Anarchy Online's New Pricing Mode: FREE

I never was that thrilled with the idea of this game but you know what, at a price like FREE, I might just have to check it out. As much as I'd love to play WoW or CoH, I've been having an MMORPG itch for a while and this fits the bill as it's, well, free. Granted, it's only the original game with no expansions but that's cool. When I played other MMORPGs, I typically spent most of my time, wandering the world, seeing what the game makers had created much more than trying to furiously level and macro my way to the "top".

I was pretty excited about this until I saw the conditions, I just won't have any real time in the next 2 weeks to give it try.

Should Funcom deem that a too high-increase in server load or other unforeseen events will lessen the experience for existing players the offer will be terminated at our discretion. The free version does not include access to any of the three expansion packs. Should you wish to upgrade to any of the expansion packs monthly subscription and client fees will be added. "

just sign up soon and let it sit. If you are still playing it a year from now (ie, you are enjoying it) and they make you pay, I'd say it is probably worth the monthly fee.

AO has the distinction of being the worst launch of a game ever. Absolutely unplayable for a good while.

Then when they fixxed it up to playable status it really wasn't worth playing.

Haven't touched it in a couple years though, so who knows what it's like now..it's obviously badly in need of subscribers, and I really think they should've set this deal up BEFORE World of Warcraft came along, but anywho...

It's free, so give it a shot..I'm just very bitter. :)

Well, I'll give it a try, but AO was the running joke for the world for quite awhile. I can't imagine it's very impressive.

Calis answered pretty well above, but yeah. A friend was getting it and talked me into it, and the launch was just terrible - not only was the game not ready, but the whole thing was screwed up (lots of people, for example, got disks with invalid CD keys). Just a mess.

And the game was kind of pretty...but it boiled down to pretty mindless and repetitive gameplay pretty quickly.

even free, there's a lot of other games in my existing collection I'd rather play instead.

This describes the majority of MMORPGs that I've played or heard about (with the possible exception of PKing aspects). Is there one you or anyone would recommend where this is not the case?

I haven't played this game, but please please note the fact that you cannot play any of the game's expansions for free. You're limited to the original game only, which may be good for some, but from AO players I know, the game gets much better with the Shadowlands expansion.
