You can tell the site is in a wootoff when you see the yellow flashing police-car-style lights on top. There's also a yellow bar which tells you, in essence, how much of their inventory is sold -- when they're all sold out, they move on to the next item.

Lenovo is a good brand, but that particular laptop has Vista on it. That would be a dealbreaker for me.

If you are not opposed to buying a Dell, they have pretty similar models available w/ Windows 7 for a little less (I didn't look in detail at all the specs, so I could be off on them being less).

I'm not particularly impressed with the changes I've seen in ABEBooks or Audible since merging. Bibliofind and CDNow, which were supposed to be standalone purchases, changed to become shells for Amazon's business. Amazon promised to leave Reflexive alone, but closed them as a retailer as of today. Working with Brilliance as a retail partner is much more of a chore than it was when they were independent.

What's going to happen with Woot is that it'll stay pretty much as it is for a year or so. Then they'll tinker. They'll leverage Woot to drive business to Amazon, they'll shut down deals.woot.com, they'll see woot sales that sell out in an hour and jack up prices so the sales are spread out through the day, which kills the cachet. Ultimately, what will be left is a brand name with little differentiation in the marketplace.

Seriously, the whole mythoogy of Woot is that they offered sales cheap because they had to move the bulk of the product in a day (at least in the beginning). Companies with a market cap of $50 billion don't have to sell 5000 iPods in a day at a markup of $5 to pay the light bill. THey can set the markup at $30 and spread out those sales over a month. The end result is that you aren't paying $99 for your iPod; you're paying $129. And it'll take time, but it will happen. And just like other companies, the CS guys who communicate with the public will chat about how they're not affected in the least until the day they decide to pursue other opportunities.

As far as Zappos goes, on my timeline, the autonomy ought to be ending sometime in the next three to six months. Little stuff at first, but I still think Tony Hsieh's got less than a year before he walks.

Woot's my home page; I hope I'm wrong about the effects. But I just see the temptation to offer "advice" to "help the bottom line" as too strong to ignore over the long haul. I think this is the moment Woot stopped being cool.

That lasts until the items they're selling are gone or until whatever period of time they've chosen for the wootoff has come and gone. Some woot-offs have gone 3+ days.
