for my wife and my family. Earlier today, she developed a significant headache (she has had frequent headaches over the past few months) and her left eye started drooping. I took her to our primary care doctor who immediately sent her to the ER next door to his office. She has had a CT Scan which didn't show anything. Based on the clinical picture, we know she did not have a stroke. She is 26 and generally healthy, but this has me scared to death. I know too much. It's good because I know the doctors did an excellent job taking care of her today, but it's bad because I know most of the differential for a 3rd nerve palsy which is what she has on her left side, and I don't like any of the possibilities. 9 hours after arriving, she just was moved up to a bed on the neuro ward, and she insisted I come home and get some sleep because my snoring in the chair next to her was going to keep her up, but I know it's going to be hard for me to sleep tonight. Also, I feel guilty for not staying there all night even though she insisted I come home.

Tomorrow morning they are going to do an MRI with contrast, and I'm quite worried about what will be found. For anyone so inclined, I appreciate the prayers. Thanks.

My wife who is an ER nurse says it could be a Bels Palsy situation. It affects the facial nerves and does go away after a time period. Migraines can also cause eye problems.

Best of luck to you and your family!

Same thing happened to my ex-g/f. Her face was frozen on one side for a few weeks (she said. I didn't know her then.)

God Bless her. Try and get some sleep.

Dear god. I can only begin to imagine how horrifying this must be for you (and Mrs. Eaglesfan27). I fear words will provide little comfort for you right now, but please know that I'll be thinking of the two of you.

And while it may prove impossible, I'd suggest you listen to your wife's counsel and try to get some sleep. You're probably in for another roller coaster tomorrow, and it'll be all the more trying for both of you if you're exhausted. Easier said than done, I know.

Hang in there EF27. I'm not a praying person, but I'll do what I can and think some happy, hopeful thoughts in your direction.

Last year (I was 26), I started to have frequent headaches too. Can't say if my eye drooped at all (I live pretty much an isolated life, so who knows what I look like to other people most of the time. :) ) but after many blood tests, a CT scan, visits to the neurologist, it turns out (at least the neurolgist says) to be migranes.

i'm not a religious person, so to say i would pray wouldn't be fair to either of us. but what i can say is that she sounds to be in excellent hands, and from everything i can tell from this board she has an excellent husband. with your career i know that you can only naturally think worst case scenario, but just try and keep a positive outlook. don't feel guilty, and if you need anything you know theres a bunch of people willing to help here.

i wish her a clean bill of health, and i wish you the best night you can possibly have under the circumstances.

sorry again for what you're having to deal with,

I will be thinking about you and your family, and hoping for the best.

This does concern me greatly, so I would be most interested in what is discovered. My wife has complained of headaches a lot in recent times, focused mainly behind one of her eyes. No other symptoms, but the way that suddenly happened to your wife is scary.

Hoping that it might provide you a little bit of comfort, I will relay a similar experience that I just went through. A couple days before this Christmas, I got a really bad headache. It was the second one I'd had in a couple weeks. I've always been prone to headaches, but these were worse than usual. Still, the headache went away for the most part after 8 hours or so, but on Christmas day I noticed that my left eyelid was droopy and my pupils were very different in size. After checking out the symptoms on the internet, my wife and I decided to go to the hospital, since there were all sorts of scary things associated with my symptoms, and the websites recommended seeking treatment immediately.

At the hospital on Christmas night, I had a CAT scan that came back normal, and then a few days later I had an MRI. It all came back normal, so the diagnosis is just migraines. Apparently, migraines can cause all sorts of things like different-sized pupils, drooping eyelids, etc. The neurologist said the symptoms would go away when the migraine finally went away totally (which it didn't for a couple of weeks), and the symptoms have gone away now for the most part. But in the first days, especially that first night, my wife and I were pretty scared about aneurysms, brain tumors, and other stuff like that, which was pretty scary, so I can relate to how you must feel. But it all turned out okay, and I'm hoping that your wife's problems will turn out to be something similar. Annoying but basically harmless headaches.

My thoughts will be with you, and I hope you have good news for us soon.

First of all, thank you all for the kind thoughts and words.

Secondly, I just finished getting her comfortable at home and she is doing well. It was a long 8-9 hours at the hospital today, but the news was worth it. They did an MRI, MRA, and an initial CT scan which all show no abnormalities. They think it could be atypical Bell's Palsy (which was definitely on my list of possibilities.) I say atypical because she doesn't have the definitive area of paralysis of the distribution of the 7th cranial nerve. It's also possible that it is due to atypical migraines he said. Finally, there is a slim possibility it is Myasthenia Gravis. He took some blood work to test for that as we left the hospital, but he doesn't think it is that (nor do I.)

The good news is we know it is not a tumor, aneurism, or Multiple Sclerosis. She'll follow up with the neurologist in 7-10 days, but he is treating her for Bell's Palsy for now since that is the most likely diagnosis which means she will be on Steroids and an antiviral for the next 10 days.

I am heartened to hear that there is nothing serious shown. I am reminded what happened to me about a year ago when I came down to severe headaches and dizzyness. It was eventually found that I had developed (quite a while ago) and had since enlarged a tumor on the acoustic nerve. The problem was it was sitting right next to the "balance" nerve near the brain stem (causing the acute headaches and dizzyness). But the Lord was gracious to me in that the long operation and recovery was successful and I pray for continued "atypicalness" in your wife and that nothing serious would ever develop.

Eaglesfan,
Getting to this late, but I hope that things continue to improve and it's simply Bell's Palsy. A frightening thing, certainly, but easily the best neurological condition to have if that's what it is.

On a random side note, you've described of course the exact problem that most docs have as patients themselves or when their family members are patients: they know too much for their own good. Just being an EMT I've caught myself self-diagnosing (well based on that and previous experience) and thinking too hard when things aren't feeling quite right. It's one of the downfalls of the job, I guess, but hang in there!

Well after just 2 days of steroids her headache is much improved and her eye is occasionally popping open all the way. The muscles are still weak and, her eye is still drooping most of the time but she is feeling better already which is good. :)

The only downside is the steroids are upsetting her stomach and she has another 11 days of them. However, the dose starts lowering in a few days and it shouldn't be so bad.
