This morning I received a weekly email from The Sporting News. The column in question talked a bit about Manning and how although it would be tempting to draft him #1 next year, you'd still be better off with a RB.
I think that's true if we're talking about top-tier RBs, but if you're drafting towards the end of the first round, Manning might not be a bad idea.
What do folks here think?

i took him with my 1st pick no matter where I picked (if he was available) this year. See no reason to change that next season.

If he has James back, I think you draft him #1.
Agreed. With James he's an unquestioned #1 barring some unforseen circumstance. Without, possibly, but I'd consider other options.

If you have the #1 pick I'd take Holmes (barring injuries) but other then that I think he's the #2 guy.
Also keep in mind so leagues don't use crappy croing systems that make RB the top point scorers in the game

I took Holmes first and he definitly helped me, but I would go with Manning next year.

I'll take the #1 RB and still get a serviceable QB later. If you take Payton Manning at #1 you will get stuck with an absolute garbage RB at #24.

I would have taken Ladanian Tomlinson #1 this year and most likely I would take Tomlinson #1 again next year.
With more teams going to a running back by committee approach, or pulling something like the Vikings with Bennett/Moore/Smith, etc, I want to make sure i have two solid RBs before anything else. The dropoff from Manning to other QBs is big this year but unless you really think he'll throw 50 TD passes again next year I don't think you can consider him #1 overall.
I know many who would take him late first round, but I don't think I would do that either, RBs are just too valuable.
** speaking of course of your standard yahoo league.

I'd take him since he's an iron man. Also, some guy in my fantasy league last year picked Olindo Mare with his first round pick. :)

I took Manning #1 this year, so I'm not exactly hesitant to do so again.
In a pair of Yahoo public leagues, with Manning at QB on both squads, I've gone a combined 23-5 during the regular season.
My current RB's on those teams are:
Team A - Brian Westbrook, Emmitt Smith, Michael Pittman
Team B - Corey Dillon, Julius Jones, William Green
At various times, I've had & released RB's
Team A: Travis Henry, Steven Jackson, Artose Pinner, Kevin Jones, Onterrio Smith,
and Eddie George
Team B: Anthony Thomas, Onterrio Smith, Lee Suggs, Richie Anderson, and Kevin Jones
And with that fairly motley crew of RB's, I've got a #1 seed & a #3 seed, and have won 13 of my last 14 games combined.

I took Manning first, T.O. second, and Tony Gonzalez early this year. I more or less ignored Running backs, employing the waiver-wire to plug and play RBs into my lineup. The passing attack actually worked this year--I'm 12-2 with the top seed in the playoffs. I think I will continue to ignore RB's from this point forward...

I would not take him at #1 overall, but I would definetely see him as a first round pick in a typical league. There are good reasons to go with RBs early and often, but at some point the RB Stud craze goes too far (and this year may be the tipping point in that regard).

In the league I'm totally dominating, I kept Culpepper & Holt from last year, losing my picks from the first two rounds.
Holt, clearly, was a mistake, but overall the situation has worked out for me. Early on Culpepper won me a bunch of games alone. In the interim, I've rotated in RBs like Westbrook, K. Jones, L. Suggs, even Zereoue when he got hot. That, combined by taking consistent WRs and TEs, along with Pittsburgh's defense, has helped me.
I think the RB-centricity can be overemphasized. This year, there were very few RBs you could count on, week in and week out, to perform at a high level. Who knows about next year. Maybe, after the top 5 RBs, even, one needs to look at matchups and waiver-wire pickups....
