Getting XM Today.

After months of debating I have finally decided that XM would be a better fit for me than sirius is. I choose XM because of Nascar and because of the better selection of talk shows.

Just kidding, I just got Sirius for Xmas and am loving it, I am sure you will enjoy XM just as much. I had always leaned towards XM in my personal debate too, but the couple of things that made me go with Sirius was the NFL Radio (not sure if XM has this) and the fact that Howard Stern will show up on here and will be programing 3 channels of his own.

Now I know Stern is not going to be on Sirius for another year, but I lso did not expect to have this by now. I thought I would get it about June or so but my wife really surprised me with it for X-mas.

Also, not sure what kind of packages XM has now on their radios, but this Sirius one comes with the home and car kits, and a built in FM transmitor for $150. And the wife is already in love with it and wants one herself since I will be taking my on the truck with me, and Sirius lets you add a second subscription for only $5 a month I think it is.

Like I said though, I am sure you will love either one, I think right now I would be happy with XM as much as I am Sirius.

XM has MLB. Sirius has NFL. However, what's the point? Unless you live in an area where you can't get your baseball or football teams' games on the radio, why bother with XM or Sirius? The broadcast is the same one your local AM station is playing, probably a little clearer, but it that worth the price? Also commerical free music is supposed to be the selling point, right? My CD player has been providing that free of charge for years.

I got Sirius from Christmas, but haven't installed it yet.

The nice thing about the satellite MLB is if you are out of market from your favorite team you can still listen them.

I have not seen it on the programming lists, so I do not think so. Since I am usually driving at night this is a small downer because I like to listen to the show, but then again that is always on a station somewhere and never have a problem finding it, so I will live.

I didn't know that Phil Hendry was on XM, that is kind of a bummer I will not get him, but then again I am rarely up when his show is on anyways.

Do you guys feel both will stick around and fight it out for years to come? Or do you think one will win out and that will be it. Obvioulsy I have my money on Sirius if only one can survive.

1) I have very little interest in any of my "local" teams and am a fan of totally non-local teams (and there are 3 local teams here in football alone).
2) This doesn't necessarily apply for me at the moment, but in the past and certainly in the future I've had gigs where I'm driving in and out of radio zones and into different radio regions often... so I either don't get any reception, or don't know what channels to listen to.
3) I don't have that many CD's, and do not download that much music. Being able to pick a nice easy-listening station (or whatever floats your boat) without worrying about buying or making CD's is very convienent.

To be honest, I'd be surprised if there was an area anywhere in the continental U.S. that didn't pick up Coast to Coast AM.. That show is on everywhere..

Good show although I must admit that I did enjoy it a bit more with Art Bell.

Basically if you have more than a 20-25 minute commute to work, I think its worth the $10 a month. I used to have it, but only drove 5 minutes each way to work. Sure you drive other times, but I couldn't justify it. Nonetheless a great product.

I was all set to get XM this past weekend after I got about $125 in Best Buy gift cards, but then I found out how much it was going to cost to buy the necessary equipment and get it installed, and I decided against it. I wanted to have one unit that could be used in both of our cars. My car has an XM-ready Pioneer stereo; my wife's minivan does not. From what I was told, it would cost me:

$99 for the Skyfi 2 unit (after $30 rebate)

$49 for the car adapter for the minivan (Best Buy was selling both the unit and the adapter for $169, but online at XMradio.com they were cheaper if purchased separately)

$100 for the two parts needed to hook up to my XM-ready Pioneer

$100-120 to install it all in both cars


And then, it would cost me $16 a month ($10 + $6) because I would have 2 receivers (although only 1 unit), meaning that I would have to pay for 2 hook-ups even though I would only be able to use 1 hook-up at any given time.

That's just way too much. I'll just stick to my crappy-to-non-existent AM ESPN Radio reception and my massive CD collection.

You could get the Roady2 for around 129...it comes with a wireless fm transmitter..you wouldnt need anything else to use it in the car. If you want to be able to use it in another car, you would want to get an extra antenna, and maybe cigarette lighter adapter...you can install it yourself in literally 5 minutes..since installation basically means finding a place in your to run the antenna wire.

Also, for the roady2, they are coming out with a walkman type deal...you slip your roady2 into it, and then you can take it anywhere..gym, running, etc..


I have had it for almost 3 years now i guess, and love it...

Do you have the subscription to Phil Hendries website? My brother gets it for my every March for my bday..think its around 50 bucks per year..well worth it though...in case you didnt know...every day, you can download the previous days show, broken down into 3 COMMERCIAL FREE mp3 files...he leaves them up on the site for 30 days, so that you have enough time to grab them..

that way you can listen to them in your Rio, Ipod, etc...whenever you want...without commercials, the show is 3 38 minute files..i think i have every show from the last 2 years or so burned to cd for my archives..

That's $100 right there (without the unit itself). That's for the Skyfi.

I guess for the Roady, all of that comes in the package for $130. But as I understand it, you have to have the cigarette adapter no matter what, right? So, factoring in the $30 rebate for the Skyfi, the difference is about $70 for the equipment. But that's just for one car.

Plus, there are other factors mitigating against it for me...where to install it in each car (I don't see any place that is convenient), the fact that when we go on trips, my daughter's DVD player uses the cigarette lighter, etc.

I don't know, maybe this just isn't for me. Or maybe I'll just wait until I buy a car that comes with it built-in.

As far as Sirius goes, I got a Sanyo one that comes with everything. Fm transmitter built in, car and home antenna, wires to wire it up to your home stereo, simple little stand for the house, for the car it has a nice little adjustable arm on a suction cup that sticks like a mofo.

I have been taking it in and out of the house, car, and my truck while working the last two days. It takes me 2-3 minutes to set it up, take it down. The car antenna just slaps up on the roof. My only problem is that I need to set something up for my truck since the body is fiberglass and it will not stick.

This cost $150. And I think earlier you mentioned ESPN, Sirius has ESPN, ESPNews, Sports Byline, NFL Radio (24 hours NFL talk, I love it.), and one or two other sports stations. They had on MNF the other night and a bunch of basketball games too.
