My 3rd season

Sitting in my boat, just fishing, I couldn't help but think about the past 2 seasons, ending like they have. My 1st season ended in a major skid, as the high of a new coach wore off, and I couldn't keep the kids focused.

The end of my 2nd season, we started to mesh, and sync up, have that proper synergy, if you would, and we ended in a major romp over lowly Alabama-Birmingham.

The problem now is, will the school keep me on, with a 3rd losing season in a row. I don't think they will, and honestly, I don't plan on losing to much this season.

The team saw a glimmer of how well they could be, beating some talented teams out there. They know they have to focus, they have to apply themselves.

Back in the office

Getting back to the office, and starting to work, I sift and sort through my paper work.

Looking at the academic problems this next season, it looks like DE Andre Bailey and WR Ernie Cochrane will be suspended, I told them, now they have to live with it.

The painful part was signing the letters of transfer for QB Artie Peterson and WR Danny Wallace. But they were not to happy with how hard the school could be, I wished them luck, and I plan on keeping my eyes on both.

We lost another scout though, Ian McGee, our Southwest Regional Scout, was offered a job with Texas. He was a former graduated from there, and wanted to head back to his alma mater, so I encouraged it.

As to the talent out there, I did not have much to choose from, but I think the man I signed on board will do a good job, he might be retiring soon, but I will be looking for someone better as well. Byron Ackerman is the new Southwest Regional Scout.

Looking at our schedule we have 1 week to fill and the only openings we have weeks 1,4,7,12, and 15. I am looking for a patsy team for week 1 at home, I need to boost some confidence and do it right off the bat.

I pick up the phone, and start dialing. It took me a bit, and a lot of nasty negotiations and name callings happened. I was finally able to book a game, but it was for week 15. We are playing Shelbyville @ home on the 15th.

So our schedule this season is:

Team Thoughts

Sitting with my coordinators, and looking at our talent the decisions have been made.

Offensively, we are going to focus on a Spread, Run and Shoot style of offense, playing the game just right, to let Drake and soon Appel shine.

Defensively, until the talent comes of age on the interior line, we are looking at running a 5-0 or 3-4, it will mainly be a 3-4, but stepping up to a 5-0 when we need to stop a run heavy team.

Week 1 Overview

As we move forward, and start looking at what our needs are going to be next season, there is an immediate need for DT, OLB, T, WR, and S.

The WR spot should be opened up more as we modify our offensive gameplan to the spread.

Freshman WR Ogden will be playing on the opposite side of the ball from Emmons, we should see some growth out there.

No game on Week 1, as it is a bye.

Week 2 Overview

We welcome Hawaii into the Liberty Bowl, where we are currently 6 point favorites.

The time has come to see if some of the changes we have made will work or not.

The recruiting isn't looking to good already. Alot of players are testy towards us. We will see.

Looks like this offense was built for Carlos Carruth and Melvin Drake. The two big WR's of Emmons and Ogden definately opened the field up for us.

Defensively, it looked like all of last years recruits played well, and they are easily showing us a glimmer of what I hope is a good year.

No signings or refusals to talk about yet. Although I am thinking it is going well for us, as a few of the players are starting to loosen up to us, as we try to enter their realm.

We are looking at signing

3 DT
4 OLB

Our backup kicker isn't good at all, think of the guy off The Replacements, but make him suck really, really bad.

First off, the gameplanning for last week was great, and I have encouraged the staff to focus like that.

Around town, people are liking what is happening, although judgement will be held until we have a winning season underneath me.

We are travelling to Mississippi State as 4 point underdogs. It looks like the win against Hawaii woke someone in Vegas up.

Offensively, Carlos Carruth is still the man, and if we can keep Drake tossing for 300+ yards, we should do well. Emmons was injured in this game, thus only the 4 receptions he had, but they were for big gains. Perkins stepped up and proved he could be a solid receiver as well.

Defensively, JJ Urban lead the team, and has turned into quite the leader. He is only a sophmore and looking at becoming even better.

Week 4 Overview

Good thing we get a week off. Mississippi State beat on us pretty bad. Even though it was a game we should have one, physically, they whipped on us.

This bye week, we will focus on healing or injuries, bumps, and bruises. We will also play a little, let some of the fun that we are supposed to be having seep in.

Week 4 Injury Report

In my weekly meetings with the trainers they break some bad news to us.

WR Darrell Emmons will be out for 7 weeks due to a seperated shoulder
DE Lewis Teppers will be out for 4 weeks due to a hyperextended knee

Now, the Emmons part hurts, as we were just coming into our own on proving that we can run this offense well.

Week 4 Recruiting Report

Nothing to be concerned of. We have invited several more ILB's to visit, and we are waiting on some results of other recruits before we offer some scholarships.

Week 5 Overview

Travelling to Houston to play this week, and we turn into 12 point underdogs. I like being the underdog. It helps, I hope to hell they are not paying attention to us, and listening to the media.

Week 5 Injury Report

Trainers have reported the updates on:

WR Darrell Emmons will be out for 6 weeks due to a seperated shoulder
DE Lewis Teppers will be doubtful for 3 weeks due to a hyperextended knee

I have to say, we were physically dominated out on the field by Houston, however, they are now home to cheap shot artists. I will know the extent of the injuries caused this game, and I will be providing game film to the conference, and the NCAA.

There is no excuse for that kind of play.

I don't know what to do to avoid seasons like these. We are taking a beating, Drake is hurting, Appel has had his redshirt pulled just in case.

It's looking like the class of Emmons and Drake have slight injury problems.

Week 8 Overview

We welcome a conference 3-0 Eastern Carolina team into the Liberty Bowl. We are 15 point underdogs, and with the thrashing we took last week, I can see why.

All I can as of the players are to give me 4 full quarters, 100% energy, and try their best.

Your recruiting is looking like mine. :)

How are your coaches rated in injury avoidance? I went out and got an "excellent" OC this year and it has helped. The only bug injuries have been to the defense... my DC is only rated "fair".

1-4 Army came into town, and we were able to beat them, it was a tough game, and we were only 2 point favorites.

The guys can sense my frustration, and it did seep out on the practice field this week a bit. I know we have the talent, these injuries keep me frustrated though.

Week 9 Recruiting Report

We have our first commitment this week.

S Harold Lewis 5'11" 165 lbs
Nansemond River High School
Suffolk, Virginia
3.45 GPA
1172 Test Score

Scout Report from Jumbo Seller (Terrible With DB's)
Strength: Intercepting Passes
Weakness: Defending the Run

Ranked 724th overall nationally
Ranked 31st at his position nationally
Ranked 18th overall in his state
Ranked 1st at his position in his state

Nice first recruit, he will immediately shore up the saftey spot next season, and if he is as good as I think he is. We will do well there.

In 9 games he has 67 tackles, 3 sacks, and 13 INT's. He was also just named to the All State team.

We also had several more players decide on other schools

S Courtney Lee - Chattanooga
CB Donald Nobile - California
OLB Terrell Lester - Miami of Ohio
DT Ronald Buckner - Toledo
DE Calvin Jackson - South Florida
T Zack Gardner - Troy
WR Paul Denson - Union City

Week 10 Overview

We head to 32nd ranked TCU as 21 point underdogs this week. We were able to show a glimmer of what we can be when we focus. But then again, we are weak on the front 4. Our LB's and DB's are fine, but when we are not able to get the pressure on the QB, it hurts us deep down the field.

WR Les Matthews was released from the team this week. His grades had been porous, he had told Coach Torres to fuck off, and then he managed to pick a fight in the locker room with a DL. The kid has issues, and was not needed on the squad.

Carlos Carruth sat out most of practice, but on gameday, he came to me saying he was ready to play, he was about 80% but that was good enough for us.

Besides, we generated shit on offense anyway.

I have a feeling my time at Memphis is coming to a close here soon.

Likes To Run: Average
Strength: Long Passing
Weakness: Touch Passing

Ranked 907th overall nationally
Ranked 66th at his position nationally
Ranked 63rd overall in his state
Ranked 7th as his position in his state

I have a feeling this kid is better thank what Dixon has stated. He is a diamond in the rough. Big, poised in the pocket. He does try to force the ball a little. We just have to get him to focus on his schoolwork.

Passing (9 Games)
98/195, 50.2% Completion, 1191 yards, 3 TD's, 5 INT's

Rushing (9 games)
92 rushes for 492 yards and 5 TD's

Scout Report from Dixon Fletcher (Decent with DL)
Strength: Defending the Run
Weakness: Rushing the Passer

Ranked 67th at his position nationally
Ranked 3rd overall in his state
Ranked 1st at his position in his state

Big bright talented kid, that should shape our DL up immediately. He is definately better than what Dixon has stated.

In 9 games he has 64 tackles and 5 sacks

ILB Chester Malone 6'3" 213 lbs
Blackfoot High School
Blackfoot, Idaho

Scout Report from Howie Canales(Very Good with LB's)
Strength: Zone Defense
Weakness: Rushing the Passer

Ranked 86th at his position nationally
Ranked 7th overall in his state
Ranked 1st at his position in his state

A kid focused on school and football, a true student of the game. He has a nose for the ball, and is always around it.

In 9 game he has 81 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 5 INT's

OLB Wade Lynn 6'1" 209 lbs
Union County High School
Lake Butler, Florida
2.95 GPA
1183 Test Score

Scout Report from Jerry Gray (Pretty Good with LB's)
Strength: Man to Man
Weakness: Defending the Run

Ranked 95th at his position nationally
Ranked 67th overall in his state
Ranked 8th at his position in his state

This was a good late pickup for us. He started in the 5th game of the season due to an injury to the starting OLB. In that short amount of time, he was able to prove himself to a lot of people.

In 5 games he had 49 tackles and 3 sacks, if he would have played all 9 games we would have been looking at another 40 more tackles to put him at 89 tackles and another 6 more sacks for a total of 9. The main question now is endurance. Can he handle it.

As far as our rejections go.

WR Eddie Osborne 6'3" 199lbs
Campbell County Comprehensive High School

975 Test Score

Scout Report from Jerry Gray (Poor with WR's)
Strength: Catching In Traffic
Weakness: Getting Open

Ranked 57th overall in his state
Ranked 8th at his position in his state

We had discussed, and talked about this move for a while. He has the skills, his game film is there. But his coach flunked his attitude for us. Can we work with him and make him better? We thought so. We might even move him to OLB/SS if we have to.

Offense (9 games)
42 Receptions for 839 yards and 4 TD

Defense (9 games)
41 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 INT

ILB Alonzo Graham 6'1" 201 lbs

Scout Report from Tony Andrus (Pretty Good with LB's)
Strength: Zone Defense
Weakness: Rushing the Passer

Ranked 82nd at his position nationally
Ranked 17th overall in his state
Ranked 2nd at his position in his state

We have talked to Alonzo, and informed him, we love his talents, and we might ask him to play OLB, and he was completely fine with that. He played a little TE as well

Defense (9 games)
73 tackles, .5 sack, 2 INT's

Offense
11 Receptions for 275 yards

OLB Lee Palmer - Air Force
DT Rod Snead - Georgia Tech

As for me, I do not know yet, I was told I still have the schools confidence, and I have yet to get my full recruiting class going, but if I am still around, next season is a must.

End of Year

FSU wins the national championship

QB Freddie Pearson of UCLA wins the Player of the Year honors.

Summary

Obviously, we managed to get our cans kicked this season, and the injury bug nailed us pretty good.

Team Evaluation
(out of 100)

Team Performance 4 (I figured on getting a 1, thats how bad we played)
Academic Performance 57
Recruiting Performance 61 (WAY better than I thought)
T.V. Revenue 6
Alumni 1 (This is a sign, I might get kicked out)
Attendance 38

Overall 23

Well, I was a little shocked at our recruting, it amazed me.

I know this is probably my last season if I lose.
