Rams get the big play early and then waste a T.O. like they always do.

Nice use of two time outs.

Well, I guess they did get the TD.

I don't see enough to overturn that. Rams clock management always lives up to the criticism. Unreal.

That clock management was Jet-like.

Maurice Morris, Chester SC just got his head ripped off... I used play him in basketball during gym... He dunked on me many times.

Dutch
01-08-2005, 05:11 PM
That was lame. The CB barely touched the WR's head and it negates a sack and gives the Rams a first down. I appreciate offenses, but I'd rather see a good defensive game if the only way to spark an offense is to give them free first downs. Just lame.

Let me tell you, in The National Football League, let me tell you this, we talked to Bobby Engram on Friday, and he said he hadn't cut his fingernails in weeks especially so he could hold onto the ball.

And the Seahawks need to fire their receivers coach.

cthomer5000

What the fuck did Hasselbeck just do? Way to blow a 4th down play, Matt!
what? was he supposed to be Engram's hands on that play as well?

Pumpy Tudors
01-08-2005, 06:58 PM
I agree that Engram should have caught the ball, but I didn't like the way Hasselbeck handled everything up until the throw. He looked panicked the whole time. To me, it looked like the reason he had nowhere to go was because he was trying not to cross the line of scrimmage. He saw the 5-yard-line, jumped back, and then heaved the pass. If he had committed to a run after stepping up and made one cut to his right, he had a chance to dive at the end zone. I admit that I was harsh in saying that he blew the play, because the play ended up in Engram's hands (literally), but I think Hasselbeck had a better shot with a run.

cthomer5000
01-08-2005, 06:59 PM
I disagree Pumpy.

He looked to run, then one of the Rams D-Lineman seemed to jump out of nowhere, and was immediately in his face. He then shuffled to his right a bit while making what was a pretty solid throw.

Engram's gotta catch that ball.

cthomer5000

All in all, a pretty good start to my favorite weekend of football.

And how awful is Jevon Kearse in this Pepsi Wild Cherry ad?

temley06
01-08-2005, 07:02 PM
An NFL reciever has got to make that catch.

Travis
01-08-2005, 07:02 PM
Pumpy, simply, no he didn't. He would have been cut down by the 3 yard line, maybe been able to force himself to the 2, but he wouldn't have picked up the 1st down, never mind the touchdown. There were 4 or 5 Rams between Hass and the endzone, at least 2 on either side of midfield, but still inside the hashes, he wasn't going to pick up enough blocking to make it through.

I didn't like the playcall, haven't liked much in the way of the playcalling on either side of the ball all year, but simple fact was, Engram had the ball hit his hands in the endzone and he couldn't hang on to force (hopefully) O.T.

Lots of changes coming to Seattle in this offseason, sad way to finish what was supposed to be such a promising year.

What a great game. Go Rams! Good start to the NFL playoffs once again. Hats off to Matt Hasselbeck for playing a great game.

Pumpy Tudors
01-08-2005, 07:03 PM
To everyone who thinks Hasselbeck had nowhere to go, I certainly see where you're all coming from. I know he's not one of those "mobile" quarterbacks, but he looked ready to run and then stopped. I know it's easy to say now, but I still think he could've run with it if he had committed.

Again, I was harsh for initially putting the blame on him. To be honest, I typed that out before I saw the replay. At full speed, it looked like a poor decision and a bad throw. I didn't even consider that Engram had just plain dropped the pass. Of course, by the time I'd posted, I saw the replay, and then it was obvious that Engram was the real goat on that play. The only comment I can really stick with is that I still think Hasselbeck could've gotten to the goal line with a run and a dive.

It's because the hole he was about to take suddenly had a 300 lb guy in it. That's what caused his entire move towards his right.

The Seattle receivers cannot catch. It should never come down to the QB who can't run very well, running for the TD. Hasselbacks strengths is his ability to be a good QB, not a good RB. The WR's should have made catches all day that they failed to do.

But whatever, there's a lot of talent in Seattle, but something is terribly wrong and I can't put my finger on it.

Clarification on Philip Rivers...

The Chargers gave him a 14.25 million dollar bonus on a 6 year deal. That leaves 11.875 million of cap charge hanging out there.

If they traded him before June 1st, they would take a 11.875 million cap hit in 2005.
If they traded him after June 1st, they would take a 5.9375 million cap hit in 2005, and a 5.9375 cap hit in 2006.

In summary, no way they trade him.

Now the question is, what to do with Brees?

The options as I see it:

Let him walk. Public Relations disaster as well as leaving you without an unproven QB (unless we're talking about Doug Flutie)
Franchise him and trade him. You get something for him, but you again leave yourself without an unproven QB and still might piss off the fans.
Franchise him and sign him to a long-term deal. The major drawback is clogging up a ton of money at the QB position between Brees and Rivers. This would probably become unmanageble in 2-3 years. Definitely an option though.
Franchise him, let him try to duplicate his success, then make your decision in 2006. Probably the safest from the team perspective, but he costs you 9 million against the 2005 cap and you have a problem if he holds out.

cthomer5000
01-08-2005, 08:06 PM

Can somebody explain this "free kick" thing to me? Madden and Michaels didn't do a very good job, and I'm confused.Any time a fair catch is called, the team recieving the ball has the option of a 'free kick.'

A free kick is the holder, the kicker, and no one else on the field. Other than that it is a regular field goal attempt.

The one super-cool wrinkle is that even if a team fair catches the ball with no time remaining, they are still entitled to a free kick.

Easily my favorite of the obscure rules, and the Jets butchering the clock and not playing defense on 3rd down just cost them a free shot at 3 points.

Well, the Jets receivers as a whole were kind of MIA this year. Also, I think McCareins had the general 'first year on a new team' effect going for him. Almost every single receiver disappoints in his first year with his team. Year after year.

The Jets have to punt here... so I expect a pooch punt if they stay in field goal formation. Just way too risky. They only need to think back to last week for an example of how a long field goal attempt can screw you in a close game.

I do think that 'conventinal logic' is the goat here. When you're carving through a defense, why not just keep going?

And no, I don't ever recall an instance where a kick on 3rd down actually benefitted anyone. I was just thinking how awesome a *fake* field goal on 3rd down would be though. No way anyone would see it coming in such a situation (when the game is on the line).

Once, I forget who it was but ther was a bad snap and while the holder wasn't able to throw the ball away he did eat it for a loss but still well within range for the kick on 4th down.

Shottenheimer cost his team that game. What the hell is up with three straight ultra conservative calls that are going nowhere to lead to a 4th down field goal attempt that was no closer than 1st down. Hell, lets make the rookie kicker try one from 40 instead of maybe trying to knock that down to 30. He should be used to this kind of pressure, right?

With that idiotic play by Barton at the end of the game it would have been oh so sweet to see the Chargers win that game.

Georgia - Georgia Tech, back in... er... 2000? The "Jaspar Thanks" game. Winning FG attempt in OT on third down. Tech lines up for the FG, Georgia blocks it but the ball stays behind the line - George Godsey (holder) catches the block in the air, advances the ball a few yards. Fourth down kick is good, ballgame.

I have to say I really nailed how this game would play out. I said that both defenses would keep the running backs in check, leaving it up to QB vs. QB. They both played good enough that the game came down to special teams.
