Atlanta player picks Buckeyes
Monday, December 13, 2004

Anderson Russell, a running back/defensive back from Marist High School in Atlanta, yesterday became the 13 th commitment to Ohio State’s recruiting class of 2005.

"I wanted a good challenge playing college football and I felt like Ohio State was the place for that," he said. "It’s a great school with a great football program."

Recruited primarily by defensive backs coach Mel Tucker, the 6-foot, 197-pound Russell might have seen his last day as a running back, even though he rushed for 610 yards and 14 touchdowns in Marist’s wishbone offense this season. OSU wants him as a safety.

"Ohio State likes players with athletic versatility and Russell fits that bill," said Bill Kurelic of Ohio Football Recruiting News.

Russell ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash at Ohio State’s summer camp in June.

"I’ll play safety if that’s what they want," said Russell, who also had been courted by Duke and Furman. "I’m just excited about being a Buckeye. (Atlanta native and safety) Brandon Mitchell was my host, and he told me he loved it there, and has had a great experience. I hope to do the same."

There also were reports that linebacker James Laurinaitis of Plymouth, Minn., committed to OSU yesterday, though Laurinaitis could not be reached for comment.

Laurinaitis, considered the top linebacker in his state, had previously committed to Minnesota but had second thoughts after the Gophers, once 5-0, faded and finished 6-5. He still plans to make an official visit to Minnesota this weekend.

How good is this guy, for those of you who may have seen him in person? Just wanting to see if he's a top of the class recruit, or more of a last-second fill in to the class. Thanks!

Thanks!I saw Anderson play against Tucker in both his Junior and Senior years. To be honest, I wasn't that impressed overall. The prevailing thought of several folks in Tucker was that Anderson doesn't like to get hit. In particular, this season he ran very tentatively after Tavares Kearney (a more highly-recruited D1 kid than Anderson) hit him a time or two. Granted, they don't call Tavares "TKO" for nothin', but the point is that in D1, every kid on the field is going to be near, at, or better than the level of Tavares. Yes, Anderson has good, but not great, speed. However, he was a near non-factor in the Tucker-Marist game this year. I wish Anderson all the best, and hope he does well, but he's definitely not a top-of-the-class recruit at this point. Just my $0.02.

"Russell, who also had been courted by Duke and Furman."

Should say enough right there. Seems like he might be a long shot to ever contribute if those are the only other notable schools recruiting him.

I just checked some more info on him. That 4.44 didn't sound right. According to Rivals.com, his best time at the Atlanta NIKE Training Camp on May 8th of this year was 4.59. According to Scout.com, he ran a 4.61 at "MSL Combine", whatever that is. Those figures sound much more accurate than 4.44. He clearly wasn't as fast as Brandyn Young or Asher Allen or Thomas Brown or the other gazelles that Tucker has put out there. If Anderson had gone to public school, he'd be at Tucker, and I seem to recall a comment by one of the Tucker coaches that Anderson wouldn't have started at RB for Tucker. (Of course, the Tigers have sent every starting tailback they've had for the last 10-15 years to D1 schools, and the next two or three are headed that way as well, so that isn't saying all that much. ;))
