From a report I read earlier, about 500 houses and 300 mobile homes were evacuated at 5am this morning.

Santa Ana River goes right down the heart of Orange County, including Anaheim, Santa Ana and the "OC's" Newport Beach. In fact, it runs right between Angel Stadium and the Pond.

More to the point, though, Corona is on the dam side of the Santa Ana river valley, which narrows sharply between Riverside and Orange counties (and the freeway that runs through it considered one of the worst traffic logjams in the U.S.). On the Orange County side of that valley are the ritzy Anahim Hills and Yorba Linda (of Nixon fame) communities--and one of my jobs. In fact, I cross over the Santa Ana river whenever I am going to work at Friday's, and late on Saturday night (including tomorrow night), I ride along the bike trails along the river for most of the way to the late night bus stop I catch, several miles ride.

So if the dam breaks Saturday night and sweeps into Oraneg County, and you guys don't hear from me, you know what happened. ;)

Seriously, though, I'm not too worried (although I certainly do hope the residents of Corona will be okay, which is made all the worse by the fact I work with and know several people who live there).

The Army Corp of Engineers just happened to already be assigned to the dam. They are/were in the process of increasing the height and renovating it.

I used to live about 3 miles from the dam.

"Any other questions?"

"Yeah, where is the dam bait?"

Sorry, I like that line and use it frequently.
