Another Merchantmen player of the year Poll? Yeah, I just noticed I did one for the 2005 season and with the 2006 being over for Maassluis, here's the new poll.

I'll give a short description of the nine selected candidates as the tenth slot is reserved for a write in candidate. To read the whole Merchantmen story, got to IHOF: Maassluis Merchantmen dynasty (http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums/showthread.php?t=21067).

QB Louie Flannery - #14 - age 24
Flannery was drafted at #5 overall in the 2006 draft and got the tough job to fill the shoes of fan favorite Justin McDavid at quarterback. After a good showing in the first six games, Flannery struggled in the mid-season with 13 interceptions in 4 games to see his season stats get butchered to below league average standards. By guiding the team to an 8-8 record, Flannery is the most succesful Merchantmen quarterback in franchise history. With 2,765 yards passing, Flannery ranks fourth all time in rookie performance.

RB Randy Harris - #28 - age 26
Harris had a good year in 2005, accounting for a team high 10 touchdowns and in 2006 he copied that performance. His rushing game got better with 1,203 yards for the year and a good 4.10 yards per carry average. Harris also set career highs with 39 catches for 362 yards with 9.2 yards per carry.

FB Jamel Rosenberry - #49 - age 25
Rosenberry was brought in to be the new blocker for Harris and it seems he succeeded. The running game overall improved and Rosenberry accounted for 275 yards and 5 scores on the ground. with 3 receiving touchdowns, Rosenberry led the league in touchdowns amongst fullbacks. With 36 catches and 420 total yards he set personal records in seasonal performances.

TE Jim Reiser - #86 - age 25
Reiser got rid of the repuation of Jerry Aubrey by breaking the frachise record of receptions. With 79 catches for 692 yards, Reiser had a leading role in the passing game. Impressive was his improvement in dropped passes, going from 9 in 86 targeted passes to just 2 in 119 targeted passes. His touchdown figure of 3 and key run block figure of 4 are both still too low to concider him as elite tight end.

WR Devin Henson - #83 - age 25
Henson didn't have a big role on offense, yet as a kick returner has become a big name. With touchdowns on kickoff returns in back-to-back games again Fairbanks and at Paris, Henson took the untied lead in the IHOF in kickoff return touchdowns. Henson averaged 25.7 yards per return with no fumbles in 32 returns. He also accounted for 2 touchdowns as the #4 receiver on offensive plays.

OT Wilson Grimaldo - #77 - age 33
Grimaldo became a legend in Maassluis during his second year. The offensive tackle struggled through his first season in orange-white-and-blue, but 2006 was his year. With a key run block percentage of 34.3 and just 1 sack allowed in 400 passing plays, Grimaldo showed he is an elite lineman. The only bummer on his resume is that the team went 3-0 in his three games of absence due to injury.

DT Charles Gomez - #78 - age 27
Gomez posted all-time highlights for a defensive tackle in the IHOF. Gomez was the main reason for the Merchantmen's defense to not allow 400 yards per game. With 99 tackles, Gomez set a record amonsgt defensive linemen, while he also led all defensive tackles with 12.5 sacks. With 3 forced fumbles, of which he returned one for a score in overtime at San Luis Obispo in week 2, Gomez earned All IHOF first team honors, making him the only honored Merchantmen player.

MLB Cody Cluff - #50 - age 25
Cluff came into his own and stayed healthy all year. By not missing a game, Cluff had the opportunity to final post a century in tackles, and he did with 120 tackles. Sadly, Cluff also accounted for 44 opponent receptions and he failed to make a sack or an interception. In return, he did force three fumbles and remains to be seen as a key player on the run defense.

CB Johnnie Stidham - #22 - age 25
Stidham was the Merchantmen comeback player of the year. He started the 2006 campaign projected as nickel back. Injury to Tai Wayne in week one moved Stidham up in the depth chart and he paid back by posting a league top five interception total with 7 picks. Add 5 defended passes, 48 tackles and 2 forced fumbles and you can see a reason why the Merchantmen kept the passing yards below 250 per game. Interesting tidbit is that Stidham was a 53-men roster cut day casualty at the Merchantmen's start of the 2004 season.

I voted for Gomez. Impressive performance by him this season.

I voted for Cody Cluff because even in what could be seen in a "down year" in regards to his high standards, he still recorded 120 tackles and to me, he's the real leader of the Merchantmen D.

I voted Gomez, the only true standout player imo.

Yours truely voted for Wilson Grimaldo. That's mainly because I think that the OL has been the best group the past season, with a much improved running game and a top sacks avoiding line, despite having a qb who's a risk in a sack allowing environment. I guess we won't be needing pass rush sensing and scrambling qbs anymore (byebye Fumblin' Justin and his look-a-like Shane Bowers). Grimaldo was the anchorman of the bunch and jumped out with his sacks allowed figure.

By the way, the last guy to not make the cut was break-out rookie kicker Al Bettis, who did the kickoff duties for the Merchantmen all year and got the start as the points kicker in one game, where he scored on both his kicks in the snow of Boulder. Who also failed to make the list were left guard Butch White (break-out year?), left tackle Kerry McLaurin (5 starts, 5 wins), linebacker Ellsworth Thelen (109 tackles), nose tackle Andy Weliczka (7th round pick with 11 starts), cornerback Myron Stevens (undrafted rookie who became our nickel back) and strong safety Lincoln Gilmore (who kept playing strong enough to stay in the lineup).
