Ok, I had to laugh at this thread title. :D
Note to self: Remind my wife once again there's no chance in hell I'll ever get a Vasectomy.

After reading the first thread on the subject, my wife and I had a discussion. I agreed to buy her pretty much anything she wanted, even if I had to go into massive debt, as long as she doesn't make me have a vasectomy when we no longer want any more kids. She agreed.
It's like the weight of the world has been lifted from my shoulders. :)

If your wife MAKES you get a Vasectomy, you really need to reconsider a few things.

I got a vasectomy after my wife got pregnant for the third time. I figure if she can push out three kids, I can get my nuts cut. My vasectomy was horrible (abbreviated version below):
Operation took an hour. Had to tie my right side off because he didn't ground me well enough and when he zapped me, I felt it.
Had swellage of my left side. Three days later it looked as if I had four testicles on one side and one on the other.
Went in for second operation to drain the blood from my left side. Got an epidural (spelling?) and was numb from the waist down.
Spent another two weeks out of work, when I started getting bad headaches. Turns out they were spinal headaches that were the result of the epidural. I was leaking out fluid at the bottom of my spine and my brain was hitting my spinal column thus giving me headaches. Drank some coke and felt better (the caffeine tightens you up to prevent leakage).

<laughs>, Actually I am. I stand by my original statement, if my wife MADE me get a Vasectomy, I'd rather just leave. I'd never make my wife have any unnecessary surgery <*edit, unnecessary PAINFUL surgery*>, and I wouldn't let her MAKE me have any.

I wasn't saying that my wife will beat me into submission if I don't get my balls chopped. But anyone who is married should know how wives have a way of "making" someone do something without actually "making" them do it.
My wife had used that argument for years that a Vasectomy was so much easier than the cooresponding female procedure, and for that reason, I should be willing to do it. The only position I had going for me was that the area is just so much more sacred for us. When her brother and his wife just recently had a third child (one that wasn't a decision), the talk began again about how we would handle the situation when we were finished having kids. Once again, I seemed to be on the short end of the argument.
BUT, after FOFC and its off-topic discussions of testicle-snipping, I was able to emerge victorious. HAIL FOFC!! :D

Just to give the other side...when I got snipped it was one of the easiest things I have ever done.
And when it came time to decide whether or not to have one, or WHO should get fixed - it wasn't even a decision. My wife was pregnant three times, once with twins...nothing I could ever go through in the area of reproduction could hold a candle to what she had to endure...not even in the same ballpark.

Exactly. This was largely what I meant when I said "making" me have a vasectomy. We only have one child, but I suspect we'll have at least one more, and it didn't seem like I had a leg to stand on in the debate about who should have the procedure since I didn't have to endure what she did in the birth.

Yeah, the way you guys decided it is fine. I'm not saying that a guy can't get snipped, just saying that it should be a mutual decision.

Fortunately, nothing like that happened to me today. I liken the feeling to having someone tug on that "magical" nerve that instantly feels like someone just kicked you down there. A delightful sensation of pain and "I'm gonna throw up" at the same time. Two thumbs up from me!
FWIW, I wanted this. Two kids is enough for us, and we've had one pregnancy scare too many.

Mine was no problem at all... Except for the shock, the wife made the appointment for me.
Went in, little poke (Part that hurt the worst)
Some tugging, 5 minutes into it, I was like, so have you started yet? Doctor was like, just finished the left one and I am starting on the right.
Total of 15 to 20 minutes, I was done.
Only issue is, about 2 months after, I had some seminal leakage from working out, and the right nut had swollen up to the size of a baseball, was told to relax, take some time off from the gym, and it went right back down.

I see it exactly that way. My wife has given me the two most beautiful/bright/loveable sons I could have ever asked for. I was by her side both times, a complete nervous freak that anything serious would happen to her and I would lose her. I am not putting her into any more pain than what she's already been through. I owe her that.
She didn't ask me to get it done, I told her I'd get it done... when she's definitely sure she doesn't want one more :)

Oh, I forgot to add that even though it was three weeks of pain and discomfort, it was worth it. Shooting blanks now.
A piece of advice since I missed the two previous threads: ensure you ask for coolace (spelling?) when you get percocet. The percocet stopped me up good, and when I went in for the second operation, I hadn't taken any percocet in a while...so after the operation I had to take a dump.
When I woke up in the hospital I tried to get out of bed, but fell to the floor because I couldn't feel from the waist down (epidural). I had to crawl back into bed and ring for the nurse. When she helped me to the can, I couldn't feel to push out the feces, so they had to use "other means" to get the poopie out. (it was okay, I couldn't feel anything in my ass).
Bottom line, ask for that coolace stuff or take some Ex-Lax.

I've seen both vasectomies and tubal ligations done during my rotations in my 3rd year. Tubal ligations are actually much more problematic. There is a higher percentage of complications, some that are very serious. Vasectomies very rarely have complications and from hearing both men and women in post-op visits, I dare say less painful.
In any case, should the time come that Ms. Eaglesfan and I don't want any more kids (we have known at the current time), I'll gladly volunteer for the vasectomy (knowing that it will hurt really bad for a few days but then it will be fine.)

Had mine done six years ago. It was quite easy and relatively painless. The best advice I got was to have a good supply of frozen peas on hand. Keep things nice and cold down there for 24 hours, then no physical activity for an additional 48 hours and everything was back to normal.

can't you guys just agree to use condoms instead of doing unnecessary procedures. there's more risk of something going wrong then just spewing into a rubber. i'll look into that option.
it's too drastic an operation for something that is only viable for 10 years or less. women go barren in their 40's, but most stop having children in their mid-30's or so...you want to give up your nuts for about 5 - 10 years of unprotected sex? here's a science lesson guys - once they stop menstruating there's no longer any risk of getting pregnant. my wife is on the pill and i'm sure will go back on once we want to stop having kids - combine that with pulling-out and i'm willing to take my chances.

i think it's fascinating that people are so willing to do procedures onto their friggin reproductive organs when the benefits are only for about 5-8 years. after that your boys will still be looking up at you with that glazed over look of indifference. hey, diff'rent strokes i guess. in a way it's commendable. not the route i'd take.
all i know is that if no doctor goes near your nuts with a knife there is 0% chance of anything happening. the closer he gets to your sac with the knife is when probability starts to creep in. the only way i'd allow a knife near my sac is if a dog is chomping on them.
i saw this thing on tv when this doctor used electricity to circumcise an infant (apparently they used to do it this way in certain parts). i need not tell you what happened when too much juice was accidentally used. she was never the same, if you catch my drift.
i'll pass. they can have my nuts if they can get me on the table kicking and screaming.

Vasectomies are permanent. Less than one tenth of one percent of all men who get a vasectomy experience a spontaneous regeneration of the vas deferens. In fact, 99.9% of all vasectomies are completely successful.

say Wife stops having kids at 35. then some time after that, say around 44 years old she starts to undergo the changes. after she's done and barren no more risk of kids. But Husband got the vasectomy done when she was 35. so for thsoe 9 years, yeah, that's cool - no risk of kids. but it's not like Wife is going to be fertile her entire life. too drastic a procedure for only a decade or less of risk-free sex.
so that's whay i mean when i say the benefits are only for 5-8 years.

Perimenopause can last quite a long time, and fertility can be unexpectedly retained into a woman's 50's. If Ms. Eaglesfan and I decide we are done having kids, I don't want to take that chance.

I understand that, HA. However, my son was conceived while using a condom and we just had yet another pregnancy scare. Really, the procedure itself takes 20-25 minutes and isn't "drastic" as you contend. I'll take the incredible amount of peace of mind for the next 10-15 years as well as the added ability to be spontaneous with my wife (no more, "give me 10 secs, I'll be right back"). That's definitely worth sitting with an ice pack between my legs for the next 1-2 days.

so that's whay i mean when i say the benefits are only for 5-8 years. I see your point in general, but your numbers are still pretty far off.
The average caucasian woman begins menopause at age 50.5. 10% of all women still get their period at age 54 and some as late as 57.
Most women stop having kids by the time they are 36 (the age when the incidents of birth issues shoots way up). Many are done way before this age.
So, in reality - you are likely looking at around 15 years of the condom and the pill and "pulling out". That's two to three times more than your "5-8 years". I would hope your wife doesn't stay on the pill that long...the health risks are pretty serious. Pulling out is such ridiculous birth control I'm not sure that needs further comment.
That leaves stuff like condoms - which can have a failure rate of up to 14%. IUDS are better, but need to be inserted by a healthcare provider. The diaphragm can have higher failure rate than condoms...
Vasectomies, which in the large majority of cases provide nothing worse than a few days of discomfort are the best type of birth control available, outside of abstinence.

The really crappy part of it.. it's not that uncommon for a woman to think she is done menopause (the perimenopause transition) and suddenly have one fertile egg escape 8 months or a year (or in rare cases even longer) after she thinks she is infertile! Suddenly, a woman who thinks she is completely infertile has a baby in her 50's. I've seen quite a few cases of that happening.

I think HA and Mizzourah would find it more profitable to print out the above post when discussing the "V" issue with their wives.
I would have been more than willing to have a vasectomy done, if my wife hadn't had C-sections as deliveries. In fact she wanted to deliver the second(last) vaginally, but that wasn't in the cards for her. Since she was open, she went through the tubal ligation. IF she hadn't had to already have surgery, I would have posted one of these Vasectomy threads of my own by now. As it is I didn't have to go through with the procedure, but I still get to reap all the benefits of the "Belushi clause".

my wife does that. but it's not jsut her. sometimes i'm privy to her female conversations and i also watched this documentary on female interactions with each other - i don't understand how they wake up in the morning.
why they insist on beating themselves down like that with complexes about their weight and looks is beyond me. i feel very good about myself and i guess you can say i'm overweight although i don't look it since i'm tall (6'1"). i have a beer belly or something that resembles one, and while i'm not toned i have a muscular frame. generally i have your protypical big guy, not fat but not Richard Simmons-fit body. do i beat myself over the head when i look in the mirror and see my chest (my problem area) isn't chiseled or i don't have a 6-pack? no. i'm balding in the back of my head but hey the sun will still rise tomorrow morning. not the end of the world.the way i see it it's a natural progression of life. if i was the only guy in history to have thinning hair and to gain about 20 lbs. after the wedding i'd feel bad, but such is the way things go.
women are just a totally different species. i couldn't live like that. i understand 50% is just a cue for you to shower them with compliments and make them feel better about themselves, but i kiss my wife all the time, tell her i love her 10 times a day or more and give her 4 or 5 different compliments a day. this is daily. she might be immune to it by now, but she's not in an environment where's she devoid of love and praise. yet still she complains every once in a while. amazing.

why they insist on beating themselves down like that with complexes about their weight and looks is beyond me. i feel very good about myself and i guess you can say i'm overweight although i don't look it since i'm tall (6'1"). i have a beer belly or something that resembles one, and while i'm not toned i have a muscular frame. generally i have your protypical big guy, not fat but not Richard Simmons-fit body. do i beat myself over the head when i look in the mirror and see my chest (my problem area) isn't chiseled or i don't have a 6-pack? no. i'm balding in the back of my head but hey the sun will still rise tomorrow morning. not the end of the world.the way i see it it's a natural progression of life. if i was the only guy in history to have thinning hair and to gain about 20 lbs. after the wedding i'd feel bad, but such is the way things go.
women are just a totally different species. i couldn't live like that. i understand 50% is just a cue for you to shower them with compliments and make them feel better about themselves, but i kiss my wife all the time, tell her i love her 10 times a day or more and give her 4 or 5 different compliments a day. this is daily. she might be immune to it by now, but she's not in an environment where's she devoid of love and praise. yet still she complains every once in a while. amazing.
On that note -- my manager just told me I missed a great holiday party and I'm someone who appreciates good food....what the hell does that mean? Is he saying I've got this rep in the office as someone who eats a lot? So I gave him crap about that and asked if he was saying I'm a pig. In other words, maybe I read into things too :)
Anyway...why am I reading this thread? The subject was scary and the contents were enough to make me go promise Passacaglia right now I'd never ask him to get a vasectomy. I'd never heard it's dangerous to stay on the pill before, though.

Depends upon the formulation of the pill. The estrogen/progresterone balance is important. However, many forumations of the pill can increase your risk of breast and uterine cancer. Of course, it is protective against some forms of cancer too. However, it can increase your risk of heart disease. It's a balance of risk vs benefit like many things.

Is there anyway they can just knock you out 100% during the procedure?
I was knocked out for the corrective operation....just have some internal bleeding. :)

Yep, it's quite confusing to say the least. When I tell her she looks good, she just gives me that look like, "you just want some sex".
What can a guy do?
give them the sex.
Classic :D
