OT: Can anyone hear recommend a good Creative writing software?

Speaking as one of the forum's resident writers, I'm not entirely sure what you're asking. Are you asking for guidelines on how to format your manuscript appropriately? If so, just do an Amazon search for "format manuscript" and a load of resources should appear.

I've heard of software available that's supposed to aid in novel writing. It would keep track of character development, plot lines, etc. I've been wanting to get a program like this for my wife, but I've never been able to find a program like this even after repeated searches.

I've written a novel as well, but I used just plain ole Word - I just made sure to format it in the generally accepted manuscript form - ie, 12 point Courier (font is flexible, though), 1 inch margins, double spacing, paragraph indention (no spaces b/w paragraphs), header w/ running page count and author/book identifier/reminder, and ragged right text margins.

(Of course, I learned about most of these AFTER I was finished, so it took several hours to go back and reformat...)

If cincyreds was talking about screenwriting software, then disregard what I said earlier (my post was in regards to novels) - screenwriting is a different beast entirely, and I definitely purchased some software to help me with the syntax involved in movie scripts. I purchased Screenstyle - I think it was like $30 or so - it's not the best, but it's a simple Word plug-in, so you can still use a word processor that's familiar to you rather than learning a whole new program.

Tracy Hickman plugs Dramatica (dramatica.com) every once in a while on his newsletter. I played around with a demo a while back and that's more for keeping track of plot points, structuring your novel, developing themes and conflicts, etc. Seems like you've already done this and you just need some sort of layout/presentation software.

Do some research into publishers. Most are not accepting unsolicited manuscripts and will simply trash your work without reading it. Learn how to send a query letter first. That's a letter that asks if they have any interest in the type of book you've written. There's lots more out there you should know. Try the "Dummy" book on getting published. It covers the basics.
