather at the home of head coach Mike Schaplowsky. Joining him are recruiting coordinator Willy Reed, lead scout Robert White, and coaching assistant Loyd Davis)

MS: Guys, I'd like to welcome you to the Alabama St. University staff. I expect us to have a strong season. I guess first thing we should do is take a look at the roster.

LD: Coach, I've had a chance to review the roster a bit, and we've got 2 SWAC First Team members coming back in Michael Green and Malcolm Campbell. Malcolm was actually the conference player of the year.

MS: That's very good news. But from what I see, that's all we have back.

RW: Coach, I think Alvin Pettway will fit in well as our starting PF. He averaged about 7 points and 7 rebounds a game. He's a senior also.

LD: I agree, Alvin definitely looks like he could do some positive things for us.

MS: So, we're set on our starting C, PG, and PF. What about the other 2 positions?

LD: Well, I hate to tell you this, but the SG spot will be a problem. 2 of our 3 SG's our freshmen, and the other one is only a sophomore. But Cedric Mitchell, the sophomore, did average 6 points a game as a freshman.

RW: John Dorado has the potential to be a great shooter. I suggest we get him some decent minutes early in the season.

MS: Well, our first game is in the preseason NIT, where we are the 16th seed. So I expect a blowout in that game, and we'll get to look at everybody then.

LD: Do you know who we are playing yet coach?

MS: We're playing Kentucky. They are the preseason #3 in the country.

(whistles are heard around the room)

LD: I think you should try and schedule a tune-up game before that.

MS: I'm definitely going to try. Now, what do we have in the way of SF's?

LD: Well, we might have a problem there, because we have 4 SF's, and 2 of them are seniors. Then of the other 2, one is a freshman and one is a sophomore.

MS: Well, which senior looks better?

RW: Actually coach, Loyd is right, you do have a problem there. They are pretty equal as far as stats and shooting percentages.

LD: George seems to be a bit better shooter, but Xavier had the better numbers last year.

MS: Well then, once again, we'll have to do some mixing and matching early in the season, and see who will perform better. I guess we'll start Xavier the first game and see how he does, then we'll start George in the second game and see who performs better, both starting and coming off the bench.

LD: That sounds like a great plan coach.

RW: I agree.

MS: Now that we've got that covered, let's talk about recruiting. (turns to Willy Reed) Willy, we've got 5 seniors on the team, and 5 scholarships open. We're losing 2 SF's, a PG, a PF, and a C. You've had a chance to look at the recruiting list, do we have anybody that's interested in us yet?

WR: Actually coach, yeah we do. Scottie Westphal from right here in Alabama, is very interested in us. He's a C, and he was an All-American and All-State last year. But there's a couple problems. He's also got 5 other schools that are ahead of us, and well, he weighs 308 pounds.

MS: Well, I don't care about the weight at this point, but this sounds like a great possibility to me. Robert, why don't you attend his next home game, and Willy, put him on our call list and offer him a scholarship right off the bat.

WR and RW: Yes sir, will do coach

WR: Coach there is also a PG from Mississippi, and 2 other C's that have high interest in us. But again, all of them have at least 5 schools ahead of us.

MS: Well, let's scout them all, put them all on our call list, and lets offer the PG a scholarship. We're gonna be busy this month.

RW: Coach, do you want me to go to high school games for all 4 of these guys?

MS: No Robert, you handle the 3 centers, I'll go watch the PG

RW: Yes sir.

MS: So, there are no PF's or SF's interested in us?

WR: Well coach, there are a few, but they are all 1 or 2 star recruits.

MS: Well, let's put the 2 star recruits on our call list anyways.

WR: Well coach, actually, all the 2 star recruits are PG's. We'll have to go to average.

MS: That can be done. Let's look for 2 or 3 star forwards that have average interest in us. We'll scout them, and we'll put some of them on the call list.

WR: Are we gonna try to recruit close to home?

MS: Yes Willy, let's go after all the Alabama players first, then we'll spread from there.

WR: Coach, there are a few foreign guys that are showing interest too. Most of them are PG's.

MS: OK, let's add 3 of those to the call list. And if there are any other positions, add those too.

WR: There is 1 C and 1 PG coach.

MS: Good Willy, add them too.

WR: OK Coach, I've got 14 players on the call list. I threw a SG in there, because he's from Alabama, and if we need to, we can use him as a SF.

MS: Good work Willy. That will be good for now. I think this concludes this meeting. We've got a lot of work to do. Robert and Willy, stay on those recruits. Me and Loyd need to see if we can get some games scheduled this month.

LD: Yeah, we need to get a creampuff in there before we play Kentucky.

MS: That should be no problem at all. Thanks for coming guys. We'll do this again in a month.

(everybody leaves, as coach Schaplowsky and coach Davis begin to look over the schedule, and make some calls)

August 2005

(The coaches meet at a local bar, and they tune into the Red Sox-Yankees game after ordering a pitcher of Budweiser)

MS: Well guys, this should be a fairly quick meeting, as there is no real coaching strategy to discuss. Most of the next few meetings will be based on recruiting only.

LD: Yes! The Red Sox just scored again.

MS: Alright, that'll show those Yankees. They may have got Pedro, but they are still beatable. Now Willy, what do you have for me on the recruiting news?

WR: Some good news coach. That All-American C Scottie Westphal, now has us as #1 on his list!

MS: That's outstanding news! I'll go visit him later on this month. What else?

WR: Well, Irwin Powell, a PG from Mississippi, has some major interest in us as well.

LD: Coach, I'll go give him a visit. I've got friends in Mississippi anyways.

MS: That will work Loyd. We have 2 PF's and a SF that are interested too, isn't that right Willy?

WR: Yes sir, should we go after them hard?

MS: Yes, why don't you and Loyd split up those visits?

WR: I'll take them all if I may.

MS: Yes you can Willy.

WR: Coach, one of the players is in Germany, so I'll be gone for a while. And also, that's the last of our recruiting budget for the month.

MS: Then that will have to do. Hopefully we can get a couple signings before the season starts. (crowd cheers as the Yankees just take the lead)

Alabama St. coaching staff in unison: No! Come on Red Sox, don't let these sorry Yanks beat you.

MS: Guys, I say we cut the meeting off now, we're missing a good game here.

Everybody: AGREED!

September 2005, all the coaches meet in Mike Schaplowsky's office.

MS: OK guys, the first order of business is that our schedule is complete. Let's take a look at it.

RW: Wow, 3 games before the Kentucky game. We could be 3-0 when we face them.

MS: The hope is that we'll at least be 2-1. That South Florida game looks like a tough one.

LD: We went with a light schedule as much as we could. We figure the only way we're gonna make the NCAA's is to win our conference anyways.

MS: That's true, and if we have a good enough record and RPI, we can squeak into the NIT if we don't win the SWAC tournament. Now, let's get to some recruiting business.

WR: Coach, nothing much has changed since last time. We do have a 3 star SF in Judson Adams that is interested in us now. But we've moved down to #2 on Scottie Westphal's list.

MS: Damn, I guess I'll pay him another visit then. Acutally, I'll invite him to come see our campus.

LD: Good idea, maybe when he sees the campus we'll be able to reel him in.

MS: Let's just work on the recruits that we know are interested, scouting them and visiting them.

RW: I think we've got our 5 scholarship offers covered.

MS: We do, I'll be visiting most of them myself. Now, the season is getting closer, I really want 2 recruits signed by the time our first game hits. Let's work hard on these recruits guys.

LD, RW, and RW: YES SIR!

(a distraught Willy Reed walks into Mike Schaplowsky's office)

MS: Hey Willy, what's wrong buddy?

WR: Coach, we lost Scottie. He signed with Evansville.

MS: Damn! Well that's alright, we've still got enough guys that are interested that we can still get some recruits signed.

WR: Most of the guys that are very interested in us are foreign guys though, and our budget isn't big enough to visit them all.

MS: I think I can fix that Willy. I'll just put an appeal to the board of trustees to get us more of a budget. When they see how many foreign guys are interested, they'll have to accept.

WR: I hope you're right coach.

MS: Trust me Willy, things will work out just fine.

(I decided to not have a coaches meeting every month during the offseason, because it would take so much time. So I'll just have 1 preseason coaches meeting, then short detail about the recruiting. I'll still probably have a couple coaches reports during the season.)

Week of Nov. 7-Nov. 13

Only 1 preseason tournament this week, the 2005 Coaches Invitational. It featured Kansas and North Carolina matching up, and the other game was Syracuse and Oklahoma St.

North Carolina beat Kansas 74-65 and Oklahoma St. hammered Syracuse 102-77. In the third place game, Kansas came back to beat Syracuse 57-55, and North Carolina handled O-State 89-77.

Nov. 13, 2005

S. Florida- 81 Alabama St.- 53

My first game as a head coach didn't go quite like I wanted. We hang tough with the Bulls throught the first half, but they built a double digit lead early in the second half and never looked back. The inability to put the ball in the basket was one of our main problems, as we shot 35.1% from the field. Also, we had no answer for their SG Jimmy Baxter, who scored 34 points on 11-24 shooting and 7-8 from the line. We were led by Cedric Mitchell with 13, and Xavier Oliver with 12. My star PG Malcolm Campbell played only 26 minutes, but most of them came in the second half as he picked up 4 fouls in the first half. He did finish with 7 points, but 5 came from the free throw line. We've got 2 winnable games next week, and we'll need to get them both. It'd be nice to go into the Kentucky game with a winning record.

Alabama St. had 2 games this week, and we were looking to win both so that we would be 2-1 when we faced Kentucky. Unfortunately, it didn't happen.

Nov. 16, 2004

Samford- 85 Alabama St.- 69

We were never really in this game, as we trailed 38-29 at the half, and ended up losing by 16. We actually shot better than Samford, shooting 43.6% to their 37.5%. The problem once again was the turnover ratio. We were only able to force 4 turnovers in this game, and we committed 14. Every time we had a chance to cut into their lead, we turned it over. Eddie Harper for Samford was POTG with 21 points in 19 minutes. We were led by Malcolm Campbell who had 12 points and 5 assists. So we dropped to 0-2.

Nov. 18, 2004

Alabama St.- 74 Saint Marys- 53

Finally! I got my first W as a college basketball head coach, and we did so in convincing fashion. We led the entire game, from start to finish. We dominated the boards, outrebounding them 36-29, and again shot lights out at 47.2%. Tonight our defense was stronger as we forced 16 turnovers. Our statistic of 13 turnovers is really misleading though, as we had probably 4 or 5 shot clock violations in the last 5 minutes, because we were running the clock down. So we really should have only had about 8 turnovers. Xavier Oliver continues to impress me, as he had a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, as he got the POTG award. Malcolm Campbell showed again why he was first team all-conference last year, as he scored 18 points on 50% shooting. So at least we'll go into the Kentucky game with a win, which I'm very happy about.

Major upsets:

Only 2 upsets this week, as Fresno State shocked #14 Duke 67-58, and Syracuse was all over #1 North Carolina 71-57. That being said, here are the new rankings for the week of Nov. 21st

OK guys, I'm getting a good start on this dynasty, and I'd really like some input. Do you guys like the new weekly format I'm using? I really like it myself, I think not only does it give you a good feel for my team, but it also gives you a feel at what is going on around the entire NCAA. I enjoy covering all 8 preseason tournaments, and I know many people love hearing about them. So guys, let's get some input going on please.

Duke reclaims their NCAA dominance after their loss to Syracuse by breezing through the Great Alaska Shootout, which brings us to: The Preseason NIT, where we were the #16 seed against Kentucky. As expected, this game was ugly. I can take great pride, however, in saying that we led 2-0 at one point. But that lead was shortlived, as we shot about 10% in the first half. 10%! That's brutal. The halftime score was 57-30, and Kentucky rolled over us by a score of 90-53. We turned it over 27 times, and shot a respectable 31.9%. OK, so that's not really respectable, but considering we were at about 10% most of the first half, we did a decent job. If we had a star player tonight, it was Malcolm Campbell, who led us with a whopping 8 points and 3 assists. Everybody played tonight, and my benchwarmers didn't impress me at all. Anyways, here are the seedings for the tournament, and other first round results.

Kentucky- 93 Southern Miss- 71
Florida- 89 South Florida- 46
Indiana- 105 Southern Illinois- 52
Iowa- 70 Tennessee- 69

So the semifinals are set, as the teams will move to Madison Square Garden in New York. The semifinals and championship game will take place next week, and I'll have those results for you in the next post. But here are the semifinal matchups:

Kentucky will take on Iowa, and Florida will take on Indiana. 2 SEC teams, and 2 Big 10 teams. We will have 1 of 3 possible championships. An SEC vs. Big 10, an all SEC, or an all Big 10. Should be interesting.

I'm not going to bother with upsets this week, as this post is already very long. If this is a problem for you guys, let me know. I'm still enjoying this, I'm just not used to typing up such massive posts. Anyways, Alabama St. has no games next week, so it will be a quick report. Should be anyways. I'll just leave you with the Top 25 polls for the week of Nov. 28th:

First, let's talk recruiting. November was a very successful month for recruiting, as we signed two 3 star recruits, and a 2 star recruit. Congratulations have to go out to my recruitiing coordinator Willy Reed who did a great job picking these guys up. He dropped off the files on all 3 of our newest signings. Here they are, starting with what I think is our top pickup:

I'm going after two more 3 star recruits. What a recruiting year that would be, picking up four 3 stars and a 2 star.

Now, there is only one tournament to report to you this week, and that is the semifinals and finals of the preseason NIT. The semifinals consisted of Kentucky-Iowa, and Florida-Indiana. Unfortunately, Kentucky rolled over Iowa 87-63. The Florida-Indiana game was much, much better however, as a game winning three pointer from the Hoosiers went in and out, giving the Gators a thrilling 78-76 win! This set up an all SEC championship between Florida and Kentucky. Florida won the preseason NIT with an 85-73 victory. Congrats to them. There are still 2 more tournaments to be played, but they will both be played during the Christmas week.

We had no games this week, and the team had some hard practices this week, as we've got 2 games that I think we should easily win. Applachian St. at home, then we'll travel to Morris Brown.

Only 1 upset in the world of college hoops this week (anytime an unranked team beats a ranked team, I'm considering it an upset, whether it really is or not.) And poor Texas is going to be taking a lot of heat, as they fall victim again, this time to Tulsa. The Golden Hurricanes beat them 91-84. Texas was ranked 8th at the time. Tulsa improved their record to 3-3 with the win. So, it's time to begin another week, but before I go, I'd like to leave you with the current SWAC standings going into the month of December.

Week of Dec. 5-Dec. 11

This was a very successful week for my Alabama St. team, as we crushed both our opponents.

Alabama St.- 67
Appalachian St- 45

Malcolm Campbell was the defensive machine in this one, as he pulled off 7 steals! As a team, we had 21 steals, and forced 31 turnovers. That's the type of defense we need to play all year. Malcolm got POTG honors with his 18 points, 7 steal, and 4 assist effort. Also helping out was the SG tandem of John Dorado and Cedric Mitchell, who combined for 27 points. The only thing that really dissapointed me tonight was the fact that we shot just 50% from the free throw line. 12 of 24. We're gonna have to do a lot better than that if we're gonna be successful later on in the season. On a side note, I checked out the team records, and our statistic of 21 team steals is in the record books as #1! An impressive effort to say the least.

Alabama St.- 88
Morris Brown- 54

This game was over before it started, as Malcolm Campbell picked up where he left off, contributing 16 points, 2 steals and 8 assists. One of these days he's gonna get a triple-double with points, steals, and assists. I can feel it. At the very least he'll have a few double-doubles with points and assists. We shot 53.7% from the field tonight, and a pleasant 71.8% from the free throw line. While that number is better than it has been, I think we can improve on it even more. Once again I was able to empty my bench, however it was on a positive note tonight, as 4 players scored in double figures. Campbell led with 16, followed by Xavier Oliver with 15, Michael Green with 14, and Alvin Pettway with 13. We only have one game next week, as we open conference play against Prairie View A&M, who has yet to win a game this season. Should be a nice start to conference play.

Upsets this week:

none. All the ranked teams defeated the unranked teams that they played.

Game of the week:

#1 Stanford defeated #7 North Carolina 88-87

Near upsets this week:

There were a couple close calls for those ranked teams.

#10 Illinois struggled to contain Dayton, but had enough to pull out a 94-89 victory.
#11 UConn survived a furious rally by LaSalle, and did just enough to squeak out with a 95-94 victory.

Thanks, I like it too. I've had 3 or 4 different dynasty reports over on the FBCB forum, all with different layouts, but I'm definitely liking this one the best. Keep reading, and feel free to add input whenever you want.

Week of Dec. 12-18

We had one game this week, our conference opener against Prairie View A&M. They have not won a game yet this season, and we wanted to make sure their first win didn't come against us.

Alabama St.- 60 Prairie View A&M- 46

This was an ugly game to say the least, as neither team could get it going offensively. We finally made a run with about 2 minutes left in the first half, and built an 8 point halftime lead. Our lead in the second half got as big as 13, but A&M hung tough. We were lights out from the free throw line down the stretch, and we get a big win in our conference opener. As a team we shot a brutal 38.9% from the field. Well, I guess that's not that bad, considering they only shot 32%. We were led in scoring by German Harper, a backup PF who plays about 8 minutes a game. Tonight he played 12 big minutes and put in 10 points. We only committed 8 turnovers tonight, the second straight game in which our turnover statistic was a single figure. I hope we can keep that up. Next week we stay on the road. First on Monday the 19th we go to Southern in what should be a tough conference matchup. Then on Friday the 23rd we travel to Oral Roberts. Might be a tough week for Alabama St. The last 2 tournaments of the season take place next week as well.

Upsets for the week:

Temple routed then #24 Indiana 77-54. The Hoosiers are ranked 21st now, so they must have somehow had a good week.

Boston College beat then #16 USC 87-78. USC is now ranked 24th.

Polls and conference standings: Here is a look at the polls for the week of Dec. 19th, followed by the conference standings for the SWAC.
