I am currently playing a solo league and am about to come up to my off-season with a couple of roster decisions to make. I do not want to take advantage of the computer AI, but am not too sure how the computer AI would handle this situation, so I am asking some advice from some of you who have played a lot of careers thus far.

I had to make a decision about which DE to sign this season. I chose to sign John Abraham over Shaun Ellis, who I do like a lot, but Abraham has outplayed him. I do not have the cap room to sign both to long term deals, however, I do have some options so I do not lose out on Ellis' worth and get nothing. Would I be taking advantage of the computer AI to tag him a franchise player then trade him for picks or players? I know the computer teams would make the deal, however, would they then renegotiate and sign him to a long term deal or he would play out his one year than be a FA. If that was to happen I feel I would be cheating the game. What do you think I should do?

I'd go ahead and tag him and trade him.

i doubt the AI team you trade him to will rework his contract. chances are he'll become a free agent, but you never know.

The old answer to this would have been that the computer is horrible about renegotiating/retaining players. So bad, in fact, that I stopped trading people with only one year left on their contract because it was an exploit - the AI never resigned them. But, this has apparently been improved in 5.1b. I've not tried it out, and I also would be interested to hear if the AI teams will now renegotiate/retain in these circumstances.

I was working through a historical career and Dan Marino was entering the final season of his contract. He wanted way more money than I could ever before so I dealt him for the right to draft Brett Favre. The AI Vikings than resigned him for a multi-year deal and he is still there 7 years later.
