So, how does this work. Are the five finalists the top 5 vote getters and it's already been decided or do the voters select from these 5?

Top five vote getters, or more precisely, who the DAC thinks are going to be the top five vote getters. Either last year or the year before one of the five invited actually finished 6th or 7th in the voting. They have to make the decision on who to invite before all of the ballots are counted, so sometimes there might be a flip flop near the bottom of the top five.

Pretty sure its already been decided and the final 5 are just the top 5.
I am sure of nothing.
I wonder who Jason White voted for, since he has a vote.

Can he vote for himself?

He said he voted for Peterson.

Jason white said earlier in the year that he planned on voting for Adrian Peterson.
i'd think he can, not sure if there's any provisions on that since its a rare occasion

So when White loses by one vote to Leinart because he picked Peterson, I will laugh my ass off...

It won't be that close. Leinart will win by a fair margin I think.

Dola -
Leinart just won the Walter Camp Award.

It's doubtful White will win a 2nd Heisman...but he's still among the 5 finalists so it could be close !

I think Reggie Bush is a better player than Leinart, but that's just me.

I do too, but I still think Leinart will win it. Leinart has better stats than Bush. Leinart is a Junior which will help him as opposed to Bush being a sophomore or Peterson being a Freshman. If White hadn't won it already, I think the vote would be much closer (and there would be a good chance of White winning it.)

I just heard on the Ticket here in Dallas on my way home tonight that Carson Palmer said that his Heisman voting went like this:
1. Matt Leinart
2. Reggie Bush
3. Dwayne Jarrett - Their freshman WR.
Umm...can we look at taking his vote away?

I'm sure no Oklahoma voters don't vote unreasonably like that.
I'm sure no Oklahoma voters don't vote unreasonably like that.
From the votes that are out, they didn't. Palmer's ballot is a joke.

It's a biased vote. You could say the same thing for Jason White voting for Adrian Peterson

If Jason White leaves Matt Leinart off his ballot completely, I'd call it a biased voted as well.

Wht if it turns out to be a tie? What would be the deciding factor?
Will there be a recount? I can see it now OU and USC reps are disputing hanging chads during a re count.

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be suprised by a co-Heisman winner.

A lot of people left off Leinart, or White for that matter, on their ballots...I wouldn't say it's biased. You can make a good argument for about 7 guys being a Heisman top-3 this year. White, Peterson, Leinart, Smith, Bush, Benson, and Arrington. A lot of people throw away their 3rd place vote too, by voting for a local favorite or a lower level player to honor them...of course, Palmer said he voted for Jarrett so he didn't have to vote for White, but...whatever, his call.

If I had a vote, it would be for Alex Smith. Not only do his statistics compare favorably with Leinart and White, but he doesn't have the backfield threat those guys do and he's run for over 500 yards and 10tds.

If I were one of those guys I would pray that I wouldn't win that award. Its like a death warrant.

With over 900 voters and points to the Top 3... the probability of a tie is somewhere between slim and none and slim just left.

In fact, if you can believe these folks, I'm sort of amazed at the number of people leaving White and Leinart off ballots:

I think Jason White should win the Heisman, and I'm not stupid enough to ignore strategic voting, but how someone could leave either of these two guys (Leinart/White) completely off the ballot baffles me. But that's just my opinion.

Granted, it would be a slim chance (1/100,000?), but it's not entirely impossible for it to happen. This would be one of the best opportunity for it to happen since there are two teams with two candidates vying for the trophy.

According to Pat Forde's article on ESPN, White said that he did include Matt Leinart on his ballot and even suggested that he left himself off entirely.

Jason White is the only active college football player with a Heisman Trophy vote.
And he's not telling who got it.
"I decided I wasn't going to say anything," said White, the 2003 Heisman winner and 2004 Heisman finalist. "But there are two people very worthy of it: Adrian (Peterson, his teammate at Oklahoma) and Matt (Leinart, the USC quarterback).
"They're both on my ballot, let's just say that."
As for the third spot? It definitely does not belong to the voter.
"I wouldn't vote for myself," White said.
