<table><tr><td width=220 valign=top>Some of these men are living,
some of them are dead.
Regardless of the their status,
there is a common thread.

The link is not apparent,
So don't fall for any traps.
Discover the names (that's one step),
but you'll need more than that.

Because while these men of sporting
Share a common trait.
The things that make them unique
Will carry an equal weight.

Now, when you find the info
To group them end to end
You can find another set where
they will be more than friends

Once you finish that part
You can solve this to the core
These hints are enough to start
Wanna have another? Well no more.</td><td width=650>http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/a.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/baseball.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/bit.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/cinderella.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/crying.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/cut.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/forever.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/glory.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/hockey.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/ill.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/in.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/it.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/just.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/lasts.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/make.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/me.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/mick.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/no.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/nowhere.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/old.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/outside.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/outta.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/story.jpg http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/enigma/time.jpg</td></tr></table>

I think if the picture titles themselves have to do something with it, they have to be put in order such as:

A baseball cinderella story outta nowhere just lasts forever. In it......

My initial impression is that a common link would be retired numbers/retired jerseys (Autry).

Who is E4 though, a reds catcher, Bench?

Please note the one change in images. The fact that there is a replacement signifies nothing except for enigma's inability to catch errors at 3:00am.

Ok, you subbed one #5 for another #5. :)

edit: nevermind, I see that that is actually Bart Starr (#15), and not Paul Hornung. Carry on.

Methinks movie quotes... probably sports movie quotes... are the assembling guide.

I had thought "no crying in baseball" stood out. I put those together to see if there was a pattern in the grouped names/numbers, but haven't found one.

Well, at least I don't *think I have...

All of the baseball numbers (plus Autry) are retired.

Maybe the words should be arranged according to the numbers on the jerseys of the players? Just a thought.

Well...interestingly, most of the groups contain 5 digits. I had an idea for that, but I'm not sure it fits. If it is even relevant.

Each of the pictures is of a person who has had a number retired in their honor. Also, each of the pictures has a unique file name:
1: Gene Autry - #26 (Angels) - a
2: Drew Gooden - #0 (Jayhawks) - baseball
3: Cal Ripken - #8 (Orioles) - bit
4: Bill Mazeroski - #9 (Pirates) - cinderella
5: Bobby hurley - #11 (Blue Devils) - crying
6: Dick Butkus - #51 (Bears) - cut
7: Jacque Plante - #1 (Canadiens) - forever
8: Mike Singletary - #50 (Bears) - glory
9: John Hannah - #73 (Patriots) - hockey
10: Chuck Bednarik - #60 (Eagles) - ill
11: Ted Williams - #9 (Red Sox) - in
12: George Brett - #5 (Royals) - it
13: Gordie Howe - #9 (Red Wings) - just
14: Willis Reed - #19 (Knicks) - lasts
15: Dizzy Dean #17 (Cardinals) - make
16: Jeff Van Note - #57 (Falcons) - me
17: Drazen Petrovic - #3 (Nets) - mick
18: Julius Erving - #6 (76ers) - no
19: Joe Dumars - #4 (Pistons) - nowhere
20: Pete Maravich - #7 (Jazz) - old
21: Ozzie Smith - #1 (Cardinals) - outside
22: Dwight Clark - #87 (49ers) - outta
23: Deion Sanders - #2 (Seminoles) - story
24: Bart Starr - #15 (Packers) - time

Rearrange the file names to get seven relatively well known quotes from sports movies. Placing the quotes in chronological order gives you:
"Cut me, Mick" - Rocky (1976)
"Old time hockey" - Slap Shot (1977)
"Cinderella story outta nowhere" - Caddyshack (1980)
"I'll make it." - Hoosiers (1986)
"Just a bit outside" - Major League (1989)
"no crying in baseball" - A League of Their Own (1992)
"glory lasts forever" - The Replacements (2000)

Placing
Using the number that the player had retired:
51 + 57 + 3
7 + 15 + 73
9 + 2 + 87 + 4
60 + 17 + 5
9 + 26 + 8 + 1
6 + 11 + 9 + 0
50 + 19 + 1

Placing them "end to end" gives you:
51573
71573
92874
60175
92681
61190
50191

When considered as "more than friends"...i.e. dates:
5/15/73
7/15/73
9/28/74
6/01/75
9/26/81
6/11/90
5/01/91

You get the seven dates of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters. Ryan is a player who has had his number retired by three franchises...the Angels, Rangers & Astros. Therefore the solution is "nolanryan"
.

I never saw Miracle, but I'm thinking that words like "hockey" and "glory" (maybe even "forever") might find their way into a quote from that movie. Anyone?

On second thought, maybe not.

The puzzle makers and puzzle solving group are really fucking good at this.

It's very enjoyable to read.
