View Full Version : In game - FOF vs. Action! PC FB?

For those that play out their games in FOF 2004 and also have experience with Dave Koch's Action! PC Football:
Any opinions on the merits of both? I know FOF is more of a career/GM simulator, but I have heard some good things about Action's in-game playability and was wondering if FOF is comparable for in-game strategy, flexibility and realism. BTW, I have no interest in head-to-head matchups in Action!, just computer coach AI playability.
Thanks.

Seriously, I tried Action PC Football and it doesn't even come close to FOF in strategy, flexibility and realism.

Action is pretty good and has alot of strategy involved, but it never seems to hold my interest. Maybe it's because my focus is career play above all else.

I think if you're looking to replay single games, or single seasons, ActionPC might be the best on the market (Even better than Strat-o). I don't have any experience with Action, but this is what I heard.
However, FOF wins by default on career, as there isn't a career option in ActionPC.

Actually, there is a career option for Action PC it is just VERY WEAK.

My friends and I have used ActionPC for a 16 team league the past 5 years. We use it because we want to play/coach the games head to head over the internet. When I play the game solo, I find it lacking, so FOF really is the best for solo stuff. But ActionPC is really pretty good when every game you play is head to head against another human coach. We find it very competitive in that regard. By itself for in game playability it is OK I guess for season replays. A friend of mine recreated our high school district and put all our names in, and I found that was a blast to replay our senior season. I think action is stronger for "in game playablity" than FOF, but there is something lacking that is hard to put my finger on. Hope this helps.

Do they still make Strat-o-Matic Football? In my poor student days always a good cheap night: four of us (used to split offense & defense on each side!), beers from the offy and a Strat-o game on the table... Can't remember which year exactly we had, but Ronnie Lott was a god and Greg Hill of the Chiefs was a favourite... (whatever happened to him?)
Happy days!

If I'm reading this right, you're saying that if I just want to play a single season, versus the computer, not really caring at all about salaries, contracts, etc (everything that matters in a career sim), FOF has better "in game" play than ActionPC? (Not saying that I agree or disagree, just wondering).

Yeah, they still make strat-o-matic, in both the PC and Board game.

Greg Hill broke his leg with the Rams in 98 after two big games....then marshall faulk came in 99 - case closed.
I think he spawned with the Lions later but that was it.

If you take away salaries, contracts, and just want to play a game where you call the plays and watch the outcome on the screen in a play by play format, I like ActionPC better. And other than the head to head factor, FOF just blows ActionPC away in every other category.
I don't find it very fun when I try to coach a game in FOF, I do in ActionPC. But FOF is a career sim, and it does that better than any game I have ever seen short of CM. ActionPC is fun because you get to employ actual coaching strategies in the game against a real live opponent over the internet.

I think Action has way better in-game football strategy than FOF. I just can't get past the fact that it has no career play (I don't even count their weak attempt at career play). I've been saying for years, if they would just combine the in game experience of Action with the career mode of FOF, THAT would be the perfect game.

Combining the two portions of both games would be heaven.
