Is Galactic Civilizations a lot like the Civilizations series? Although Civilizations III seems like a good game, I didn't like the fact that you were limited to a certain number of turns? I was thinking about picking up Galactic Civilizations & its expansion pack Altarian Prophecy. GalCiv II is supposed to be released soon as well.

Any feedback in GalCiv is appreciated. Thanks.

I was a big fan- the AI actually works, unlike Civ3, and does not cheat -each Civilization has its own AI written for it, so you don't neccessarily have the all against one crap in Civ3. I think its well worth it IMO- I havent picked up Altarian Philosophy, but I spent a good 2 months enthralled with the game.

I personally couldn't get into it at all. I know some folks here did, though.

What do you mean by limited turns. Civilization goes for a long time before you run out of turns. I am not sure if GalCiv has a limit or not.

Does it use the same turn based action as Civ III? I mean, does it have a limit on how many turns you can have?

I just bought Civ III a few days ago. I played Civ II before ( for a short time). I noticed that you only get a certain amount of turns. Hmm, maybe there was an option that I forgot to turn off or something...

edit: I meant that I just bought Civ III not Civ II

It's been a while, but I think that Civ ends sometimes in the 2000s, but since you start in BCs, you don't reach the end of the game for a long time. None of my games ever reached that point.

Now each "piece" can only move so far each turn and in that way it is different than Rise of Nations or other RTS games. GalCiv works the same way in that each unit can move so far each turn.

I love Rise Of Nations. Its not as hard as I thought it would be.

I also have Rome:Total War but I am waiting for the patch to be released for it. I like RTW alot ( < that ones for SkyDog :) ) and am even thinking about downloading the realism mod for it.

LOL. Yea well lets see. I have FOF2004 (which is a very serious sim for me- meaning I spend a lot of time with it). I also have TCY (but I just sim through it to get the draft picks). I have and play Rise Of Nations, play Rome:Total War sometimes. Civ III I havne't played much of since I got into RON so much. I also beta test for Supreme Ruler:2010, which is just an amazing war game. I used to race online a lot with NASCAR Racing Season 2003 but I haven't got much time lately.... :o .

I have other such as The Operational Art Of War (another war game) and all of the Operation Flashpoint games.

The creators of Civ and Gal Civ are not the same, mind you.

Yea, I knew that but I read in a review that they play the same.

Sort of.

Galciv plays more like MOO.

I would love to talk to jbmagic on the phone someday. Seriously.

Anyway, I played a lot of GalCiv for a couple of days (yeah, I know, not too long), and I enjoyed it. I just don't have the attention span to stick with any game for a grand amount of time. I could see what they were doing with the game, and I did have fun with it. I have the totalgaming.net subscription, so I could download the expansion anytime. If I feel like I want to try putting some more time and thought into the game, I'll definitely go back to it.

Just a note: More like MOO2, not MOO3. :)

There was quite a lengthy discussion about GalCiv back when it came out. A VERY good game if you like 4X types of games. Easily the best Space 4X out there (and I play just about all of them).

Dumb question but what exactly is "4X"? What does that mean? I read that in an IGN review too and I never knew what it meant.

4x - eXploration, eXpansion, eXploitation, eXtermination.

Gal Civ is pretty cool, although for some reason I'm more naturally 'at ease' with planet based games than space sims .... dunno why really ...

Ufff Maximus you wrote the forbiden words "Operation Flashpoint" damn i feel the urge to install it again, one of the best games ever in my opinion, even better with the mods like the world war II one. Realistic tactic but with action at same time. I have heard that they are working on OFPII but never saw any advance on that.

Gal Civ is a fine game, but it got boring real quick. I think it would have had more life if they would allow multi-player (2nd version may have this, IIRC).

I also dislike how they try to forcefeed their entire product line down your throat with the stardock thingamajig.
