View Full Version : Minor (or perhaps not so minor) annoyance.

As I think most people know, I live in a nice cottage on the grounds of a hospital in New Orleans. We've had several movies film here in the last year with the hospital presumably receiving some reimbursement from the production crew for the inconvenience. This has always been a very minor inconvenience to me as films are usually shot immediately in front of the hospital (and I use the back entrance/exit) or in the hospital.
However, yesterday as I was just about to go to sleep I was told I had to move my car. They were setting up last night. Today, they are shooting the movie. It's being shot in my driveway and the cottage immediately next door to mine (which is vacant.) This is annoying because I have to a) Park about a quarter of a mile away to find a parking spot for my vehicle. Not a big deal as I can use the exercise and any bit helps. b) I have to deal with a loud generator outside my cottage that is annoying me as it drones on relentlessly despite my turning the sound on the TV up. c) They have a permit to shoot until tomorrow morning, and they are planning on shooting in front of my place during the night. Last time a crew shot during the night they used big powerful lights. I'm really concerned that these lights will be shining into my window tonight as I try to sleep (least I slept almost 14 hours last night.)

Sounds like the perfect opportunity for you and the future Mrs Eaglesfan to brush up on your shadow puppets!

At least most of the bars there are open 24 hours--you can just sleep there until the crew leaves.

Am I the only one having visions of the episode of Fresh Prince where they're shooting the video in the house, so Will and his buddy crash the set and start dancing around frantically in their pajamas?
(Dead silence.)
OK, apparently I am. Never mind then.

That is a good point. I wonder how comfortable a good bar stool is.
As far as Jeeber's plan, the crew had a fit when I wanted to walk into my place after getting home from work a bit ago. I had to wait for about 10 minutes for them to finish their shot. Least a cute assistant chatted me up to keep me busy while I waited.

The last movie had a few big stars in it (whom I blanking on right now, but I know all of the ladies that work here were trying to catch a glimpse of the male lead. I'll have to ask my wife who it was when she gets home tonight from work as she was one of the ladies swooning :() which actually made things atrocious for us as security was tight around the hospital. This movie doesn't seem to have too many or any big stars as security isn't very tight. The working title is "The Unit" according to all of the signs around here.

The previous movie with the star that the ladies were swooning over wasn't "Glory Road", was it? I know that part of that movie (based on Texas Western's 1966 championship run) was shot partly in NO, but I don't know why they would be shooting scenes in front of a hospital. Oh, and the ladies apparently like the guy playing Don Haskins, Josh Lucas...

No, it was a big name star. I think maybe Clooney? But, I really don't remember. I'm sure Mrs. Eaglesfan will as she was telling ALL of her friends that she saw him.

Dola -
Part of the reason movies shoot here is that the hospital is right along the river. It has lots of creepy buildings on the ground that look old and scary. Mostly horror movies shoot here or drama movies. This is the 4th or 5th movie I've seen shot here in the 18 months. I did watch one shoot extensively as the female lead was unknown but very good looking. Despite that, it became boring to watch after a few hours. They must have shot the same scene at least 20 times.

Double Dola -
The grounds themselves kind of have a creepy feel to them at night with there being very poor lighting. Fortunately, security jeeps patrol every 15 minutes when a movie isn't being shot.

I was in Donaldsonville LA on business in early December, and they were filming a movie about Huey Long. I don't remember who was in it (Sean Penn, I believe). James Carville is a Executive Producer. Anyhow, I'm having lunch, and James Carville comes walking out of the back of the resturant. He was there eating lunch with old HS classmates.

Louisiana has become a very popular place to shoot movies in the past two or so years. Particularly during the winter months when it is still relatively warm.

Give Pumpy a call. I bet he would love to crash the set with his digital camera.
I do not think you can do anything, since the hospital owns the cottage. Do you even pay rent?
I would "accidently" walk out a few times in my underwear though. I would make sure I cost them some money somehow. I also would never let them tell me I can not walk into a place I am staying.

Pass. My files still seem to be having trouble reaching your email even using gmail. I'm really confused as I don't have problems emailing anyone else. Is there any other way you can think of that I can send my weekly file, maybe IM?
GoldenEagle - The hospital owns the grounds, and I know there is nothing I can do. This place is partially owned by Job A (see my job thread), so I really have no intentions of upsetting the owners of this place. I do pay a very cheap rent, especially considering that utilities are included and this place is fairly large (3000 Sq. feet approximately.)

Last night, they were shooting until past 3:00 AM and it kept me up :(
I had to be up for work at 6:45 AM today. As a result, I'm now tired enough to sleep despite the incessant droning of the generator. Oh yeah, because of rain, we now have two huge tents set up in our driveway for the crew :(
Worst part of it, my boss told me they paid for an extension on their time to shoot til 12 noon tomorrow, and they may end up paying for longer if needed.

I think John Travolta qualifies as a man women swoon over while men have no idea why. Maybe it's a "Grease" thing, kind of like fat Elvis.

7920 Belfast is exactly 0.53 miles from my house (hey, I'm a Geocacher; I'm supposed to be able to figure this stuff out). If I remember to stop by there on my way home from work Saturday afternoon, I'll check it out.
As for the problem with the filming at EaglesFan27's hospital, I didn't even realize they shot any movies in that area (if it's the hospital that I think it is). I've been on a location shoot before, and the generators coupled with the 5,000- and 10,000-watt bulbs could make sleep nearly impossible for anyone. Urgh. It doesn't sound like fun.
Anyway, I'm going to go outside in my underwear now, even though I'm a couple of miles from the hospital I think it is. I'll be sure to bring the camera. See you guys later!

They shot the movie Long Gone with the delicious Virginia Madsen right outside of the building I worked in. In fact, since I was the only one in the building I had camera people setting up on the balcony outside my window and they were coming in and out all night.
Never met any of the stars but it was way cool listening to the staff talk shop and they were all really polite and easy to talk to. Me and a friend were almost in the movie too. When they were shooting from the other side of the street we went out on the balcony ( we were egged on by the camera guys who basically told us to do it )and were visible on the ledge. :)
The director said they'd have let us stay but we weren't dressed in 50's attire. Dang. I don't think our waving our arms around helped our cause much either. ;)

You are right.. the generators and the huge lightbulbs are not helping my sleep pattern at all :(
I just found out they are extending the shoot until Monday evening. They didn't shoot at all during the day today, but they are firing up the generator now and presumably shooting til 2 or 3 in the morning. Oh yeah, did I mention the generator is parked directly below my bedroom window (which is on the 2nd floor.) :(

Have you considered getting a hotel room? And getting the hospital to pay for it? It seems like a reasonable request.

The hospital is willing to pay for a hotel room, but even with the annoyance, I'd rather stay here. There are so many reasons, not the least of which is my main computer, Xbox, and I'm on call for a local ER and the ER is right across the street.
