From the HOI2 forum.
NOTE: There will not be any gulags or deathcamps (including POW camps) to build in Hearts of Iron2, nor will there be the ability to simulate the Holocaust or systematic purges, so I ask you not to discuss these topics as they are not related to this game. Thank You.
NOTE: Strategic bombing in HoI2 will be abstracted and not allow you to terror bomb civilians specifically. Chemical weapons will also not be included in the game. Any threads that complain about this issue will be closed without discussion.
NOTE: There will not be any swastikas in the game, because it IS illegal to show them in Germany and various other countries. Same goes for other Nazi symbols (e.g. related to the SS) or Nazi propaganda material, including songs etc. Any links posted to a mod which includes a Swastika or other illegal Nazi symbols will be deleted. Any threads that complain about this issue will be closed.
Anyone discussing any of the above items on this board is liable to be banned
These rules aren't up for discussion and will be applied as they are.

I actually enjoyed reading some of the threads over there on the subject of the game being banned in China. Was interesting reading some of the people from Chinas view on their government and its history. Some of the debates it caused had me read up more on the history of China.

All forms of killing should be embraced in the gaming community, not locked up in the hope chest of the past.

Frankly, I expected this thread to have that pic of whatever little English weenie that was with Skydog's head from the patriotic undies pic cut-and-pasted on.

I've bitched about it, but not in a thread of its own. Someone should start one. It just seems to me that banning swastikas like this is just some sort of bury your head in the sand censorship. It doesn't matter what it stood for at one time, we shouldn't be afraid of it now.

I hate it when they restrict my killing options in a game.
I remember having fun on Master of Orion 2, conquering planets only to committ genocide against the helpless inhabitents. Good times.
Don't look at me like that! The damn ant-people were inferior to my race of supercats! They deserved to be marched into my large-magnifying-glass-chamber!

I think the situation is different in Germany than it is here.
What's the deal with the British royalty comment?

One of the princes dressed as a Nazi officer for a private costume party. Someone took his picture and sold it to one of the newspapers.

I used to play a game called Shadow President where I abused the game by bombing the hell out of Canada until my whole cabinet resigned and I got assassinated. Fun! Plus I used to illegally shoot unarmed criminals for kicks in the Police Quest series.
But I'm really a nice guy.

I kept trying to be nice in Rome: Total War, but the cities kept revolting the turn after I conquered them. Gameplay made me do it...

I remember seeing a guy dressed as Hitler one Halloween in the French Quarter (New Orleans) about ten years ago. Without much thought I fllipped him the stiff-arm salute and walked into the bar he was standing next to. A Jewish guy I was with didn't find the costume so amusing and had to be physically restrained from attacking him.

Btw, tonight is the first night of the PBS Holocaust doc Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State. 9 pm EST...be sure to watch, I think it will be good. Traveled to Auschwitz last year and was profoundly moved by the experience.

In the original Reach for the Stars you could build factories on planets that were too inhospitable for the workers to survive very long. I remember queuing up factory workers in orbiting space ships, so they could quickly replace the casualties on the planet's surface. So it wasn't quite a death camp more like a death planet.
In any case the abstraction of the negative population growth made for more than a few chuckles back then.

If I can't indiscriminately terror bomb random civilians, then I don't want to play the game. Give me GTA any day. ;)

You can wipe out the populations of entire cities in R:TW, of course.
(I think you could do that in Civ at one point too?)
edit: err, I guess gstelmack already mentioned R:TW...

Seriously though, i don't see that much of a difference between reenacting random senseless violence(GTA) and reenacting targeted violence(concentration camps). Either way you are killing fake people. You either feel like crap that the real thing happens or you don't. That its acceptable to possibly trivalize one action and not the other makes no sense to me.

In Civ, you can choose to burn a city to the ground instead of taking it over.
Are movies like Indiana Jones (which prominently displays swastikas) allowed in Germany? Are they edited?
Recently there was a skinhead recruiting rally at the park and community center where I workout. They then apparently went door to door in the surrounding neighborhood to spread the word. I didn't go workout that day, though.

The svastikas are allowed in Germany just for "entertaiment" purpouses (HOI2 isnīt funny they thought).
For Spanish players the problem was worse. Our game has the nazis banners inside, but one day the moderators told us that we have to modify all ours AARS since they had svastikas (as the game has)...

Skydog is only a dictator sometimes. Usually, he's just cocky, funny, and patriotic.
