Corinthians spent $25 million on Argentina forward Carlos Tevez, his compatriot Sebastian Dominguez and former Porto midfielder Carlos Alberto in the close season and were hoping to finally play the trio in Saturday's Paulista championship match against America.
But the debut of 20-year-old Tevez, who cost $18 million alone, looks set to be delayed after he spent two days in hospital at the weekend.
The official reason was that Tevez was bitten by an insect, most likely an ant or mosquito, and the bite became infected.
However, Brazilian media reports said the wound was the result of repeated kicking by his team mates during training.
Dominguez, who won the Argentine Apertura championship with Newell's Old Boys last season, is one of three players to go down with a mystery stomach virus in Porto Feliz, the rural retreat where Corinthians are training.
Corinthians doctors say the illness is not serious and subsides after a day
