Haven't seen the trailers. I hope it will be a good movie. There was a long thread about this a while back, but I couldn't find it.

I reread the 5 books in the trilogy every couple of years or so - pure quality! Not knowing a great deal about the film, but going by what generally happens, if you haven't read the books you've probably got a better chance of really enjoying the films. Fans of the books will have built up images over the years of the characters and settings, and often if you're a fan of the base written material, the film doesn't match your expectations.
Having said that I will be going to watch it with fingers crossed, hoping...

Im not a fan of Zooey Deschanel as Trillian- but the others are fairly nice. British, which is good- I dont want to see some yank pulling off an awful cockney accent.

I'm not sure about Zooey either, but Sam Rockwell is genius. Mos Def was an interesting pick for Prefect, and that may be the make or break casting.

I agree. It seems as if Adams was involved in the script writing- which is VERY good news. I think Def has the potential to play Prefect, but I wonder if he'll overplay him- Prefect was perfect because he couldn't give a damn. I dont see Def pulling that of.

I read it after, as a very young boy, I saw the PBS version. My Mom was a big Doctor Who fan, and it was on immediately before it as I recall. The special effects were terrible, but the story was fun and easy enough for a 9 year old.
I read the books after recalling the childhood episode, and concur, I loved 'em. More the first couple than the later ones, as they just seemed more familiar.

Time to dig up My mp3 of the guide. It is, I believe, the only mp3 I have. It has been too long since I have listened to it. I have no earthly clue as to where my copy of the book is.

It's interesting, Adams has added characters to the movie that were not in the books. Such as Humma Kalava (played by John Malkovich) and Questular Rontok (played by Anna Chancellor). Since there have been so many different versions of HHG, I guess adding new characters makes some sense.

Duglas Adams died 3 years ago.
Which of course makes perfect sense for this project.
the project started in 1983 when Adams went to LA to start writing the script, many things happened, the project mostly died and resurrected in 1998.
In 2001 Adams died just after finishing the script.
So yes he was involved.
For more info read "Don't Panic" by Neil Gaiman, a biography of Adams, but also an history of the Hitchhiker series in all of it's many and various forms (this book is quite funny too).

I predict an opening weekend of $42 million It's tough for me to guess until we can see the trailer. So many good movies have been eff'd up and so many bad ideas have been made into decent movies.
EDIT: And it was just pointed out to me that it was 42... million.

Exactly. Remember, these books aren't exactly deep. They are radio plays made into books. It should translate pretty well to movie form as long as they hold true to British comedic taste.

See, I was worried they wouldnt- I would have preferred an all British cast for that reason.

Don't know much about the director (Garth Jennings), but he sounds like he has the right take on things:
(From a BBC interview)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A2257599
Jim Lynn: When you were first approached to do the movie, what was your reaction?
Garth: "What an awful idea." We thought it would be the typical Hollywood 'ruin it, ruin everything' thing, and we actually told our agent not to send us the script. Frank, being a very good agent, sent it anyway, and so it sat on our desks for approximately two weeks, and we just kept looking at it and thinking 'oh they'll have ruined it, we're not going anywhere near it'. We'd actually started making our own film, and had already begun the casting process, and then one day Nick said 'Look, you should read this, I've just read it' and he was very, sort of, quiet about it, and said 'just have a read and see what you think'. I took it home, and (my wife can vouch for this) I went into the toilet to read it, expecting to come out quite quickly, and forty-five minutes later appeared, saying to my wife 'this is actually really rather good'. And then my second reaction was 'brilliant. It could be too marvellous to do.' You know, this is very important to a lot of people, not just me, but to an awful lot of other people. Once we realised that, it was a perfect opportunity to do what we do best, you know, we jumped straight in there, and it's been a rollercoaster ever since.
Sounds British, which I suppose is good. :)
