Anyone else seen this yet? I'm very torn on wether I thought it was even good, let alone top 10 material. It was just an odd film.

The story it is based on is great. I haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't know how much of it was changed from the real story.
I would suggest the book it comes from "Rope Burns" as very good reading.

Clint Eastwood directed?

Ooh, ooh, can I vote it for the Oscar?

I really want to see it, but the girlfriend doesn't want to. I think I'm going to have to promise her a chick flick if I ever want to see it...

Are you talking about the pilates or the month she spent with Julia Roberts at the Carrot Farm.

Tell her I told you it was a chick flick. I'm a 29 year old male pervert into Football and things that make me bleed and I cried like a little girl numerous times in this movie, including the entire 3rd act. But i'm still not sure I liked it.

does Hillary get naked in this movie? not that i'd go see it, but if it ever came out on cable i'd probably swank off to it if it had female nudity.

She didn't, but I did, something about watching people workout makes me wanna strip down and feel my muscles.

Now I'm a big Eastwood fan, but the bandwagon is building on this, and unfortunately it looks like Scorcese will get screwed out of another Oscar yet again because of it. Only to be topped by him losing to Costner in 89 (sorry, but Dances With Wolves shouldn't even be shown in the same theater as Goodfellas).

I'm not one to pretend to know what a better directing job is, but I will say this, The Aviator was a better film than Million Dollar Baby IMO, but The Woodsmen was better than them both.

I really liked the movie. Of course, you could put Morgan Freeman in a rabbit suit and make him hop around on camera and I'd probably see the movie.

FWIW, I haven't seen Sideways or The Aviator. I liked Closer a little better than Million Dollar Baby.

I finally saw this movie tonight. I will definitely be pulling for it on Oscar night. Chris Rock is hosting the show, so that makes at least the beginning appointment TV.

Outstanding meditation on the costs of love, guilt, and responsibility. And of course redemption.

I thought this movie was great. I liked the Aviator, but MDB was clearly better to me. The Aviator just bogs down so badly in the last third, not quite as dramatically as say Goodfellas, but is at least 30 minutes too long. I really just wanted it to end.

is this movie based on a true story?

The movie is based on a short story from the book Rope Burns. It's technically not a true individual story, but I believe most of the characters are based on actual people the author, F.X. Toole, knew, and he mixed them together into the story.

Aww man, closer was horendous. A non-sensical plot, stilted acting and everything. The only good part was Natalie Portman in a thong. I normally like movies void of any sense of real morality and generally exploitative towards sex and cursing, but this was so over the top and stupid that I hated it.

Loved Hotel Rwanda, a beautifully done movie.

Million Dollar baby was ok. I found it pretty humorous and generally good until the end. The end just felt stupid to me, the whole premise of it. I understood the reasons why everything occured, but the manner in which it played out made no sense to me whatsoever. That came pretty close to ruining it for me, and I'm not really an Eastwood movie fan (and despise Hillary Swank), but I almost overcame that distaste, but the ending was just ass. Also, the horrible southern accents just ruined it. That alone should have kept it from winning the Oscars, but the Academy has their heads so far up their prickish ass that they have no idea what good acting/accents should sound like.

Just rented it this weekend, and I was disappointed. Wasn't a bad movie, but I guess I was expecting more from a consensus 'top movie of the year'. Were some good moments, but the end seemed to drag out.

I can see what you mean there. I thought this was a boxing movie, not more of a life story, when I started watching. Once I changed my thinking though, I enjoyed the rest. But for a few minutes, I was thinking the same thing.

That's a good point. Once the boxing stuff endend, I sorta lost interest - maybe I went in with the wrong expectations.

I need to learn my lesson.

Just saw Million Dollar Baby and somewhat enjoyed it, but the best picture raised the bar way to high with this one. I hated Sideways, was bored by the Aviator, and Portman thong withstanding found nothing interesting about Closer. And don't even get me started on Lost in Translation. When am I going to figure out that I obviously am not smart enough to get the movies I am supposed to and quit renting them!?! I liked I Robot and think War of the Worlds would be right up my alley.

(This post was not even meant to be sarcastic either. I understand the blockbusters are formulatic and there is some sort of art in the ones that get nominated for best picture. But I just didn't get any of last year's nominees)

Finally watched this tonight.

I thought it was very good but not great. A little predictable in parts but overall it did what it was supposed to. My wife cried alot.

As for the Oscar talk I thought Sideways was a better movie.

The "John Adams" seriers was what opened my eyes to his awesomeness. "Sideways" was a great movie too.

one thing with Giamatti is he tends to "overact". i use that term for certain performaces where the actor does such a great job selling the character but doesn't know when to dial it down a notch. you can tell he's very devoted to his craft. that's more of a fault of the director though, for not reigning in his actors. i don't like to say "over the top", cuz that insinuates bad acting, just some of Giamatti's mannerisms and expressions or whathaveyou - at times i can look at Giamatti and say "i'm watching an actor act", rather than being so drawn in by a performance that i forget i'm looking at a movie. he's still tops in my book, though. excellent talent.

I thought Million Dollar Baby was pretty mediocre. Definitely one of the poorer "Best Pictures" in quite awhile. Must have been a lousy year for movies.

I thought it was outstanding and it's definitely one of the better Best Pictures in quite awhile. Excellent writing, directing, and acting. Eastwood and Freeman team up for Unforgiven and it wins the Best Picture Oscar. They team up again for Million Dollar Baby and it wins the Best Picture Oscar. Any film those two are in together deserves the Best Picture Oscar. Million Dollar Baby is a masterpiece and definitely deserved all of the awards it received.

I also thought Million Dollar Baby was excellent. I think the acting by Eastwood, especially in the last half hour to hour of the movie was superb and elevated it.

FWIW, the other Best Picture nominees that year were "The Aviator", "Finding Neverland", "Ray", and "Sideways". "Hotel Rwanda" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" were also released that year.

On IMDB, Million Dollar Baby has a rating of 8.2/10, which makes it the #127 on the Top 250. And on Rotten Tomatoes it got 92% fresh and 95% by the 'Top Critics'.

I suspect I'm in a group of one, but I thought "Finding Neverland" was the best of this group by a good margin. Not to say that the others are dogs.
